Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| August 11, 2012 |
The Super Cup Stock Car Series Classic Cars & Credit 100 was this past Saturday night, August 11 at Midvale Speedway. In addition to the traveling series, Late Models, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Mini-Trucks were in action. With cool conditions, the track was fast and racing was wild throughout the night.
Muncie, IN driver Jim Crabtree, Jr., a longtime Late Model driver with plenty of experience racing in CRA and other classes, adjusted quickly to the track on his first ever visit. The quickest driver in practice and qualifying, pulled the number "2" pill for the redraw, which put him on the outside of the first row for the feature event. When the green dropped, Crabtree immediately raced into the lead with last year's winner Kevin Kromer following from behind. Last year's top qualifier, Jody Harrison, who set second fast time earlier in the day, moved into the second spot on lap 30 of the 100 lap grind. Turning very equal laps, Harrison kept pace through the middle stages of the race. After a lap 64 caution, the field went back to green. Under a light mist, Crabtree spun his ride on the exit of turn two. Arguably, track conditions could have been the cause, however, Crabtree restarted as the last lead lap car per Super Cup Series rules. The excitement of the race then picked up as Crabtree started his trek back toward the front. While it took just a few laps to move back into second, Crabtree found it tougher to challenge Harrison. After a lap 80 restart, Crabtree made a bonsai move in turn three. Driving it deep into the corner, he made the pass of Harrison for the lead but spun the car in the process, thus relegating him back to sixth again. Over the final 18 circuits, Crabtree worked through the pack again to close on Harrison. Catching him with just a couple of laps to go, Crabtree got to the rear bumper but ran the leader clean. As the cars came to the stripe, Crabtree gave it all he had and spun as he crossed the line. Claiming the victory by a small margin was Renick, WV driver Jody Harrison. Crabtree, Kromer, Brent Nelson, and JP Crabtree were top five finishers. Others in the top ten were Tim McLaughlin, Rob Morris, Jason Roberts, Jeff Zillweger, and Kyle Kromer.
Bryant Smith and Mike Miller started on the front row for the 30-lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature. When the green waved over the 19-car field, it was Miller diving into turn one as the leader. As the field raced to the completion of the first lap, contact ensued between Miller and Smith, sending the Miller car around. With nowhere to go, a number of drivers piled in as fenders were foiled and radiators were ruptured. Six cars were retired to the pits. Back to green, Miller raced out front again as Mark Willison tried to hang onto second. With Willison's car off a little bit, Miller was building up a sizable early lead. With less than ten to go, Willison's defensive driving was thwarted by Bubba Smith and the race had a new runner-up. Smith closed on Miller but never got the run needed to try and claim his second win in-a-row. For Miller, it was his first Midvale win of the season in the Route 39 Auto Salvage/William's Paint & Body #22. Following the Clinton, Ohio driver to Ron Jaberg, Sr. dedicated win were Smith, Jonathan Reitter who had a great run in the second half of the race, Willison, and Rick Sibila who rallied from the back from an earlier mishap. The rest of the top ten were Alex Rosenberry, Rich Dessecker, Bob Schneider, Jr., Larry Baker, and Ron Kirkpatrick. Rosenberry, Emerson Huffman, and Mike Mazzagatti won the heats, while Sibila set fast time.
Nick Harmon and T.J. Barker led the Pure Stocks to the green flag for their 20-lap event. Harmon raced into the lead at the start but it would be short lived as the fast qualifiers were dicing their way quickly through the field. On the move was Canton, OH driver Teddy Oliver. Coming off of his first feature win of the season, Oliver looked determined for number two. Making a couple of daring three wide passes, Oliver found himself in second by the start of the third lap and in the lead one pace later. At that point, the race was Oliver's to lose. He did find a challenge at first from Joe Linard. Linard was strong on this night but gave up the second spot on lap 17. It was then Bill Aubihl's turn to challenge. His run also came up short as the Wissman Motorsports/Stewart Flooring #49 crossed the line in first. Aubihl, Linard, Don Boron, Jr., and Mike Martin were top five finishers. Others in the top ten were Vince Martin, T.J. Barker, Bill Shimko, Kenneth Price, and Josh Flesher. Boron and Barker won the heat races, while Martin set fast time with a new track record.
Clayton Oliver set the early pace in the 15-lap Compact feature event. Oliver, running much, much better than his previous visit earlier this season remained out front before being overtaken by one of the division frontrunners, Wes Ennis. Once out front, Ennis proved to be too tough to tame but Jeffrey Orr and Braden Swaney did their best with podium finishes. As the checkered waved, it was Ennis adding to his division leading feature win total with Orr, Swaney, Tye Kelly, and Donnie Leggett, III finishing off the top five. For Kelly, it was his first start of the season, driving the DelVecchio #15, which is his former car. The rest of the top ten were Tom Barrett, Tim Frederick, Bill Jane, Billy Weaver, and Ron Fogt, Jr. Barrett and Kelly won the heats, while Ennis set fast time.
Braden Swaney, the top qualifier in the Stock Compact division, started a methodical approach to get to the front in the 15-lap feature. Racing on the small oval can be frustrating at times trying to move forward, but Swaney played it perfectly in the former Blaine Salsberry driven machine. Using the outside and inside lanes, Swaney found himself at the front of the pack when the checkered waved. Dan Buckey had a solid run to claim second and garner important points toward the title chase. Allen Clark finished a strong third, while Chris Bloom and Howard Bartholow corralled top fives. Buckey and Tim Frederick won the heats.
Justin Badgett led the first lap in Mini-Truck feature, Midvale's newly added division. Top qualifier, Vince Martin, though was determined to claim the checkered. On lap two, Martin raced by after setting fast time in qualifying and winning the heat race. Martin pulled out to a +5 second margin to cross the stripe first at the checkered. Post race inspection, however, revealed the truck was too light, thus giving the victory to Dennis Wood in the Todd Shultz owned entry. Following Wood were Dennis Garrett, III, Badgett, Cody Collmar, and Rich Dunlap. Badgett was eventually credited with the heat win, while Badgett set the official fast time.
