Willison Takes Second Win In-A-Row
July 30, 2011
Willison Takes Second Win In-A-RowA full moon may not have been scheduled, but it seemed like that type of night this past Saturday, July 30 at Midvale Speedway. In a number of divisions, racing was rough and saw many drivers loading up wrecked racecars at the end of the night. Six divisions were on the docket, while the kids rode in racecars at intermission.

The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds put on a good show, as usual, in their 20-lap main event. Youngster, Alex Rosenberry and veteran, Kevin McClintock, brought the competitive field to the green. At the completion of the first lap, it was the 14-year old rookie leading the first lap while Mark Willison, Jr. moved into second. The second position turned out to be a very important pickup for Willison, as caution waved moments later, slating him on the outside of row one for the restart. Back to green, Willison fought hard to move forward. After a couple of laps going for the top spot, the Minerva, Ohio driver slid into the lead, while Rosenberry had to try and defend the second position. As the laps wore down in a race that saw very few caution laps, Willison extended his lead over point leader Dave Dobbins and Ryan Tedesco, who was filling in for Scott Archer. With the checkered waving, Willison claimed his second feature win in a row, while Dobbins, Tedesco, Rosenberry, and McClintock were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Adam Stewart, Lee McCreery, Doug Higgins, and Joe Ujcich. Garbrandt and Stewart won the heats, while Dobbins set fast time.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models have put on some good clean shows over the last few weeks but this past Saturday's event will not join the list. The race started without much of a problem, as polesitter, Tom Stankiewicz took the early lead and Bryant Smith followed closely in second. After the race's first caution on lap three, a double file restart again put Smith to the high lane. As the green waved, Stankiewicz spun his tires and Smith took the top spot. The race then took the look of one that may go to the finish without a caution as the field had spread out. However on lap 18, caution waved for Joe Slentz who spun in front of the leaders. That again bunched up the field and created a couple of mishaps. On one of the ensuing restarts, Stankiewicz was giving it a good try in the outside lane before sliding high exiting turn four. That put him on the highside of a three car battle. Going into turn one, Stankiewicz tried to get back down to the second groove which brought contact between himself and Emerson Huffman. Huffman's car climbed up the left rear of the #42 and tore up the sharp ride pretty badly, relegating him pitside, while Huffman was able to continue. That slated Bubba Smith on the high side of Bryant Smith for the next restart. As the duo came off of turn two door handle to door handle, though it should be noted that Late Models don't really come equipped with them, the brothers bumped tires just which turned both cars into sideways missiles. Jonathan Reitter and Huffman who were right behind, had nowhere to go. Reitter's nose piece was ripped from his ride, while Huffman's car ended up slamming into the turn three wall head on. Huffman's front clip was badly damaged, while Bryant Smith also retired to the pits. Over the last handful of laps, Bubba Smith held onto a damaged, ill-handling car trying to pick up his third victory of the year. It wasn't easy, as Ron Jaberg, Jr. got to the inside a couple of times, only to have Smith pull ahead for the victory. Following the Smith's Auto Sales/Finish Line Motors #12 were Jaberg, Rich Dessecker, Reitter, and Bob Sibila. Derek Grewell, Bob Schneider, Jr., Huffman, Smith, and Stankiewicz were top ten finishers. Stankiewicz and Grewell won the heats, while Schneider set fast time.

The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division followed the Late Models and just about matched them with another rough event. Joe Linard, the polesitter, led the early laps in the race with Justin Courtney taking second from Don Boron, Jr. on lap three. Joining the battle up front at the midpoint were Teddy Oliver, Bill Aubihl, and Phil Bunton, Jr. Aubihl took the lead on lap ten, while Oliver moved into second two laps later. Through numerous cautions, Aubihl stayed out front until pulling pitside under a lap 18 yellow. The veteran driver decided to wait at least one more week to win his fourth feature of the season, as an engine can be claimed after a fourth win. That gave the lead to Oliver, who had started at the back of the pack for creating a mishap during group qualifying. When the race mercifully ended, Oliver claimed his fifth feature win of the season in his PhilChalmers.com/Oliver's Garage #49. Courtney, Linard, Brian Minard, and Don Boron, Jr. followed him across the line. Linard's run was disallowed after his rearend was found to be non-locked. Other top ten finishers were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bob Passwaters, Sr., Vince Martin, Corey Evey, TJ Barker, and Aubihl. Tom Earley and Brian Minard won the heats, while Passwaters, Jr. set fast time.

Adam Mishler led the early laps in the Outlaw Compact feature with Roger Linard and Max McCartney making some big gains early. Linard took over momentarily but caution negated his pass. When the field went back to green, McCartney took the top spot from Mishler while point leader Kyle Grove followed. Yellow waved for the final time on lap nine. That slated the top two qualifiers for a side-by-side restart. After a couple of laps of green, Grove gave up trying to pass McCartney on the highside. Using a slick move coming out of two, Grove ducked to the lowside and shot into the top spot with five laps to go. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver went on to claim his seventh feature win of the year while McCartney, John McNutt, Mishler, and Jesse Page finished in the top five. The rest of the top ten were Linard, Jake Albright, Dan Herron, Tye Kelly, and Rusty Rouse. McNutt and Linard won the heats.

Dan Buckey started up front in the Stock Compact feature and set the pace in the early stages. Behind him, two division front runners Tim Frederick and Braden Swaney were making noise and applying pressure. Both drivers got to Buckey but were unable to make him fold under the pressure. For Buckey, he went on to claim his third feature win of the season in the Buckey Mowing/Eastern Ohio Sports Complex #50. The Sherrodsville, Ohio driver was chased across the line by Swaney, Frederick, Colton Cottis, and Brad McClain. Paul Stull, Ryan Shreffler, Allen Clark, Howard Bartholow, and Kohlten Bryan picked up top tens. Frederick and Clark won the heats as Swaney set fast time.

Lennie Orr started up front in the Figure 8 feature event and led the whole way. There were a few close calls in the intersection with the race's last place car Corey Evey, but disaster was avoided. Orr was followed by Bubba Smith, Don Boron, and Evey at the checkered.
