Over 80 cars were on hand this past Saturday night for the third Fan Appreciation Night this season. The Late Models and Modifieds had the night off as the Detroit Irons, Pure Stocks, and Compacts raced in front of fans that attended for only $6.
In the Tusco Net Detroit Iron division, a strong field of 17 cars took the green in the 25-lap feature event. Polesitter, Dan Gasser, jumped into the lead in his black #29, but last week’s feature winner, Bill Hilliker, was hot on his trail. Hilliker moved into the lead after a couple of laps, and started to stretch it over the rest of the field. With 16 laps in, the first caution of the event came out, and that put, track champion, Joe Linard on the tail of Hilliker. When the green flew, Linard was able to take the top spot, and his dad, Roger, took second. Doug McMillen followed them by for the third position. With just a couple of laps to go, the second yellow came out, as Roger was trying the highside of Joe for the number one position. During the final, two lap, green flag run, the younger Linard was able to hang on for his fifth feature win of the season. Following the Dover, Ohio driver in his Uncle Primo’s/New Image Homes #82 were Roger Linard, Doug McMillen, Bill Hilliker, and Tim Gowins. However, Roger Linard’s #2 car was found to not meet engine specifications and his second position was taken away. That moved Don Rufener, Jr. to fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Roger Butler, Tim Skinner, Dan Gasser, Will Walker, and Sonny Arkenburgh. Joe Linard won the dash, while Hilliker and Arkenburgh were credited with heat wins. Kevin McClintock was the top qualifier.
In the Papa John’s Pure Stock division, a bonus 15-lap feature event was held as the first race of the evening. In it, Dover, Ohio driver Barney Gerber was able to take the lead and run away with the feature win. Running out of time at the finish was Teddy Oliver, the night’s top qualifier. Following the Depression Gold Company/Swiss Auto Mart #2T were Oliver, D.J. Radanovich, Al Street, and Chester McMasters. Brian Oliver, Rick Elkins, Jr., John Leasure, Brian Wood, and Leo Smith followed.
In the evening’s regular 15-lap main event for the Pure Stocks, Canton, Ohio driver Teddy Oliver again put on a passing show, as he came from his fourteenth starting position to take the lead and his fourth feature win of the year. Rounding out the top five behind the Midas Auto Service #49 were John Leasure, Rick Elkins, Jr., Joe Oliver, and Barney Gerber. Tom Wilson, D.J. Radanovich, Brian Oliver, Chester McMasters, and Scott McRobie completed the top ten. Rich Schweitzer won the dash, Gerber and Bill Weaver won heats, and Teddy Oliver was the top qualifer.
The Galigher Motorsports Racing Collectibles Compacts held four features on the evening. The first one was a bonus feature that Shawn Smarsh took the lead from Rocky Moore, and was leading until a couple of laps to go when he and Bubba Smith rubbed paint and Smith took over the lead. Smith went on to win his sixth feature of the year and was followed by Smarsh, Rocky Moore, Bobby Courtney, and Tammy Rufener completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Justin Courtney, Jim Poole, Randy Hahn, Jimbo Roup, and Randy Smart rounded out the top ten.
In the evening’s fast feature, Randy Hahn continued his winning ways by picking up the trophy for withstanding pressure from Josh Grove, Greg Grove, Kelly McNutt, and Randy Smart. Bubba Smith, Justin Courtney, John McNutt, Jack Grove, and Phil Veno completed the top ten. For Hahn it was his second Compact win in three weeks, plus a Figure 8 feature win last week.
In the second feature, Canton, Ohio driver Shawn Smarsh picked up the feature victory. Following him at the stripe were Jason Grewell, Bobby Courtney, Terry Colletti, and Phil Wade. Dale Beatty, Adam Ridgway, Rocky Moore, John Baker, and Bill Mercier rounded out the top ten.
Bruce Gibson won the third Compact feature. Angie Wheeler, Kenny Jewell, Mike Messina, and Justin Lawson followed Gibson across the stripe. Shawn Royer, Jaimie Huebner, Sean Scott, Gary Gibson, and Ben Gibson rounded out the top ten. Kelly McNutt won the dash, Jack Grove, Bobby Courtney, Dougie Cross, Shawn Musick, and Bruce Gibson won heats, and Cody Kahler was the top qualifier.
