Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 9, 2002 |
Over 100 cars were in the pits for the racing action this past weekend at Midvale Speedway. 23 cars for the Main Event Racing Series Super Late Models + four of Midvale’s regular divisions were on hand to battle it out.
In Main Event Racing Series qualifying, Tim Felver set quick time with a 13.852. Phil Pete (13.922), Gary Whipkey (13.935), Mack Gribble, Jr. (14.013), and Tim Ice (14.015) completed the top five in the time trial session.
Before the race, the #6 pill was drawn placing Michael Simko, the sixth fast qualifier, on the pole with Ice alongside. When the green dropped, Simko took the slight advantage through turn one. As he exited turn two, the Michigan driver slid high and Gribble saw an opening to the inside. In turn three, Simko and Gribble made contact causing a pile-up that saw Simko, Bob Gainer, Cord Ehrhart, A.P. Ren, Marcus Malcuit, Mike Luberda, Sr., Chuck Silva, Rich Rohrer, and Todd Ripley all stopped in the corner. Others were involved, but did not spin or come to a halt. All were able to continue, but Gribble and Simko lost their great starting positions when they went pitside.
On the second try to get the race started, Joel McKnight and Scott McLaughlin brought out a yellow for a turn four accident. McLaughlin, at one point, was on two wheels, with the other two on McKnight’s door.
The third time was not a charm, as this restart was nullified by Don Harvey, Jr. and Ryan Tedesco. As they entered turn three, Harvey’s mount got loose, slid up the speedway, and clipped the side of Tedesco. Gainer and Ripley were collected, while Tedesco was done for the night.
Finally, on the fourth restart, some laps were completed. Ice jumped into the lead, as Whipkey fell to second from their front row starting spot. Pete took third, while Felver ran fourth.
From this point on, the race was, for the most part, uneventful. Only a couple of changes took place during the race’s midstage. One of the only drivers making any moves was Harvey, who bettered his position by getting around Ren for sixth, just past lap 60. Shortly thereafter, Ren and Silva rubbed paint, causing Ren to spin. Harvey, then closed in on Pete, trying to get into the top five, but several attempts failed.
Back in the field, Mike Luberda, Jr. and Cord Ehrhart were putting on a fun-to-watch battle for eleventh. Luberda tried the lowside for many laps before electing to go to the highside and make the pass.
Over the second half of the race, the top four cars ran nose-to-tail, in a waiting for mistake type mode. As the laps wound down, no one would jump out of line, and at the finish it was Seville, Ohio’s Tim Ice, driving the Fast Racing Engines/Howe Racing Enterprises #65, making it two-for-two in the Midvale Main Event races this season. Whipkey, Felver, John Crumrine, and Pete completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Harvey, Ren, Silva, Dino Long, and Simko.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lap feature event, Mark Enos won his first of the season by holding off the race’s hard-charger, Dusty Woodie. Enos, driving the Generall Construction/D&B Machine #0, showed that now that he has new motor power under the hood, he is another driver on the list that can win on any given week. Woodie, Baldy Baker, Jr., Mark Striker, and John Wilson rounded out the top five. Completing the top ten were Butch Erickson, Jeff Walker, Mark Willison, Glen Jewell, and Jeff Smith. Mark Willison was the top qualifier
Dennison, Ohio driver Waylon Orr held off a big challenge from Joe Linard to pick up his first career feature win in the Tusco Net Detroit Iron division. Orr, driving the SGS Graphics/Hopewell Oil & Gas #28 was followed by Linard, Tim Gowins, Doug McMillen, and Roger Linard. Don Rufener, Jr., Kevin McClintock, Rich Stalnaker, Travis Devore, and Dan Gasser finished off the top ten. Roger Linard turned the top time.
In the Papa John’s Pure Stock 15-lapper, three cars in the Oliver Racing stable were running up front for the lead, until Rick Elkins, Jr. joined the fight. At the stripe, Canton’s Teddy Oliver, in the Midas Auto Service #49, crossed in first, with Elkins, Joe Oliver, Adam Stewart, driving Brian Oliver’s #48, and Paul Parson following. However, Elkins’ #53 was found to not meet specifications, so that moved Brian Wood into the top five. Al Street, Jim Shaw, D.J. Radanovich, John Ferrell, and Chester McMasters rounded out the top ten. Radanovich turned quick time.
In the Compact fast feature, Dover’s Bubba Smith picked up the trophy with Rich Fox, Willie Grove, Randy Smart, and David Breehl in the top five. Gabe Pringle, Justin Courtney, Terry Colletti, Cody Kahler, and Phil Veno rounded out the top ten.
In the second Compact feature, Dougie Cross picked up his first career win, while Shawn Smarsh, Rocky Moore, Joe Ujcich, and Bill Mercier rounded out the top five. Completing positions six through ten were Jason Anthony, Jason Grewell, John Drescher, William Scott, and Bob Passwaters. Cody Kahler turned the fastest time.
Racing action will continue this coming Saturday, August 17, as the drivers battle in the first of three weeks remaining for the point’s championship. The points’ battles are heating up, as Greg and Josh Grove are going for the Compact crown, Kevin McClintock and Joe Linard are locked up in a Detroit Iron battle, Ryan Tedesco is trying to hold off Mike Miller for the Late Model points, Mark Striker and Glen Jewell are neck-and-neck for the Modified trophy, and Barney Gerber is trying to run down Jimmy Orr in the Pure Stocks. The Legend Car series will also be on hand this weekend. Racing will start at 6:30.
