Despite an iffy forecast, dodging raindrops, and threatening skies, over 130 cars were on hand and put on a great show this past Saturday, July 27 at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Modifieds, Detroit Irons, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were all competing, as well as rides for kids at intermission.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified 20-lapper, Butch Erickson and Jeff Christy made up the front row. When the green fell, both drivers were able to put a little distance between themselves and the rest of the field. However, Erickson eventually went under his time, sending him to the back and Christy slipped back through the field after a yellow, so that made Baldy Baker, Jr. the man to beat in the Dan Shannon owned #6. Lawney Vaughn moved into second, behind Baker, and was all over him until the finish. Lap-after-lap it was easy to see that Vaughn had plenty of motor, but just not enough handling to get the job done. At the finish, the MAC Trailer Manufacturing/White Performance #6 was followed by Vaughn, Mark Enos, Jeff Walker, and Mark Striker. John Wilson, Erickson, Christy, Jeff Smith, and Glen Jewell completed the top ten. Wilson and Erickson won the heats, while Striker was the top qualifier.
In the Smokers Paradise Late Model 25-lapper, one of the worst incidents for the division in several years took place. As the cars took the green, polesitter Tom Garbrandt slid up the speedway, outside front row starter A.P. Ren checked up and the field turned into an accordion on the frontstretch. Mike Miller, Ryan Tedesco, Kenny Stevens, Bear Schwartz, Ren, Rich Dessecker, and Darrel Dexter were all tangled up going into turn one. Getting the worst of the accident were Dexter, Dessecker, and Ren. They were unable to continue. Amazingly, Miller who about got turned on his roof on the frontstretch, had just minor damage and was able to continue. Miller took the lead early on in the race and held off the point’s leader, Tedesco to win his fourth feature of the year. Following the A-1 Auto Parts/Cornwell Tools #79 were Tedesco, Garbrandt, Duane Dunn, and John Sandquist, Jr. Dave Sluka, Tom Newman, Jr., Mike Enos, Stevens, and Richard Marcum completed the top ten. Miller and Enos won the heats, while Dessecker turned the top time.
Next on the track were the Tusco Net Detroit Irons for their 20-lapper. Doug McMillen, who has had several top five finishes finally was able to win one as he brought his Speedy Auto Parts/Packer’s Garage #54 from the 11th starting position to take the lead. Joe Linard followed him through the field to take second, but did not have enough to make a serious challenge. Roger Linard, Kevin McClintock, and Don Rufener, Jr. rounded out the top five. Completing the top ten were Tim Gowins, Sonny Arkenburgh, Randy Doolin, Bill Aubihl, and Lee McCreery. Rufener and McCreery won the heats, while Keith Thomas set fast time.
Two features were held in the Papa John’s Pure Stock division. In the fast feature, drivers put on the best race of the night. On the final circuit, anyone in the top five had a chance of winning, as the cars made contact and the lead changed hands several times. At the finish, it was the Cook’s Towing/McLean’s Outdoor Maintenance #88 of Jim Shaw picking up the win. Following him were Joe Oliver, John Leasure, Teddy Oliver, and Rick Elkins, Jr. D.J. Radanovich, Ron Myers, Shane Billiter, Rich Schweitzer, and Bryan Aubihl finished off the top ten.
In the second feature, Fresno, Ohio driver Rick Hoffman picked up his first win. Mark Deeser came home second with Chester McMasters third, Blake Mackey fourth, and John Ferrell in fifth. Chris Miller, Tom Craw, Tom Feller, Jr., Douglas Higgins, and Chuckie Oliver completed the top ten. Shaw, Joe Oliver, and Bob Oliver won the heats, while Elkins, turned the top time.
In Compact action, Billy Stutler dominated the fast feature and won by a straightaway. Behind the Kopp Shop #84 were Ray Van Lehn, Greg Grove, Brian Oliver, and Josh Grove. Russell Grandison, Randy Hahn, Kelly McNutt, Terry Colletti, and Justin Courtney rounded out the top ten.
In the second feature, Gabe Pringle came home victorious in his Dave’s Towing #08. Dale Beatty, Bryce Scott, Tammy Rufener, and David Breehl completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Otto Polilli, Steve Randall, Bill Mercier, Eric Feister, and Rocky Moore.
The final Compact feature was won by Jamie Leslie. Jerry Kimble, John Wissman, Ray Scott, and John Drescher completed the top five.
All five divisions of racing action will be on hand this coming Saturday, August 3. Also competing will be the Dale’s Heating & Cooling Figure 8’s. Racing starts at 6:30.
