Despite the fact that the Late Model and Modified divisions had the night off, 140 cars were in the pits to race on Saturday, July 6 for a special Fan Appreciation Night. Detroit Irons, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Legends, and Figure 8’s were on hand.
In the Tusco Net Detroit Iron division, a 50-lapper was held. The race, which also paid extra purse, had only 15 cars start as attrition has been a major factor in the division this year. Dan Gasser led in the early stages of the race, but the division front-runners were quickly moving up. Dover, Ohio driver, Joe Linard, who came into the night with three feature wins, was the first to challenge for the top spot. After about a lap, he was in front and pulling away. However, top qualifier, Kevin McClintock was also coming on strong. In fact, McClintock, during the course of the race, caught the leader and ran right on his rear bumper until the completion. Lap-after-lap, McClintock came off of turn four a little lower than Linard, but could not get the run he needed by the end. Linard, driving he Uncle Primo’s/Russ Moore & Sons Concrete #82 picked up his fourth feature win, while McClintock, Doug McMillen, Bill Aubihl, and Lee McCreery rounded out the top five. Gasser, Mike Royer, Rich Stalnaker, Waylon Orr, and Tim Skinner completed the top ten. Skinner and Tim Gowins won the heats.
In the 40-lap Papa John’s Pure Stock main event, Teddy Oliver quickly jumped into the lead for the 23-car field. Point’s leader, Greg Mazzoleni, took over second in the early going and the duo’s battle made for some great racing through the middle stages. Slowly, but surely, John Leasure was working his way to the front. Leasure, who has had a second and a first respectively in his last two features, caught the top two and started working for two in a row. Racing was exciting as each time Leasure or Mazzoleni would get a run on Oliver, the second and third place cars seemed to change positions. Each tried several times on Oliver, who gave them plenty of room on the outside, but to no avail, as the Midas Auto Service/Mac Tools #49 went on to pick up the victory. Leasure wound up second with Mazzoleni, Brian Oliver, and Mike Martin completing the top five. D.J. Radanovich, Jason Nealey, Paul Parson, John Ferrell, and Shane Ball finished in position six through ten. Radanovich, Chester McMasters, and Chris Miller won the heats, while Rick Elkins, Jr. was the top qualifier.
Racing was good as usual in the Galigher Motorsports Racing Collectible Compact division, as the 30-lapper was full of green flag racing. Greg Grove, the point’s leader, was out front early on, but pulled to the infield with problems, ending his night. John McNutt, the 2000 track champion, was once again strong as he drove his #35 through traffic to take the lead. While McNutt was pulling away, Josh Grove took second and closed in quickly for the highest position. At the finish, McNutt took home the big victory in his Clum Tire/Route 39 Auto Salvage car. Grove, Bubba Smith, Randy Hahn, and Bryce Scott claimed top five positions. Rounding out the top ten were Randy Smart, Jim Poole, Kelly McNutt, Russell Grandison, and Jason Morgan.
In the second Compact feature, Brian Oliver got the win with Shawn Smarsh, Joe Ujcich, Ray Scott, and Steve Oxier in the top five. The third feature was won by Bruce Gibson. Trailing him at the line were John Drescher, Bobby Courtney, Otto Polilli, and John Wissman. Heat races were won by Jim Poole, Brian Oliver, Mike Swaney, Otto Polilli, and Brett Dinger. The top qualifier was Cody Kahler.
In the traveling Legends’ circuit, Cadiz, Ohio’s Bob Swann led the first several laps before spinning in turn three. Larry Young then took the lead from Tom Hall with Fred Davis in tow. Davis could not get by, so his son and top qualifier Tim Davis took second and eventually, the lead. Davis went on to win and was followed to the stripe by Larry Young, Rick Riffle, Fred Davis, and Dennis Knox. Randy Burns, Tom Hall, Derek Crasi, Tim Williams, and Tom Spisak finished off the top ten. The heat races were won by Fred Davis, Tim Williams, and Charlie Williams.
The Dale’s Heating & Cooling Figure 8 feature was almost cancelled because only six cars signed up. However, the sizable crowd that stuck around wanted to see them run, and the decision to go on with the race was a great one. Randy Hahn, who led for much of the race, with Brian Oliver in tow, had close calls at the intersection at least five of the ten laps. Randy Hahn, of Barnhill, Ohio, won in what turned out to be the best Figure 8 race of the year. Oliver, John Wissman, Jimbo Roup, Rob Bower, and Otto Polilli completed the rest of the field.
Dan Shannon, a Modified regular, drove to the feature win in the side-winder sprint race that was held. Ernie Shook’s young daughter drove to the heat race win.
This Saturday, July 13, all five regular classes will be back in action. At intermission, all of the cars and drivers will come out on the track for a special autograph and camera session. Qualifying will run from 3:50-5:50 while racing will start at 6:30.
