The second half of a two-day racing weekend at Midvale Speedway was held with a 100-lap Late Model feature headlining the show. 145 cars were in the pits, as five divisions raced on Sunday afternoon.
In qualifying, Don Harvey, the track record holder in the Late Model division, was clocked with the fast time at a 14.73. Marcus Malcuit 14.79, Paul Miller, Jr. 14.80, Steve Gilland 14.80, and Mike Miller 14.80 completed the top five.
Rich Dessecker and Tom Newman, Jr. started on the front row of the 20-car field. Dessecker took the lead immediately, as the green waved, with Newman dropping into second. Brian Volk followed in third, but moved into the runner-up spot, when Newman had to pit to fix a leak.
Throughout the event, several cars made strong runs through the field. Don Harvey, who started in 10th as the fastest qualifier, gave the car all he could to pick up several spots to challenge in the top five. Newman was another driver that kept battling, as after he lost his great track position while pitting, he moved back through to record a top five finish. Steve Gilland admitted his fault for a caution flag and went to the tail. He worked hard using the second groove to get back into the top several cars, before overheating problems ended his night.
Up front, however, Volk looked several times to the inside of Dessecker, who was having some handling problems, but could never get a run to stick. Bob Sibila, during a solid run, was passed by Harvey on a restart and dropped to fourth, and Newman moved into the top five with a few laps to go.
Dessecker went on to pick up his first win in a few years driving the Farmer Smith owned #7. The car is sponsored by Budweiser and the Dover-Phila Federal Credit Union. Volk, Harvey, Sibila, and Newman rounded out the top five. Finishing in positions six through ten were A.P. Ren, Mike Miller, Kenny Stevens, Bob Eichel, and Ryan Tedesco.
Eighteen Tolloti Pipe Modifieds took the green in their 25-lap event. Elyria’s Rick Page took the lead from his pole starting position, and held on for many laps as Ernie Shook worked to get around. Unable to do so, Glen Jewell passed him, and started to challenge for the lead himself. Jewell, who is able to run a very low line, ducked low in the first and second corners to make the pass of Page with a little over ten to go. Once around Page, Jewell, driving the Texas Roadhouse/J.D. Byrider #24, stretched his lead as Shook took second, Jeff Walker finished third, Page wound up fourth, and Jeff Smith finished fifth. Mark Striker, Mark Willison, Dusty Woodie, Jim McCune, and Lawney Vaughn rounded out the top ten. McCune and Vaughn won the heats, while Doug Meyer was top qualifier.
Roger Linard and Travis Page started on the front row of the 20-lap Tusco Net Detroit Iron feature event. Linard looked strong in leading the race for several laps, but was caught going under his qualifying time. The yellow came out, he joined the tail, and started the tough chore of working his way back. Page took over at that point and held on until Tim Skinner made the pass in turn three for the lead. Skinner never looked back in the Red Line Racing Engines #23. Following him across the line were Doug McMillen, Kevin McClintock, Page, and Waylon Orr. Linard, Bill Aubihl, Sonny Arkenburgh, Joe Linard, and Keith Thomas completed the top ten. Skinner, Roger Linard, and Don Rufener, Jr. won the heats, while McClintock was the top qualifier.
Canton driver, Teddy Oliver, took a liking to the outside lane to move from his 10th place starting position, to his first win of 2002. Oliver, in the Midas Auto Service/Mac Tools #49, was followed across the stripe by Anthony Bissett, Curtis Collins, John Leasure, and Barney Gerber. Shane Billiter, Brian Wood, Greg Mazzoleni, Chester McMasters, and Al Street completed the top ten. Billiter, Collins, and Kevin Locker won the heats, while Mazzoleni again turned the top time.
In the Galigher Motorsports Racing Collectibles Compact class, Billy Stutler set fast time by turning a new track record and continued his success by winning the feature event as well. Following the #84 were Greg Grove, Jimmy Beatty, Randy Hahn, and Terry Colletti.
In the second Compact feature, Josh Feister picked up his first career win. Following the Blevin’s Tire/Smith’s Auto Sales #78 were Jim Poole, Josh Grove, Russell Grandison, and Jason Morgan.
Jason Shaw filled in for Gary Murray in the third feature and came from the back of the field to pick up the win. Also coming across the line in the top five were Jason Anthony, Jack Grove, Bryce Scott, and Bruce Gibson.
In the fourth and final Compact feature race, Vic Paul took the victory while Bill Mercier, Ben Gibson, John Wissman, and Dale Nealey finished off the top five. Winning heats were Cody Kahler, Shawn Smarsh, Jack Grove, Bobby Courtney, and Vic Paul, while Billy Stutler claimed the fast time.
