Mother Nature finally gave in and allowed for week #2, sponsored by Papa John’s Pizza and Canton Auto Salvage, of the 2002 season. 163 cars lined the pit area for the night that featured all 5 divisions plus the Figure 8’s.
Feature action started with the 25-lap Smokers Paradise Late Models. Paul Sibila started on the pole with Tom Garbrandt to his outside. After a couple of failed restarts, Sibila led lap one. However, by lap 3, Garbrandt ducked to the lowside and took over the top spot with Steve Gilland in tow. Don Harvey, the top qualifier on opening night, caught them by lap 7, as it became a three car breakaway. With 21 laps in, a yellow flew for Paul Miller, Jr., who spun on the backstretch. It set up a four lap shootout with Garbrandt, Gilland, Harvey, Marcus Malcuit, and Rich Dessecker comprising the top five. With two laps to go, Gilland decided it was time to make his move and put his car on the inside of Garbrandt to take the top spot and go on to win his first Late Model feature of the year. Gilland, who finished second on opening night, is sponsored by Tusco Net and Chuck Nicholson Pontiac GMC. Garbrandt, Harvey, Malcuit, and Dessecker completed the top five. Tom Newman, Jr., Sibila, Ryan Tedesco, A.P. Ren, and Paul Miller, Jr. Garbrandt and Kenny Stevens won the heats, while Malcuit was the top qualifier.
Next on the track were the Tolloti Pipe Modifieds for their 20-lap affair. Butch Erickson led the field down, as the polesitter, and stayed out front for the first 5 laps. That is when Mark Willison, a new Modified driver at Midvale, ducked to the inside to take the lead. Dusty Woodie quickly took second and stuck his front bumper right to the rear of Willison. Woodie tried several times to make a move on Willison, but could not, and that is when Ernie Shook moved into second. Entering turn one on the final circuit, Shook gave a strong challenge in the outside lane. Willison, trying to stay in front, dove into one a little harder, hit the rumble bumps on the inside of the track, and slid up the racing surface. Doing so, he clipped the Shook ride, sent it spinning and also collected top five competitor, Mark Striker. As they raced back to the line, Dusty Woodie crossed the stripe for his first win of the year, while week #1 winner Glen Jewell came home second. Willison after a very strong run, crossed in third but was penalized for the accident, dropping him to tenth. Jeff Smith finished third, while Mark Enos and Bill Westlake completed the top five. Mike Bowers, John Wilson, Butch Erickson, Mark Striker, and Mark Willison completed the top ten. Jewell and Erickson won the heats, while Shook was the fastest qualifier.
In another exciting feature, Roger Butler and Waylon Orr made up the front row of the 20-lap Tusco Net Detroit Iron feature. Orr jumped into the lead, after a couple lap battle with Butler. Orr would go on to lead four more laps, before week #1 winner Joe Linard made his move on the outside. Two laps later, Linard was out front, but his father Roger was coming right through behind him. Joe, however, driving the Uncle Primo’s/New Image Homes #82 was able to hang on and make it 2-for-2 this season. Roger Linard, Kevin McClintock, Orr, and Tim Gowins completed the top five. Finishing in positions six through ten were Lee McCreery, Travis Page, Travis Devore, Paul Murray, and Keith Thomas. Tim Skinner, Devore, and Page won the heats, while McClintock set the quick time with a new track record.
In Papa John’s Pure Stock action, 30 cars were on hand, so 2 features were run. In the fast feature, Joe Oliver held off a very quick charge from relative Teddy Oliver, to win his first feature this year. Jim Paris, Barney Gerber, and Larry Smith completed the top five. Jim Shaw, Brian Wood, Mike Martin, Norm Stutler, and John Leasure completed the top ten. John Ferrell crossed the line in second, but lost the strong finish after officials found too much camber in the right front.
In the second Pure Stock feature, Shane Billiter strong outside lane passes to go on to a victory. Blaine Partee, Paul Parson, Rick Hoffman, and Chester McMasters rounded out the top five. Finishing sixth through tenth were Lou Francis, Tom Feller, Jr., Dan Moore, G.J. Conway, and Adam Mackey. Mike Daugherty crossed the line in fourth, but too much camber was found, so he was dq’ed. Barney Gerber, Shane Billiter, and Shane Ball won the heats, while Paris turned the fast time.
In the Galigher Motorsports Racing Collectibles Compact division, Bubba Smith crossed the line first, but too much camber was found in the right front wheel, giving the win to Dover’s Josh Grove. Grove was followed across the stripe by Billy Stutler, Gabe Pringle, Greg Grove, and Terry Colletti. Rick Elkins, Jr., John McNutt, Jim Keller, Jr., Cody Kahler, and Kelly McNutt completed the top ten.
In the second feature, Bill Coburn crossed the line in first, but the win was taken away, as adjustable sway bar links were found. Dan Rummes officially picked up the win, while Jason Morgan, Jimbo Roup, Vic Paul, and Joe Ujcich finished off the top five. Russell Grandison, Mike Swaney, John Nealey, Bobby Courtney, and Jason Anthony finished in the top ten.
In the third feature, Bruce Gibson was the winner, while Dougie Cross, Bill Mercier, Bob Passwaters, and Chris Perkins completed the top five.
The fourth feature was won by Anthony Coburn. Coburn was followed by Charles Ritch, Dale Beatty, Eric Feister, and Jerry Kimble.
