A large crowd was on hand to see all five regular divisions, comprised of 130 cars, and get autographs from their favorite drivers in a special intermission, this past Saturday, July 14, at Midvale Speedway.
The most exciting feature of the night was the Tusco Net Detroit Iron feature event. In the 20-lapper, Waylon Orr and Will Walker made up row #1. Through the first ten laps, the top ten cars ran double file, as neither Orr nor Walker could put a strangle hold on the top spot. However, on lap 10, second place changed hands, when Bill Aubihl moved underneath Walker. Aubihl, who led the point standings for a few weeks, then moved to the outside lane to try and get around Orr. One lap later, Aubihl’s good run would come to an end, as he pulled to the pits with mechanical problems. Coming in on lap 12, it was a son-father combo going for the lead – Waylon Orr (son) on the inside and Jimmy Orr (father) on the outside. The father had the advantage in this battle as he took over the lead spot. Top Qualifier, Joe Linard, moved into second with five to go and ran down the leader a short time later. As the duo came down with two to go, Linard took the lead from Orr as they passed a lapped car. For Linard, this was his fourth win of the year in the Uncle Primo’s/Russ Moore and Sons Concrete #82. Following the point’s leader across the stripe at the end of the caution free race were J. Orr, Doug McMillen, W. Orr, and Will Walker. Kevin McClintock, Roger Butler, Don Rufener, Jr., Todd Miller, and Gabe Pringle rounded out the top ten in the 24-car field. Aubihl, Ron Lute, and Paul Murray won the heats, while Bill Bitticker, who was celebrating his 72nd birthday won the last chance race.
17 cars were on hand to run the 25-lap Smokers Paradise Late Model feature. Tom Garbrandt, once again filling in for Darrel Dexter, led lap one, via his outside row starting spot. However, polesitter, Tim Sibila came back to lead lap two in a side-by-side battle. Meanwhile, point’s leader, Mike Miller, was on the move, as he took third on lap three, and three laps later, bolted into the lead, by passing Sibila. With ten laps in, the first caution flew, as the night’s second fastest qualifier, A.P. Ren broke going into turn three. Ren was filling in for Bear Schwartz in the #77 car. Two laps after they went back to green flag racing, second place runner, Sibila, spun on his own, aborting another strong run. With less than ten to go, the car on the move was that of, top qualifier, Marcus Malcuit as he was strong in the outside lane. As he was working around the #12 of Don Harvey, Jr., the two touched, causing Malcuit to scrape the wall on the backstretch. By this time, Miller was out to a sizable lead and on his way to win #5 on the season. Farmer Smith eventually worked his way to second to follow the Allied Auto/A-1 Auto & Spring car across the line with a runner-up finish. Harvey, Bob Sibila, and Malcuit completed the top five. Finishing in positions six through ten were Garbrandt, Kenny Carroll, Gary Hoopingarner, Tom Newman, Jr., and Duane Dunn. The heat races were won by Garbrandt and Kenny Stevens.
In the Tolloti Pipe Modified division, Butch Erickson passed polesitter, Mike Buchanan, for the early lead. Shortly after, Buchanan lost second and third to John Wilson and Glen Jewell. On lap 2, point’s leader, Dusty Woodie slid into the infield, but did not bring out a caution, and got back up to speed. On lap 5, Jewell got around Wilson for second and 1/2 lap later took first from Erickson as the leader slipped up in turn two. With five laps to go in the 20-lapper, Jewell was on his way to a, division leading, sixth win, but racing back in the pack was getting exciting as Woodie was working his way back up front, as he took third from Wilson. Coming down for the checkered flag, Woodie dove underneath the second place car of Erickson, the two touched, and Woodie spun to the infield, giving second to Erickson. Following the Texas Roadhouse/Hydraulic Parts Store car of Jewell and the second place car of Erickson across the stripe were Wilson, Jeff Smith, and Mark Enos. Ronnie Souders, Dusty Woodie, Jim McCune, Mike Bowers, and Mike Buchanan rounded out the top ten in another race that went flag-to-flag. Jewell also won the heat.
Brian Wood and Joe Oliver brought the 22 Papa John’s Pure Stocks down for the green, with Wood eventually leading lap one. Wood, looking for his first win, held on until Jimmy Orr took over after a lap 4 restart. Orr, driving the Bryan Aubihl prepared machine, had just finished second in the Detroit Iron feature, and was now looking for a win in the Pure Stock class. Earlier in the night, Orr set fast time and also broke the track record by nearly three-tenths. As the field crossed the line, Orr had the win, but in post race inspection, a non-stock engine component was found, disqualifying him and giving the win to Brian Wood. Following the Wood Electric/J.D. Byrider #54 in the official rundown were Barney Gerber, Anthony Bissett, Mike Martin, and Joe Oliver. Completing the top ten were Paul Parson, Chester McMasters, Curtis Collins, Jim Shaw, and Jeff Smith. Gerber, McMasters, and Joe Coram won the heat races.NOTE: The pistons, on the car that Jimmy Orr drove, orginally thought to be illegal, after further studies, were found to be legal. Thus, the track record stands and so does his win.
Josh Grove jumped into the early lead in the Canton Auto Salvage Compact feature, and never looked back, as he picked up the win in the J.D. Byrider/Dave’s Auto Body #4. Jim Jaberg came home in second, while Lennie Orr, Chuck Elkins, and John McNutt rounded out the top five. Finishing sixth through tenth were Terry Colletti, Jason Shaw, Rick Elkins, Jr., Greg Mazzoleni, and Rocky DeLuca.
In the second Compact feature, Billy Stutler went home the winner in his T&J Trucking/The Diner sponsored #84. Cody Kahler, Jim Keller, Jr., Brian Oliver, and Jerry Kimble rounded out the top five.
Gary Burdette won his first feature in the final Compact main event. Following the Route 39 Auto Salvage #04 were Tom Craw, Dale Beatty, Bruce Gibson, and Gary Murray.
This coming Saturday, July 21, the Midwest Super Modified Association will make their only visit of the year. The winged supers turn times in the 12-second bracket around the 3/10-mile oval. Last year’s winner was Doug Saunier of Navarre, Ohio. Also racing on this night will be the Late Models, Modifieds, Detroit Irons, Pure Stocks, and Compacts. Qualifying will begin at 4, while racing will start at 6:30.
