Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| September 7, 2019 |
It was Season Championship Night for the Snap-on Tools by Doug Poole Mini Truck's along with our other 4 Divisions with a Skid Plate Race to finish off the night, all presented by Canton Auto Salvage and Finlayson Towing. Seventy Cars and Trucks and 20 Skid Plate Racers made the tow to the 3/10 mile oval under sunny skies and 75 degrees at race time.
The 12 lap Snap-on Tools by Doug Poole Mini Truck Feature was the last to hit the Speedway, but the only one with a Champion being crowned. Barney Gerber in the #2 and points leader Eddie McLean in the #443 led the field down for the start. McLean had an 18 point lead coming into the race. That meant, all he had to do was not finish last. At the drop of the green, Gerber made his way out front as McLean battled with Michael Varnes in the #95. The two made contact on the back straightaway, sending McLean spinning and Varnes pit side with a flat tire. With tragedy being avoided, McLean restarted next to Gerber on the second attempt at a start. Gerber was able to lead lap 1 as McLean had points runner-up and fastest qualifier Scott Lindell in the #19 on his inside. Varnes would make his way back up to 4th before the first caution flew on lap 3 as Rick Brink in the #57 made contact with the turn four wall. That ended Brink's night and sealed up the title for McLean. On the restart, Lindell made slight contact with Gerber in turn four, sending the #2 around. Lindell would have to tag the tail. After the restart, Gerber and McLean raced side by side for several laps before Gerber was able to take control of the top spot at the halfway mark. Varnes would jump to the inside of McLean for second as Lindell raced his way back to 4th. McLean was able to hang on to second. As the laps wound down, Gerber was able to clear the lapped traffic and take home the Season Championship trophy as McLean would finish second as the 2019 Points Champion. Following the Dover OH driver in the RV Parts Express, Swiss Auto Mart, Pied Piper Muffler and Tire, Boulevard Cleaner's and Tuxedo Shop, Bud & Tooties, Club McKay and Badstone Band sponsored #2 was McLean, Varnes, Lindell and Chad Squires.
The first Feature of the night was for the 30 lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's. Chris Grubbs in the #25 and the #577 of AP Ren brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Grubbs was able to move out front, bringing the 2019 Points Champion Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 with him. Schneider was able to seal up the points title a couple weeks back. Tony Urdiales in the #88 and Emerson Huffman in the #90 battled for 3rd. On lap 3, Urdiales got around Schneider to take over second for the moment. Schneider was able to get deep into the corners and take second back on lap 4 and he took the lead from Grubbs on lap 5. Cody Jaberg in the #22 was able to use the outside lane and follow Schneider to second before the first caution on lap 8. Huffman got into the back of Urdiales, sending the #88 around. Huffman would have to restart at the back. "The Codeman" was able to shoot past Schneider on the restart to take over the lead as fastest qualifier Brandon Short in the #18 moved to 3rd. On lap 10, Short was able to take second from Schneider in the high lane. The second yellow came out on lap 14 as Ren spun his machine in turn two. On the restart, Jaberg would hang on to the lead by less than a car length as Short tried to make the outside work. The two battled side by side until the final caution came out on lap 18 as George Riddle in the #0 and Urdiales made contact in turn two. Riddle would break a rear end in the accident, ending his night. On the restart, Jaberg spun his tires in the bottom lane, allowing Short to shoot past. As the final laps clicked away, Short would pull away to pay visit #7 to Naak Tuning Victory Lane. Rounding out the top 5 behind the North Royalton OH driver in the Direct Detail, Amsdell Companies, Earnest Performance and Hutter Race Engines sponsored #18 was Jaberg, Urdiales, Schneider Jr and Ren
The 25 lap Vanmeter Auto Repair Modified's were next to hit the Speedway with Todd Ripley in the #00 and the #99 of Derek Grewell bringing the field down for the start. In hot laps, Lucas Ripley would have issues with his #0, so his Dad and him switched cars. Because Todd won the last Feature, Lucas would have to start the car behind the fastest qualifier Doug McMillen in the #54, all the way back in the 12th position. Grewell was able to lead the opening circuit with Todd still there on the bottom. The duo would trade the lead several times at the line, but remained side by side. Lucas was able to use the outside lane to pick his way up through the pack rather quickly. He would get into the top 5, battling with Mike Stone in the #331, Rick Sibila in the #02 and Kevin McClintock in the #38 for position behind the two leaders. Grewell and Todd put on a great show until lap #9. Coming off turn two, Grewell's rear tires broke traction, sending the #99 spinning. He collected Sibila, ending Siblila's night. Grewell was able to continue, but had to start at the rear. That put Lucas to the outside of his Dad for the restart. Under the caution, Points runner-up Brandon Bailey in the #55 had an issue with one of his rear hubs, sending him pit side and ending his chances at a second Points title. With the Championship all but locked up, "The Big Dawg" shot around his Dad and into the lead. On lap 12, McClintock was able to take over the second spot but he was over 2 seconds behind Lucas. Phillip Cox in the #09 and Stone were able to make their way around Todd to take over 3rd and 4th but "The Big Dawg" was long gone. The caution that McClintock, Cox and Stone needed, never came and Lucas was able to take home his 4th victory, all but locking up the 2019 Points title. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Uhrichsville OH driver in the LTR Industries, D&B Machine, Mustang Trucking and Hammer Construction sponsored #0 was McClintock, Cox, Stone and Bob Page.
Mike Stuber in the #44 and Toby Cook in the #41 led the Finlayson Towing Compact field down for the start of their 20 lap Feature. Stuber and Cook decided to fight door to door, swapping the top spot until the caution flew on lap 4. Newcomer Tyler Schupbach in the #86 and Gavin Roup in the #43 made a colossal mess in turn two, that took some time to clean up. Once we were back under green, Stuber and Cook continued their side by side battle until Stuber was able to take control into turn one on lap 7. The second yellow waved on lap 9 as the runner-up machine in points, being driven by Bart Busby, stopped in turn three. Stuber and Cook would continue with their impressive battle for multiple laps. Both driver giving each other room and respect while racing hard for the win. Isn't that really what racing is all about? The duo would stay side by side, even though the final caution on lap 12. On lap 15, Stuber was able to take back control. The man on the move was Brent Shreffler in the #24. He started "tail end Charlie" (19th) and flat drove his way to the front. Using the 3rd lane, 3-wide, the 2nd groove and the bottom. It didnt matter, the #24 was bolted to the race track. The problem was, Cook was still clinging to the back bumper of Stuber in the outside lane. Shreffler would pull right up on Stuber's rear decklid, but Cook was just up far enough in the outside groove, that Shreffler couldnt make the outside move on Stuber. They raced that way until the final lap. Coming off turn two, Cook got a little high, allowing Shreffler to thread the needle. Shreffler got to the outside of Stuber throught turns three and four, setting up a drag race to the line, that Stuber was able to win by about 4 feet. Stuber would pull into Naak Tuning Victory Lane for the 3rd time this season. Following the Bowerston OH driver in the My Water Doctor, Ember Complete Care and Buckey Mowing and Snow Removal sponsored #44 was Shreffler, Josh Peebles, Cook and Dan Buckey.
The wild and crazy Buckey Mowing Street Stock's had Jeff Bowling in the #82 and Scott Richardson in the #95 leading the field to green. I'm going to keep this short and sweet, highlighting the positives because once again, there were a few cars acting as bulldozers instead of race cars. Bowling would take the lead early. "Camaro Hair" Colt Locker in the #118 made a beautiful 3-wide move on the outside, to move up to third after a restart, prior to that, he could have packed it in three wide on the bottom, but contact would have ensued, so he backed out. He would pass Bowling for the lead on lap 6. Rich Schweitzer, driving Bear Schwartz's #77, made a really good outside pass of Bowling for second and Locker for the lead on lap 9. Dennis Wood in the #88 got to the rear bumper and tried to get around Schweitzer for the lead, but the multi time Champion was going to make him go the long way around. Wood was unable to make the move and Schweitzer would take home an impressive victory in substitute fashion. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the McInturf Realty, John W Cooksen Drivetrain, Parkway Superstores, K&B Trucking and Schwartz Trucking sponsored #77 was Wood, Frank Boychi, Lucas Ripley and Locker.
