Woodie Takes Home The Cash At Midvale
June 23, 2001
Woodie Takes Home The Cash At MidvaleAn extremely busy night of action was on tap this past Saturday, June 23, as all five divisions, totaling over 130 cars, were in action. Also on the card were visits from Speedo the Clown, the Dale’s Heating and Cooling Figure 8’s, and a special match race for the Late Models and Modifieds.

For the first time at the 3/10-mile oval, a match race was held for the four fastest qualifiers from each the Late Model and Modified divisions. After qualifications had taken place, Kenny Carroll was the top Late Model qualifier with a 14.89. Mike Miller (14.93), Bear Schwartz (14.94), and Don Harvey (14.95) were the other Late Model drivers that qualified. In the Modified division, Mark Striker and Dusty Woodie tied for quick time at 14.79, but it was Striker who won the tie-breaker. Jeff Walker (15.04) and Butch Erickson (15.14) rounded out the top four. At 6 o’clock, all eight cars and drivers were brought out on the speedway to determine starting positions. Each driver, one at a time, had a choice of a case of oil. On the bottom of each, were the numbers 1-8. It was the two #50 cars getting the best two spots - Jeff Walker on the pole with Kenny Carroll alongside.

After the heats were complete, it was time to go racing in the 10-lap, $300 to win event. Walker, appearing at the speedway in his Modified for the first time in 2000, took the lead, as Carroll fell to second. On a lap 6 restart, the second and third place cars of Carroll and Miller hit each other in turn one, causing another caution. This put Modified points leader Dusty Woodie in second place, giving him four laps to get around Walker. On the double file restart, Woodie, by way of the outside lane, took the lead and went on to take the top prize. The, Coshocton Trucking/Roma’s Gift Gallery, #44 was followed by Walker, Mark Striker, Don Harvey, Jr., and Bear Schwartz. The Tolloti Pipe Modifieds nearly had a sweep of the top four, as they finished 1,2,3, and 6. Thanks to All Parts and Supplies, Performance Race Fuels, Racers Outlet, Fast Mass, T&T Pallet, Bob’s Auto Sales, Swan Fabrication, C.C. Performance, and Midvale Speedway for putting up the extra money for the race.

In the Smoker’s Paradise Late Model division 25-lapper, Tim Sibila held the early lead from his outside front row starting spot. However, in the first couple of paces, it was easy to see that his uncle, Bob Sibila, was on the outside lane and coming to the front. On lap 3, Bob Sibila, got an unwanted caution caused by Bruce Johnson. This lined up the top three single file, and the rest of the field double file, boxing him in, in the fourth spot. This allowed Bear Schwartz to make a run on the outside lane, but on lap 7, a caution did the same exact thing that it did to Sibila earlier – it boxed him in. For the next six laps, Farmer Smith used the outside lane as he tried to get around Paul Sibila, who was running second. Finally, after having the door slammed on him lap after lap, Smith made some contact with him and made the pass. On lap 16, he made his move around Tim Sibila for the top spot, and put his Dover Hydraulic/Budweiser #7 out front. Don Harvey tried several times to get around him, even making slight contact on the last lap, but to no avail as Smith won his first feature in two years. Harvey, Mike Miller, Bob Sibila, and Tim Sibila completed the top five. Paul Sibila, Gary Hoopingarner, Kenny Carroll, Tom Garbrandt, and Duane Dunn finished in positions six through ten. Dunn and Ron Dague won the heats.

Jeff Smith led early in the Tolloti Pipe Modified division with Ronnie Souders right behind him. The duo was running away with the race, while match race winner, Dusty Woodie was working his way through the field. On lap 7, Woodie caught the top two cars, and took second from Sauders, one lap later. Just past halfway, the point’s leader made his move underneath Smith, when he slipped up in turn three. Smith was later passed by Mark Striker for second, but Woodie ran away from the rest of the field for win #3 on the season. Striker, Smith, Lawney Vaughn, and Butch Erickson rounded out the top five, while John Wilson, Jeff Walker, Jim McCune, Souders, and Mike Bowers completed the top ten. Striker and Smith won the heat race events.

Waylon Orr jumped out front to lead the first five laps of the Detroit Iron feature event. After a lap 5 restart, Doug McMillen took over the lead, but another yellow negated the pass. This happened once more, but the third time was a charm for McMillen as he took the lead, using the outside lane, and went on to win the 20-lap event. Following the Speedy Auto Parts/Packard’s Garage #54 were Bill Aubihl, Joe Linard, Waylon Orr, and Tim Skinner. Dave Jordan, Roger Butler, Todd Miller, and Don Rufener, Jr. completed the top ten. The three preliminary events were taken by McMillen, Miller, and Tim Roudebush. Linard was the top qualifier.

In the Papa John’s Pure Stock class, Rick Elkins, Sr., took home top honors for the second time this season, in the Sonny Arkenburgh prepared ride. John Leasure, Mike Martin, Joe Oliver, and Adam Ridgway followed the Pass Moore’s Roofing & Siding/M&M Used Tires #15 across the stripe. Rounding out the top ten were Paul Parson, Shawn Harper, Anthony Bissett, Ted Oliver, and Larry Smith. Barney Gerber was the top qualifier, while Martin, Harper, and Dan Mick won the heats.

Tim Dreher took home top honors in the Canton Auto Salvage Compact division by holding off Billy Stutler, Rick Elkins, Jr., Terry Colletti, and Rich Fox. Jason Morgan, Jason Nealey, John McNutt, Greg Grove, and Greg Mazzoleni rounded out the top ten. Dreher, driving the Tusky Transmission/B.C. Pizza & Subs #8, won his first feature of the season.

Jack Grove won his fourth feature of the season in his Ron’s Heating & Cooling/Hoopy’s Auto Collision & Paint #93. Following him at the finish of the second Compact feature were Rocky DeLuca, Matt Wallick, Chad Squires, and Cody Kahler.

The final Compact feature was won by Dale Beatty, who was driving Terry McNutt’s #37. Beatty was followed to the win by Otto Polilli, Russell Grandison, Brian Oliver, and Ben Pearch. Winning heats during the evening were Stutler, Wallick, Jack Grove, and Robert Mizer.

In the Dale’s Heating and Cooling Figure 8 class, Brian Oliver took home the win. Ray Scott, Chad Squires, and Otto Polilli finished off the top four cars.

This coming Saturday, June 30, double points will be given to all competitors for the Tusco Net/Dover-Phila Credit Union Mid-Season Championships. Qualifying starts at 4, while racing will begin at 6:30.
