Over 120 cars were in action this past Saturday night, May 12, at Midvale Speedway. Week #4 saw five divisions of racing compete on a very cool and crisp night sponsored by Performance Race Fuels and Jayne’s Crafts.
The ever-growing Tolloti Pipe Modifieds had 16 compete this week in their 20-lap main event. Mike Buchanan started on the pole with John Wilson flanked to his outside. Wilson took the lead immediately when the green flag flew, and started to pole away, but a lap 3 caution pulled Jim McCune and Glen Jewell in tow. On lap four, two-time 2001 feature winner, Jewell, pulled to the outside lane and passed McCune for second. On lap seven, the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver went low out of the second corner and took the lead going into turn three. Dusty Woodie, another two-time feature winner this season, was also on the move after setting a new track record earlier in the afternoon. Woodie passed Wilson with a handful of laps to go and ran down Jewell, but could not get around the Texas Roadhouse/Hydraulic Parts Store #24. Following Jewell and Woodie were Mark Striker, Wilson, and McCune. Tim Allensworth, Brian Erickson, Tim Westerfield, Butch Erickson, and Jeff Smith. Mario Kelly and Jewell won the heat race events.
A very fast and competitive Smokers Paradise Late Model class was once again on hand. In afternoon time trial action, the top five qualifiers were only separated by .05 of a second. The spread was between top qualifier Farmer Smith with a 14.83, and Don Harvey, Jr., the fifth fastest with a 14.88. In the 25-lap feature, close competition between the 18 cars would again be displayed. Clinton, Ohio’s Mike Miller, via his outside front row starting spot, jumped to the early lead in his white and blue #79. Harvey, who started on the outside of row two, immediately bolted into second with Bob Sibila in third. The three cars would run bumper to bumper for the first half of the race as Marcus Malcuit and Farmer Smith also closed in. With just a couple of yellow flags, the five car break-away would remain in the same running order as they crossed the stripe at the finish. Miller, in the A-1 Auto & Spring/Allied Auto sponsored car, picked up his first win of the year and the points lead in the Late Model division by holding off the black #12 of Harvey – a car that has yet to finish worse than second. Sibila, Malcuit, and Smith completed the top five, while Kenny Carroll, Darrel Dexter, Gary Hoopingarner, Bear Schwartz, and Paul Sibila rounded out the top ten. Miller and Hoopingarner won the preliminary events.
Twenty-three cars took the green in the Tusco Net Detroit Iron division. One of last week’s winners, Tim Postel, put his #45 into the lead. However, as he, Tim Skinner, and Todd Miller were running nose to tail, the top two cars made contact on lap 12 costing Postel and Skinner chances at the win. That put the Jake Miller Excavating/Martin Homes #11 out front with only eight laps to go. Chris White and Doug McMillen made several attempts to get around the New Cumberland, Ohio driver, but it was Miller on top at the end. McMillen, White, Joe Linard, and Kevin McClintock completed the top ten. Finishing in positions six through ten were Bill Aubihl, Don Rufener, Jr., Gabe Pringle, Roger Butler, and Dave Jordan. Postel and Paul Murray were the victors of the heats.
Bryan Aubihl looked like he had collected his third win of the season in the Papa John’s Pure Stock division. However, after the 15-lapper had come to an end and with the post race technical inspections taking place, the first, second, and fifth place cars were disqualified for having too much camber. That gave the Used Tire Company/Crossroad’s Tavern #50 of Canton, Ohio’s Joe Oliver his first win of 2001. Rounding out the top five were John Leasure, Shawn Harper, Mike Martin, and Brian Wood. Jim Shaw, Chester McMasters, Larry Smith, Tammy Rufener, and Barney Gerber finished off the top ten. Harper and Vince Martin won the heats.
Rick Elkins, Jr. won his first feature of the year in the Canton Auto Salvage Compact division by way of the fast main event. Jason Morgan, who led until the last lap pass by the Alliance Machinery/Kermit’s Sandblasting #53, came home second with Jason Anthony, Greg Mazzoleni, and Robert Mizer finishing the top five.
In the second feature, Gene Morgan, driving a car recently purchased from Chris Flickinger, picked up the top prize. The Carrollton, Ohio driver, who earlier won a heat, held off charges from Rich Fox, Rocky DeLuca, Chad Squires, and J.R. Ridgway.
And in the final feature of the evening, Ben Gibson, of Freeport, Ohio picked up his first feature win. Jim Poole, Phil Veno, Adam Stewart, and Gary Gibson rounded out the top five. Billy Stutler, Jason Morgan, Gene Morgan, and Lennie Orr won the heats.
This coming Saturday, May 19, Canton Auto Salvage presents five divisions of racing plus kid’s bicycle races. Girls and boys ages 6-14 will have the chance to compete in one-lap races around the speedway for special prizes and trophies. Children ages 6-16 also can receive $2 off their admission prices if wearing their baseball, softball, or soccer uniforms. Qualifying starts at 4 with racing taking place at 6:30.
