Malcuit Takes Exciting Late Model Win
May 31, 2014
Malcuit Takes Exciting Late Model WinFans were in for a real treat this past Saturday, May 31 at Midvale Speedway. From the time heats started, all the way through the pursuits, and into the features, racing was as exciting as anyone could've hoped. All five divisions were in action, in addition to Spectator Drags.

16 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models lined up for the 30-lap feature as a couple others were pitside but did not start. One of those was point leader, Randy Smart, who found an engine issue after qualifying. When the green waved on the main event, rookie Joe Linard pulled out front into the lead. Linard led for the first 15 laps before a restart helped Bryant Smith race into the lead. Linards great run came to an end a lap later as he spun on the exit of turn two. The next restart aligned Marcus Malcuit to the outside of Smith. After two restarts to get to two to agree on where to start, Malcuit got rolling in the number one position. On lap 22, Alex Rosenberry raced past Smith for the second spot, setting up another exciting battle up front. At the conclusion of lap 23, yellow set up a restart between the two fast cars, with Malcuit and Rosenberry trading paint when the green waved. Malcuit, who definitely had the best car down the stretch, pulled away with his first Midvale victory in a number of years. Following the Strasburg, Ohio driver in his Malcuit Racing Engines/McIntosh Oil Company #75 were Rosenberry, Bubba Smith, Tom Stankiewicz, and Rick Sibila. The rest of the top ten were Don Harvey, Jr., Bob Schneider, Jr., Matthew Mills, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Larry Baker. Stankiewicz, Sibila, and Dave Martin won heats, while Schneider took the pursuit. Bubba Smith set fast time.

Don Boron, Jr. a rookie, and Glen Jewell, a longtime veteran, brought the competitive Summit Racing Economy Modified field to the green for the 25-lap feature. Boron, looking for his first win in the class, set his mark early leading the Jewell and a barrage of other contenders. On lap 13, the race's first caution waved for a Derek Grewell spin. On the subsequent restart, Jewell and Boron battled it out with Jewell edging Boron for a few laps at the line before Boron pulled back ahead. The race's second and final caution waved with 22 complete, giving Jewell one more opportunity. This time, Jewell made it happen. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver pulled ahead and on the final lap, Boron spun coming off of turn two. Jewell raced to the win with another rookie, Brandon Bailey, squeezing by Kevin McClintock for second. For Jewell, it was his first return to victory lane in his comeback from a ten year hiatus. However, in post race tech, both Jewell and Bailey were dqed for unapproved changes. Jewell for the carb and Bailey for rear suspension components. The join the long list of drivers who have had runs disallowed in the class this year. That gave the win to McClintock, his first of the year. The Federated Auto Parts/Blick Tool & Die #38 was followed in the rundown by Derek Grewell, Philip Cox, Shawn Marder, and Chris Piehl. The rest of the top ten were Adam Stewart, Boron, Tad Grove, Mike Bowers, and Joe Slentz. Stewart and Cox were credited with heat wins. Cox also won the pursuit while McClintock set fast time.

Bob Passwaters, Sr. was the early race leader in the J.D. Byrider Street Stock 20-lap feature. A lap four restart put division point leader Mike Martin in position to make his move. Martin moved by Passwaters and Waylon Orr shortly after the restart to take the lead. Following closely behind was top qualifier Rick Elkins, Jr. Each had picked up one feature win this season, with both looking to become the first repeat winner in the division this season. Elkins was hounding Martin on the high side but never could pull door-to-door. On lap 13, Elkins got the opportunity he was waiting for with a yellow to create a double file restart. Most thought Elkins may be able to get him on a side-by-side restart but Martin proved to be pretty tough when the green again waved. It was a thrilling battle that saw the two rub a little paint in the process. At the checkered, Martin took the win by just 2 tenths of a second. The Twin's Auto Sales/Shelbi's Sweets & Treats #6 was followed by Elkins, Dennis Wood, Gary Hoopingarner, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Josh Moss, Passwaters, Sr., Vince Martin, Waylon Orr, and Brian Lewis, Jr. Elkins set fast time with Mike Martin and Josh Moss winning the heats. Martin also won the pursuit.

Dan Buckey led Laney Strijewske for the first two laps of the Canton Auto Salvage Compact feature before the 2013 Young Gun took over. After an ensuing restart, Tim Frederick moved into second with Buckey dropping to third. Around the race's mid-stage, Jeffrey Orr started making his way toward the front. Orr took third on lap ten, second on lap twelve, and moved into the lead with one to go. Orr crossed the stripe in first with the exciting win with Strijewske inching Kyle Grove for second which turned out to be very important. In post race inspection, Orr's car was found to have a bit too much camber and his win was disallowed. That gave Strijewske her first career fast feature victory and her third overall. The Senor Pancho's/M&D Designs #17 was followed in the official rundown by Grove, Justin Renicker, Frederick, and Clayton Oliver. The rest of the top ten were Kyle Rector, Buckey, Blaine Salsberry, Larry Ennis, Jr., and Colton Cottis.

The second Compact feature didn't start many cars and due to some wildness, it finished even less. After a couple of failed tries to complete the first lap, Cristian Bailey took the early lead. His lead was for just two laps as Chase Beatty took over on lap three. Last week's second feature winner, rookie Gage Jaberg, used a lap five restart to take the lead for good. Jaberg raced to the stripe with the victory, while Ryan Shreffler kept him honest by following him closely. The State Farm/Fox Auto Salvage #21 was followed by Shreffler and Allen Clark while Seth Gibson and Bailey claimed top fives.

Compact heat victories were claimed by Oliver, Frederick, and Bruce Gibson. Frederick won the pursuit, while Kyle Grove set fast time.

Bruce George, looking for career feature win number one, led the first half of the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck main event before point leader Mike Martin was able to scoot by. Martin, who had claimed the first three features this season, showed his strength by taking his fourth. The Shelbi's Sweets & Treats/Finish Line Design #5 was followed by George, Cyler Bertram, Keith Anderson, and Derek Cordia. Martin took the heat while George won the pursuit.

In the Spectator Drags, Dale Doughty bested a field of 7 other competitors in action that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

This coming Saturday, June 7, the Street Stocks and Compacts will be running 40-lap features for extra pay and bragging rights. The two classes have put on some great shows this season and Saturday they will be rewarded with headlining events. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, and Mini Trucks will also race.

Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing action will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
