Midvale Beats Ma' Nature For Week #2

Midvale Beats Ma' Nature For Week #2UPDATE: On Saturday night, the carburetors from the top three Economy Modified finishers were taken for further inspection. This week, two of the three were found to not be stock out of the box carbs. The win by Todd Ripley and the second place run by Lee McCreery have been disallowed, therefore, changes have been made to the results and points.

Persistent rain showers hit the area during the afternoon Saturday, but Midvale Speedway officials decided to go forward with the program. Turned out to be a pretty good decision, as sunshine dominated the late afternoon hours and some pretty good racing took place for night #2.

After a strong field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models for the season opener, the field dwindled a little bit for the second night due to a number of reasons. Some mechanical, a couple for proms, one for a wedding, and another due to weather, however, those that did show up were pretty competitive and it set up for a fun night of racing. When the 30-lapper took the green, 2012 champion Rick Sibila, of Massillon, Ohio raced out front. Sibila had a good starting spot after a subpar qualifying run where he got boxed in a bit the last lap or two of the group session. Sibila won his fast heat and was doing what he needed to do early on in the feature during the first half of the race. However, at the conclusion of lap 15, Sibila went under his breakout time by .005 of a second. Two laps later, the veteran was under by .001 and caution waved to send him to the back. That setup a front row of talented veterans, Mike Miller and Don Harvey, Jr. Many looked forward to a great battle down the stretch. That battle, however, turned out to be short lived. Moments after the green came back out, the two hit door to door going into the first turn. Some felt Miller went up, while others felt that Harvey tried coming down the banking to quick. Harvey, subsequently, locked up the brakes and slid right front first into the turn one wall. Harvey was able to get it slowed down some, but damage was still too extensive to get going again. That realigned the front row with top qualifier Randy Smart as Miller's new challenger. Smart had a good restart and nearly cleared Miller on one of the tries but the veteran was able to pull back forward and race to the win. The A-1 Auto & Spring/DJ' s Auto Upholstery #22 was followed by Smart, Joe Linard who raced from the back to put rookies in second and third, Sibila, and Ron Kirkpatrick who has started his season with two top fives. Bob Schneider, Jr. was sixth, followed by Jesse Wisecarver, a dirt track competitor who impressed in his first Midvale try, Larry Baker, Harvey, and Bob Eichel. Kirkpatrick and Sibila won the heats.

East Sparta, Ohio driver, Don Boron, Jr. was one of the best in the Pure Stock division the last couple of seasons. This year, the young competitor moved into the tough Summit Racing Economy Modified division. After struggling through a couple of early season practices, changes were made to the car and with additional seat time, Boron is becoming a contender. In fact, Boron led the first twelve laps of this past Saturday's feature before last week's winner Lee McCreery was able to scoot by on a restart. Unfortunately for Boron, he picked up the pace once in second and broke out of his qualifying time, sending him to the tail. It also turned out to be a bad break for McCreery as he had a new challenger to fend off, Todd Ripley. During the opening night feature, McCreery beat Ripley on a late race restart to take the win. Ripley now had his chance for revenge. When the green came out on the lap 16 restart, the longtime Modified vet raced into the top spot, just as McCreery did to him the week before. Ripley looked to be in cruise control but a lap 22 caution for a Steve Mowery spin after a spirited battle with Tim Westerfield, Jr., set up one final chance for McCreery. Ripley again was able to get the advantage and raced on to his first win of 2014. Following the Dennison, Ohio driver in his Ohio Logistics/Bob's Auto Sales #00 were McCreery, Westerfield, Lucas Ripley, and Kevin McClintock. The rest of the top ten were Jason Grewell who had his best career qualifying lap, Mike Bowers, Shawn Marder who had a good night, Philip Cox and Brandon Bailey with his first career top ten. Bowers, Marder, and Ujcich won the heats, while Westerfield set fast time. NOTE: Tim Westerfield, Jr. was later declared the winner due to carb infractions on the Ripley and McCreery machines.

The J.D. Byrider Street Stock division has had two strong fields to start the season. Mike Martin, who finished a close second on opening night, was top qualifier and benefited from his brother Vince rolling just a 4 on the dice to set the invert. Dennis Wood, driving the machine that Andrea Hunter piloted on opening night, led the early stages of the event but Martin took second quickly and mounted a challenge shortly thereafter. By the completion of lap five, Martin was out front and on his way to building a huge lead. The race, which took just 6 minutes and 22 seconds to complete, went flag-to-flag and saw Martin win by four seconds. Following the Canton Car Connection/Shelbi's Sweets and Treats #6 were Wood, Josh Moss who had a great run, Waylon Orr as he showed improvement, and Vince Martin. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Sr., Austin Harvey, Gary Hoopingarner, Cody Collmar, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. Mike Martin and Bob Passwaters, Jr. won the heats.

Two-time Stock Compact champion Dan Buckey was forced into a new division this year with the elimination of the class. He stayed with the familiar front wheel drives and so far this season has been impressive, finishing second on opening night and leading the early laps of week #2. Buckey held the edge for the first nine laps before Blaine Salsberry took over. Salsberry, who showed signs of speed in the previous week's feature, looked like he had a shot for his first win of the year but division speedster, Kyle Grove was close behind. With just three laps to go, Grove took the number one spot away in his El Pueblito Mexican Cuisine/J.D. Byrider #3. Grove, from New Philadelphia, Ohio, cruised to the checkered with his second win in as many weeks. Salsberry, Buckey, Kyle Finlayson, and Clayton Oliver finished off the top five. The rest of the top ten were Jeffrey Orr, Larry Ennis, Jr., Colton Cottis, Wes Ennis, and Dale Beatty.

Bruce Gibson, a veteran Compact racer, led the early laps in the second feature of the night but it was a competitive event with a number of guys threatening to win. On lap eight, Chase Beatty became the rabbit. One lap later, Brent Shreffler garnered the top spot. Gibson went back out front on lap ten, only to see Shreffler take it away moments later. Gibson, while trying to drop back into line behind the leader, clipped Shreffler's right rear, sending the leader for a spin. Shreffler resumed as leader, while Gibson restarted from the tail. During a later caution, though, Shreffler's chance for a second win took a bad turn as he had to pull pitside with mechanical issues. Out of nowhere came Laney Striejewske, the 2013 Young Gun at the speedway. Striejewske, of Louisville, Ohio, drove to the checkered with her first win of the year. Following the TNT Television/Senor Panchos #17 were Gibson, Gerald Hahn, Gage Jaberg, and Zack Cogar. However, in post race tech, Gibson and Hahn's cars were found to have too much camber, eliminating them front the rundown.

Compact prelims were claimed by Tim Frederick, Dan Buckey, and Brent Shreffler. Grove set fast time.

Mike Martin made quick work of the Mini Truck competitors on the first lap to drive to a commanding lead. As everyone was penciling him in as winner with a couple of laps to go, sparks were noticeable from the machine as he drove into the turns. Up the banking he was sliding and the right front was hitting the track as the suspension had broken. Somehow, someway, Martin kept his #5 in the right direction to hold off a charging Keith Anderson, who came up just a bit short. The Twin's Auto Sales/Finish Line Design #5 was followed by Anderson and Derek Cordia. However, the second and third place competitors had a bit of brain fade and pulled pitside instead of to the pre-tech line on the backstretch, thus taking their finishes away. For Martin, he pulled off the clean sweep of the Street Stocks and Mini Trucks by taking qualifying and all races in both.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, May 10 with all five divisions joined by the Midvale Karting Series for a race at intermission. Also on hand will be a few of the Club Loose drifters to put on an exhibition for this Sunday's opener.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission will be $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non members.
