Exciting Opener Complete At Midvale
April 26, 2014
Exciting Opener Complete At MidvaleAfter frigid winter, three open practices, and a one week delay to racing, it was time to get down to business this past Saturday, April 26, at Midvale Speedway. All five of the weekly divisions were there racing for double points in addition to an exciting edition of spectator drags at intermission.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models, the headline division, had 14 cars line up for the season opening 30-lap feature. There were 15 pitside, not bad for an opener, but 2009/2011 track champion Bubba Smith experienced engine woes in practice and was unable to run. Ron Kirkpatrick and Bob Schneider, Jr. took Terry Colletti’s green flag from the front row, with Kirkpatrick racing into the lead. Behind him, Jonathan Reitter, sporting a new ride this year purchased off of the Redskin Motorsports Team that Bud Perry drives for, took second from Schneider and set his sights on the leader. The race saw its first caution on lap eight for spin created by contact between Mike Miller and Marcus Malcuit. Once back underway, Reitter took advantage of the double file restart and became the race’s new leader. Kirkpatrick held off challenges from 2013 champion Bryant Smith for a few laps before the Canton, Ohio driver was able to squeeze by. Smith, turning 14.0’s and 13.9’s once in second, was able to quickly close on and surpass Reitter for the top spot. Reitter’s car looked to be handling great but was down on power starting halfway down the straightaways. One lap after Smith took the lead, Reitter tried to make a hard run into turn three but made contact with Smith’s rear bumper, sending the leader spinning. Smith returned to the top spot for the restart with Alex Rosenberry inheriting the second spot. Back to green, Rosenberry gave Smith a run for the money on the outside lane but after a few laps dropped back in line. Rosenberry was able to get to the rear bumper a time or two in turn four but could never get back alongside. At the checkered, it was Bryant Smith picking up where he left off a year ago during his championship season. Smith took the victory in his Canton Auto Salvage/Canton Auto Sales #1, while Rosenberry was second and Marcus Malcuit rallied nicely for third. Kirkpatrick had his best career run for fourth and Randy Smart started his rookie campaign out with a fifth place run. Rounding out the top ten were Bob Schneider, Jr., Mike Miller, Jonathan Reitter, Larry Baker, and Matthew Mills. Malcuit set fast time, while Smith and Bob Eichel won the heats.

The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds had a solid field of 18 cars take the green with Joe Ujcich racing into the lead ahead of Jason Grewell. The drivers were a bit anxious over the first three laps, in fact bringing out several cautions and one red flag before getting a second lap in. The most severe mishap took place when Ujcich and Grewell were racing for the lead on a restart. Coming off of the second turn, Ujcich opened up the bottom and Lucas Ripley took advantage making it a three wide race going into turn three. Ripley got by cleanly but contact ensued between Ujcich and Grewell collecting several other racers. Tim Westerfield, Jr., Justin Courtney, Mike Bowers, Kevin McClintock, and Philip Cox were all collected but amazingly all continued except Westerfield. Finally, after a few more cautions, the drivers got some green flag laps in and racing was thrilling. Ripley and Grewell traded the lead a time or two before veteran Todd Ripley assumed the point. Ripley took over on lap eight and kept the top spot for the majority of laps except on lap ten when 2013 champion Kevin McClintock nosed ahead for a short time. McClintock made a great rally after an early pitstop. Ripley had two late restarts with about five to go where he was able to hold off top qualifier Lee McCreery. However, a yellow at lap 22 turned out to be the one that bit for the longtime leader. When the green waved, McCreery beat Ripley into turn one in the outside lane. He had an even better run through turn two and pulled ahead for the top spot and the eventual victory. Following the Double Eagle Tattoo/Jason @ Guess Motors #2 were Ripley, Steve Mowery who had a solid run for third, McClintock, and Courtney who rallied despite having a bent frame from the crash in turn three. Grewell, Lucas Ripley, Mike Bowers, Don Boron, Jr., and Shawn Marder completed the top ten. Courtney, Bowers, and Ujcich won the heats.

There seems to be a resurgence in the J.D. Byrider Street Stock division, as 14 cars were on hand and it was a pretty competitive field. Barberton, Ohio driver Cody Collmar took the early lead in the 20-lap feature with Gary Hoopingarner quickly moving into second. Hoopingarner moved into the tops spot one lap later with teammate Mike Martin assuming the second spot shortly thereafter. Top qualifier, Rick Elkins, Jr., raced his way into the third spot on lap six and started to pressure after a lap seven restart. Elkins, however, was boxed in as Hoopingarner was protecting the bottom and Martin was just fast enough to pressure in the high lane. Elkins pulled alongside on lap 15 and looked to be edging Martin for the second spot when a reported tire failure caused him to spin sideways and into the Martin ride. Both drivers went pitside for tire changes, while Hoopingarner breathed a sigh of relief. Hoopingarner held off former champion Todd Miller for a while down the stretch before Martin was able to take second back over. When the checkered waved, it was Gary Hoopingarner winning his second feature in a row, as he also claimed the Fall Classic win. The Chalmers’ Team/Shelbi’s Sweets & Treats #68 was followed by Martin, Miller, Elkins, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Waylon Orr, Collmar, Kyle Anders, and Vince Martin. Passwaters, Sr., and Orr won the heats.

In the fast feature for the Canton Auto Salvage Compact division, Kyle Finlayson took the early lead in his orange and blue #15. Blaine Salsberry, a former frontrunner in the Stock Compact division, raced by Finlayson on an early restart and started pulling away from his competitors. Unfortunately for Salsberry, a speeding ticket was given on lap five as he went under his qualifying time. That gave the lead to Kyle Grove who had just worked by Dan Buckey. Once out front, Grove put his car on cruise control as he made his way into Downtown Ford Victory Lane for the first time this season. Grove, driving the Trenton Service Tire/Brewhouse #3 was followed by Buckey, Clayton Oliver, Tim Frederick, and Finlayson. The rest of the top ten were Chase Beatty, Larry Ennis, Jr., Laney Striejewske, Lennie Orr, and Salsberry.

In the second Compact main event, Brent Shreffler, sporting a sharp pink, black, and red ride, grabbed the early lead. Racing saw a few early cautions that made Shreffler be on his game on restarts but Josh Roberts and A.J. Vasilliu, the two competitors that were in second during the race, didn’t have enough for the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver. Shreffler took his Pointe Carpet/Hotrod Motors #24 to victory lane. Finishing behind him in the top five were Vasilliu, Roberts, Cristian Bailey, and Ryan Shreffler.

Compact preliminary wins went to Grove, Finlayson, and Frederick. Grove also set fast time.

Last but not least, the Finish Line Motors Mini Trucks competed in a ten lap feature event. The division, in its second season, had a small count show up but did put on some decent races. Anyone looking to get into racing in a beginner type division, should check out the rules online and put one together. The division also features a decent payout.

During the 10-lap grind, Keith Anderson brought the field to green but Bruce George beat him back to the line to lead lap one. George went on to lead the next three laps before Mike Martin started edging ahead on the frontstretch. At that point, it looked as though George tried to sidedraft, made some contact and sent Martin spinning. Both were able to continue, with Martin inheriting the lead. The veteran driver pulled away down the stretch and raced to his first win of the year. The Canton Car Connection/Papa P’s Auto #5 was followed by Anderson, George, and Derek Cordia, a rookie. George won the heat, while Martin set fast time.

The first night of racing saw a very good crowd, despite chilly weather conditions. Racing was good, other than a few unneeded cautions here and there. Over the next month, fans attending will see continued construction improvements as the permanent restrooms are finished as well as the concession area.

Coming up this Saturday, May 3, all five divisions will be back in action on VanMeter’s Auto Repair night at the races. Fans will be treated to $1 hotdogs and $1 soft drinks in the concession areas. It will also be Twin State Auto Racing Club Night.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission will be $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
