Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | September 7, 2013 |
After numerous rainouts during the early portion of the season and warm weather late this summer, it is hard to believe the racing season is just about over at Midvale Speedway. This past Saturday night, season and track point champions were determined in the weekly 6 divisions of action.
In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, Canton, Ohio driver Bryant Smith came in with a comfortable lead as he looked for his first career championship. However, his older brother Bubba was within striking distance if problems arose. That would not be the case on this night, though, as the purple and yellow #1 started in the fourth starting spot and showed his strength early, pressuring early leader Jonathan Reitter over the first few circuits. Just as Smith raced into the lead, caution waved, putting him back to the outside of the #28 ride for the restart with four laps in. Back to green, Smith raced back out front as Bob Schneider, Jr. moved into the second spot. Schneider looked strong but not quite strong enough to get by Smith for the top position. Just short of the halfway mark, Schneider got shuffled to the high lane as Bubba Smith, Ryan Tedesco, Alex Rosenberry, and Mike Miller scooted by. Down the stretch, Smith held onto a sizable lead and was never seriously challenged by his brother, Bubba, Tedesco, Rosenberry, or Schneider as they finished in that order at the end of the 30-lap grind. For Bryant Smith, he not only did well enough to take the point title, he ended up with the sweep of the double point features this season, the opener, mid-season, and season. It was the fifth feature win of the year for the Canton Auto Salvage/Canton Auto Sales #1. Miller, Jesse page, Reitter, Emerson Huffman, and Joe Fewkes were top ten finishers. Smith also won the fast heat, while Ed Middaugh took the second heat. Tedesco set fast time.
Rick Sibila and Greg Hole brought a 20-car starting field in the Summit Racing Equipment Economy Modifieds to green for the 25-lap feature. Sibila, driving the Shaw Racing #8 for the first time this season, led early, as Hole was able to get to the bottom to settle into second. On lap five, Hole made a move on Sibila to take the lead, as the Massillon, Ohio driver looked to be down on power. Two laps later, the first caution waved, and slated leading rookie, Tim Westerfield, Jr. alongside for the restart. Westerfield shot into the lead when the green again waved and looked to be the unquestionable choice for the feature win. However, Kevin McClintock, who has led the points for much of the season was on the move. The good news for McClintock was that he had locked up the championship earlier in the night, thus taking a lot of pressure off of his shoulders for the feature. McClintock, like Smith earlier, was looking for the sweep of the race and the title. The veteran driver got his shot against the rookie with two laps to go when caution waved for a liquid spill all over the track. Unfortunately for McClintock, it was in the second groove where he was slated when the green again dropped. Over the final two laps, Westerfield kept his green #9 hooked to the bottom, while McClintock dropped in line. At the checkered, it was Baker Racecars/Wagner Fabrication car of Norton, Ohio driver Tim Westerfield, Jr. taking the victory over McClintock. Each finishes the point season, winning a division leading three features. Taking third was top qualifier, Steve Mowery, who has had a recent streak of good runs with three straight top fives. Mike Green brought his car home in fourth, while Bob Sibila, Jr. claimed fifth. The rest of the top ten were Justin Courtney, Mike Bowers, Preston Walker, Lucas Ripley, and Neil Rolli. Courtney, Rick Sibila, and Jason Grewell won the heats. For McClintock, it was his first Modified championship and his sixth overall.
Todd Miller led the first couple of laps in the Season Championship feature for the J.D. Byrider Pure Stock division. Fellow veteran driver, Gary Hoopingarner, raced around him and into the lead on lap three. A lap seven caution hurt Hoopingarner’s chances, as top qualifier Rick Elkins, Jr. had made his way to the front. Elkins took the lead after the restart and set a blistering pace, as expected. Elkins withstood a number of cautions and subsequent restarts as some rough housing was taking place behind him. Elkins raced to his third win of the season in the Stewart Flooring/World Import Automotive #62 machine. Following him were Don Boron, Jr., who was back in the car that he piloted for most of the season, Rich Schweitzer who took the championship after a great year, Hoopingarner, and Teddy Oliver. Schweitzer, the veteran racer from New Philadelphia claimed the championship after taking four feature wins following his return to asphalt racing. Schweitzer raced on dirt for a few years, where he claimed wins and a championship. He started his career in the mid 1970’s and has now taken three titles at Midvale in addition to one dirt championship.
In the Midvale Speedway Compact division, Braden Swaney had things in control by feature time when it came to point’s talk, so it was all about getting the feature W when the green dropped. Kyle Finlayson raced out front early in the 15-lap event with Bob Schneider, Jr. taking over second. With three laps in, the first caution set up a double file restart between Schneider and Finlayson, with the racing veteran taking the lead. Schneider was strong, but just four laps later he found out he was running a little too good, breaking out of his qualifying time, relegating him to the pits. When Schneider pulled into the pits, Jake Albright took over in the Mike Swaney #57. Albright led until Kyle Grove shot by with three to go. Grove stretched his lead over the final few laps and claimed the victory in his Greg’s Recovery/South Philly Pizza #31. Albright, Braden Swaney, top qualifier Rich Dunlap, and Blaine Salsberry were top five finishers. The rest of the top ten spots were claimed by Finlayson, Tim Frederick, Waylon Orr, Leeza Moore, and Justin Renicker. For the teenage driver, Braden Swaney, it was his third championship in as many years racing. Swaney won the Stock Compact championship in his first season, while claiming Compact championships the last two years.
Matt Salsberry, making his first Midvale feature start and Clayton Oliver started on the front row of the Compact second feature. Oliver led the first lap but it was veteran racer Dale Beatty taking command one lap later. Only one challenger was there at the finish, Eugene Kopp, Jr. and he wasn’t able to make the move to take his first win. Following the Buckey Mowing #75 of Beatty were Kopp, Laney Striejewske, Dan Buckey, and Clayton Oliver.
Compact heat wins were claimed by Grove, Striejewske, and Kopp. Dunlap set fast time.
Howard Bartholow took the lead on the first lap of the Funpact feature and led each lap thereafter to take the victory. Bartholow was never seriously challenged by the race’s runner-up and this year’s champion Dan Buckey. For Buckey, it was his second straight championship in the class, holding off Kohlten Bryan once again. Bartholow also won the heat, while Bryan set fast time.
The point leader entering the night was Tuscarawas, Ohio’s Doug Decker. The veteran driver won his share of features over the years in Detroit Iron and Pure Stock racing but never had won a point championship. In the feature, with the points locked up, it was about going for the win. Decker did lead the first couple of laps but Mike Martin took command on lap three. Martin protected the bottom throughout the race to fend off challenges from Cyler Bertram. Bertram, gave it one last effort on the final corner coming to the checkered but made contact in the process. Martin spun but the race was deemed official with Martin getting the win due to the contact. Decker, Bruce George, Billy Nicholas, and Bertram finished second through fifth in the official rundown behind the Shelbi’s Sweets & Treats #5.
The final event of the night was the ever popular Skid Plate race. Cars and vans lined up to compete with Bryant Smith leading the way early in a backup car, due to his not starting when he was about to grid. Smith led until he spun about halfway through the race and could not get the car refired. Taking over was older brother, Bubba, who drove flawlessly until he spun late. His lead, however, was big enough to hang on for the win. Brent Shreffler and Cory Williams finished second and third.
The final night of the 2013 racing season is this coming Saturday, September 14 at Midvale Speedway. It will be the Budweiser Fall Classic featuring the Late Model All Star Showdown and Trailer Race. The Late Models will be running two 25-lap features, paying $750 to win and $100 to start. At the end of the first one, a dice roll will invert the finishers between 1-6. Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Funpacts, and Mini Trucks will also be racing. The season’s only Figure 8 race, spectator drags, and an officials race are also on the card.
Pit gates open Saturday at 2:30, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 4:30, and racing at 6:00.
Grandstand admission is $15 for adults and seniors and $10 for kids 6-15. Pit admission is regular at $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
