Harvey Claims Win In Late Model Thriller
August 24, 2013
Harvey Claims Win In Late Model ThrillerDespite the fact that many eyes and thoughts were already on the double header scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, racing was still outstanding this past Saturday night, August 24 at Midvale Speedway. All six divisions were on hand with Spectator Drags, a McDonald’s Car Show Cruise-In, and $1 Dogs and $1 Pops in the concessions.

Another excellent field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models were pitside for a 30-lap feature. While last week’s top two finishers, Ryan Tedesco and Rich Rohrer, were not in the house, one or two others stepped in to compete for the $1,000 top prize, leaving the competition very strong. When the green dropped on the main event, Bob Schneider, Jr. raced into the early lead with outside polesitter Matthew Mills sliding back. Top two point contender, Bubba Smith and Bryant Smith moved into second and third quickly while Don Harvey, Jr. and Alex Rosenberry followed them in the top five. The race’s first caution came out on lap four, which slated a double file restart. When the green dropped, Schneider easily held off Bubba Smith, who started alongside. Trouble loomed just around the corner, though, as on lap twelve, Bob Eichel grenaded an engine going into the first turn in the bottom racing groove, collecting Jonathan Reitter. While the track was made relatively raceable again, it definitely helped the outside lane and Smith took advantage when the green came back out edging Schneider to the line right before another caution. On the next green run, Bubba Smith led, while Bryant Smith was trying to fend off the advances of Harvey for second. Harvey was running the high lane, while Smith was running the bottom. It was a heated battle that saw some rubbing of paint as both drivers were up on the wheel trying to get to the leader at the same time. With eight laps to go and Harvey pulling forward, Smith pushed up, giving it his all, doored Harvey and went sliding across the infield ending his chance for a fifth win. Immediately after the next restart, Harvey used groove two to race out front and pull away with his first feature win of the season. The defending NASCAR Whelen All American Series champion from Barberton, just put the engine back together after having numerous issues over the last couple of years. The victory for the Rittzman Muffler/Akron Auto & Truck Tire #112 made the work seem worthwhile. Following Harvey were Bubba Smith, Tom Stankiewicz who had his best Midvale run, Schneider, and Alex Rosenberry who set fast time but faded at the end of the event. Others in the top ten were Bryant Smith, Mike Miller, Jesse Adams, Mills, and Dave Martin. Schneider, Reitter, and Jeff Caiola won the heats.

15 Summit Racing Economy Modifieds aligned for the 25-lap feature with outside polesitter Mike Bowers taking the early lead. Bowers, who has been strong and consistent all season long, looked to have his best chance for his first feature win of the year. The field raced in very clean but competitive fashion, as the first 22 laps went caution free. During that time, Tad Grove moved into second with Tim Westerfield, Jr. to third. Behind them, Kevin McClintock and Todd Ripley, the top two point contenders were putting on a show, racing at the tail end of the top five. The first yellow, unfortunately, did wave for the front runners on lap 23, and really changed the whole complextion of the race, as Westerfield went to the tail and Bowers had a tire that was deflating and dropped pitside. That put Grove and McClintock on the front row for the green. When it dropped, McClintock used the outside lane to rocket off of turn two with the lead. As the laps wound down, McClintock held command to race to his third feature victory of the season to extend his point lead. Following the Blick Tool & Die/Dean Mowls @ Ferris #38 of McClintock were Grove who claimed his best Modified finish, Bob Sibila, Jr. who rallied late for third, Preston Walker who grabbed another top five and top qualifier Steve Mowery who was strong all night long. Jason Grewell, Lucas Ripley, Mike Green, Lee McCreery, and Westerfield finished off the top ten. McCreery and Grewell won the heats.

After burning some midnight oil to change the transmission and work on the setup, veteran driver Gary Hoopingarner took the early lead in the J.D. Byrider Pure Stock feature. With three laps in, caution waved for the first time and slated Josh Moss alongside and Teddy Oliver behind him. While Moss didn’t mount a challenge, Oliver did and raced by him before the next lap was complete. Mike Martin and Rich Schweitzer took over second and third moments later. Schweitzer did get by Martin when a second and final caution came out on lap 13 but wasn’t able to run down Oliver. For the three-time champion, Oliver, it took him a little longer to find victory lane as it was his first victory of the season. The McKeag Maintenance/PhilChalmers.com #49 was followed in the rundown by Schweitzer, Martin, Jeff Bowling, and Vince Martin. Hoopingarner, Moss, Dan Winger, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Adam Stewart completed the top ten. Stewart set fast time while Oliver and Moss were heat winners.

Brad McClain and Brent Shreffler brought a nice field of Compacts to the green for the 15-lap fast feature. It was McClain who held the advantage at the end of lap one, but Shreffler took over on lap two. The rookie driver, who wasn’t expected to be there due to transmission issues, ran well at the front of the pack, as Allen Clark moved into second. Caution at the halfway mark hurt Shreffler’s chances, as the New Philadelphia youngster started double wide with some of the fast competitors breathing down his back. Shreffler did lead the next two paces after the green came back out but on lap eleven, veteran driver Joe Oliver scooted by for the top spot. Kyle Grove moved into second as Clayton Oliver took third before the checkered waved. Following Oliver in his Vegas Nights Skill Games/Rob Julian Small Engine Repair #4 were Grove, Clayton Oliver, Clark, and Braden Swaney. Others in the top ten were Max McCartney, Brent Shreffler, Mike Swaney, Rich Dunlap, and McClain.

Former Compact star, Kyle Rector, made his racing return on Saturday night and despite problems in practice and qualifying, started to make some progress by race time. The progress, though, looked minimal after leading the first two laps of the B-Feature, as the car looked to be down on power. Leeza Moore grabbed the lead on lap three, while Brian Oliver garnered the advantage one circuit later. In what ended up being another good race, Oliver led all of the remaining laps but the 14th, when Tim Frederick had the slight edge. Oliver stepped it up on the last lap to clinch his first feature win of the season. Oliver completed the Oliver brothers’ sweep of their three features on the night. Following the Crislip Racing/Canton South Small Engine Repair #9 were Frederick, Kyle Finlayson, Blaine Salsberry, and Moore. Other top ten finishes were claimed by Laney Striejewske, Dale Beatty, Rector, Matt Helms, and Zack Cogar.

Compact preliminary wins were grabbed by Bob Schneider, Jr., Brian Oliver, and Kyle Rector. Fast time was set by Kyle Grove.

A new twist was put onto the Funpact road course as an extra chicane was added to the front straightaway, making the course an “incomplete 8”. Four cars started the event and it was Kohlten Bryan taking the early lead. Bryan and all of the other competitors really picked up the pace during the course of the night on the new track as they adjusted their braking points, line, etc. Bryan, though, had it figured out and pulled away with the “W”. Following the Smith’s Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #21 were point leader Dan Buckey, who was deducted several tenths of a second for actually missing several cones on the frontstretch chicane, Allen Clark, and Howard Bartholow. Bryan won the heat, while Buckey set quick time.

Keith Anderson showed definitite improvement with his Mini Truck this past Saturday at Midvale Speedway, as the former Sport Stock and Pure Stock driver led the first four laps of the feature. Doug Decker took it from him on lap five but Cyler Bertram followed closely to apply plenty of pressure. Decker protected the bottom, while Bertram looked high and low trying for a way by. Bertram’s truck, a rocket down the straightaways, came up short on this night, as Decker came away with his second victory of the season. The Tusky, Ohio wheelman made up more ground in the championship race, as the Badgett truck that leads the points wasn’t in attendance. Following the Decker Racing ride were Bertram, Anderson, and Calvin Tucker. Bertram won the heat and set fast time.

Bob Lowry, driving a Dodge Neon, raced to a spectator drag victory in a highly exciting championship event that thrilled the fans.
