Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 17, 2013 |
Dave Shullick, Jr. worked his way to the front of a wild 30 lap Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) presented by Adkins Glass feature event at Midvale (OH) Speedway last Saturday night and had the crowd standing as he sailed under the checkers, his second MSA victory of 2013. A full moon filled night saw a whole lot of take, and very little give as the MSA made there only appearance of the season at the eastern Ohio facility in the Baldy Baker Jr./ Sr. Memorial event. Shullick Jr.’s car seemed on a rail, but getting to the front was a task in itself.
Veteran Jon Henes and MSA Rookie Kevin Jaycox Jr. would bring the field to the start with the field in tow. Henes would blast out to the point as Mike McVetta would wrestle his way to the inside from his third starting spot and settle right in under Henes as the blasted down the backstretch. Jaycox stuck on the high side and getting shuffled back would find himself in the marble as the car would do a loop sliding up against the turn three wall just a handful of laps after the start. The restart would be one for the ages as McVetta would try the outside just after the drop of the green only to fall back behind Henes coming off turn four. By the time the pair got around turn two McVetta found the inside line and was able to get the bite he needed pushing to the lead. As the front two was setting pace, nobody was setting behind. The smell of rubber filled the air as cars would rub, shove, and bump their way around the 1/3 Ohio oval. Something would have to give, and that give was MSA Champion Trent Stephens spinning through the turn three infield grass. To the tail he would go refired and back under race conditions. Shullick Jr. now was within striking distance in third but still had work to do. The restart lasted two laps as Henes and last week’s winner Danny Shirey would bump their way around turn three until Shirey would spin off track. On this restart Shullick Jr. would get a head of steam and blister by McVetta to take command. And command he did sailing out front immediately opening up on the rest of the field, seemingly in his own zip code. Another handful of laps and a three car get together again in turn three involving Kyle Edwards, and two former Champions Charlie Schultz and Stephens again. All three to the tail and back racing we went. With five to go Shullick Jr. and his Bodnar ride was outlasting McVetta as Bobby Dawson with his Reed Salvage machine toured in third and Rookie driver Trevor Berry was fourth with the Steve Stout No. 49 holding off the charge of “Charging” Charlie Schultz in the May No. 7 Machine. That is how it would finish as the checkers flew for a thrilling, on the edge of your seat temper filled, tire rubbing 30 lap fire breathing night at Midvale Speedway.
“I was on a rail today, there is nothing else I can say,” said Shullick Jr. “In qualifying I just missed fast time by a little bit. The heat race was really good, we just cruised. In the feature it was a lot of fun racing those guys. It was pretty heavy racing out there in the middle of the pack. Once I got in front it was just taking it easy to make it to the finish. I have a great group of guys behind me. This car got crashed a week ago and they did a great job putting it all back together. Jim Bodnar, he does everything goes over every nut and bolt. I get a lot of support from my Wife and Daughter, my Dad, they all put up with this and allows me to come out and do this. The Gannons come out every week and support us, I can’t thank them enough. It’s just a great night,” finished the 31 year-old race winner.
In a turn of events Rookie driver Trevor Berry was moved from fourth to third when the MSA officials deemed Dawson jumped the last restart and penalized him two positions back to fifth moving both Berry and Schultz up a position. “I just can’t thank my crew enough,” noted Berry. “I have to thank my crew after that heat race crash the completely rebuilt the front of the car and got me out there to start on the tail. Luckily I missed a few wrecks and got my first podium finish. I don’t know how I got there; a couple times there was so much smoke I couldn’t even see where the other cars were. I have the best group of guys to work with, Shaffer oil and all of ACME Racing is just the best and I am blessed to race for them,” finished the 20 year-old second generation Michigan driver.
His best finish of the MSA season, McVetta was joyed. “You know, D J is tough. That car has been a rocket since they unloaded it, hats off to them. We had the best car we could have; we struggled all day through the heat race and qualifying. So, this is a good finish for us and we will take it. One thing we definitely needed was for the car to stay together, its nonstop in the shop working all the little gremlins out of this car. Hopefully we got them all now,” finished the 28 year-old Wellington Ohio racer.
13 cars wrestled their way around the tricky Midvale oval as defending series Champion Stephens would better his old track record of 12.331 setting a new record of 11.865 in qualifying. In all six cars where under the old track record. Both Shullick Jr. and Stephens would get heat race wins.
A season tying high of 23 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models were pitside to put on a great show again for the very solid crowd. While the top 16 qualifiers locked in through time trials, the final four spots were determined by the last chance race. When the green dropped on the 30-lap feature, front row starter Doug McMillen raced into the early lead with Mike Miller grabbing second. Caution and red would bunch the field after the completion of lap three for a grinding crash on the backstrech that badly damaged the Rick Sibila ride. When the green again waved, Miller used the second groove to race out in front of McMillen for the number one spot. By lap five, Bubba and Bryant Smith had moved into second and third, while Ryan Tedesco, the top qualifier, made it a wild four car battle by lap seven. Closing on the mid-point, point leader, Bryant Smith, tried the highlane a few times before dropping to the bottom going down the backstretch. Going into turn three, Smith tried to go low on Miller for the lead, but the opening closed up and Smith spun sideways to avoid contact. With Smith dropping to the back, Tedesco became the new second place car after a very quick run from his 13th place starting position. Back underway, Tedesco moved into the lead, while Miller held the bottom for second. A restart a lap or two later put Tedesco on the inside and Miller on the outside. After a couple of laps, Tedesco was able to clear him to pull out front, while second fast qualifier, Rich Rohrer moved into second. Rohrer started 12th in the event and followed Tedesco out front on lap 17. The veteran tandem was able to separate themselves from the field, though Alex Rosenberry stayed within striking distance for a few laps just after the midpoint. As the laps wore down, Tedesco was turning laps just slightly better than Rohrer and was able to put a little bit of a cushion between the two. As the checkered waved, the Dusini Drug/CC Performance Racing Engines #70 brought home the win, the second this year for the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver. Following Tedesco were Rohrer, Rosenberry, Bubba Smith, and Ron Kirkpatrick. Bryant Smith rallied for sixth, while Miller, Emerson Huffman, Tom Stankiewicz, and Ed Middaugh completed the top ten. Huffman, Jonathan Reitter, and Gene Molnar, Jr. were heat winners.
Jeff Bowling, racing in just his second career feature, took the early lead in the J.D. Byrider Pure Stock division. Veteran Pure Stock driver, Mike Martin, moved by him on lap three to set the pace. While it looked as though Martin was going to take the victory, a caution with less than five to go set up a double file restart between he and Bowling. Bowling pulled out front and cleared Martin to set the pace for the second time in the event. Rich Schweitzer, Teddy Oliver, and Brian Oliver were all threats to win in the event but heated short track racing action and spins cost all of them a chance. At the checkered, it was Canton driver Jeff Bowling taking the “W”, the first of his career. Bowling purchased the car off of point runner-up Don Boron, Jr. two weeks ago to start his racing career and he has brought home a second and a first. Bowling stated excitedly in victory lane that it’s in his blood now, he’s hooked. Following the Bowling’s Used Cars/Deville Apartments #82 were Martin, Brian Oliver, Bubba Smith, and Austin Harvey. Heat wins were credited to Martin and Harvey, while Martin ended up being the official top qualifier.
Allen Clark took the early lead in the Midvale Speedway Compact feature. After a lap two restart, Blaine Salsberry squeaked by and became the rabbit of the race. Salsberry set the pace for the next eight laps, as the field raced in double file formation behind him. On lap ten, a final caution waved to setup a race to the finish. Rich Dunlap threw his name into the hat for a possible first win this season and moved into the lead on the restart. Dunlap held on until the final two circuits when Kyle Grove, who had set fast time raced by him looking for his third straight feature win. Grove brought his #31 across the stripe in first, while Dunlap and Joe Oliver were close behind. In post race inspection, the top three competitors were found to have too much camber, resulting in the loss of their finishes for the night. Fourth place finisher, Braden Swaney, became the winner, claiming his third feature of the year. Following the CJ’s Drive Thru/Schwartz Trucking #27 in the rundown were Salsberry, Clayton Oliver, Bob Schneider, Jr. and Allen Clark.
In the second Compact feature, Gary Gibson led over Brad McClain for the first eleven laps. Around the midmark of the race, problems started to arise for Gibson, as his #83 was about to fail mechanically. McClain took advantage before Gibson’s car dropped dramatically off the pace to garner the lead. With McClain out front, Gibson was trying to hang on for a respectable finish. As the laps wore down, he fell to fifth, with McClain rocketing away from the field. At the checkered, the Leggett’s Tire/Buckey Mowing #80 of McClain was followed by AJ Vasilliu, Kyle Finlayson, Dan Buckey, and Gibson. Other top ten finishers were Dale Beatty, Colton Cottis, Laney Striejewske, Zack Cogar, and Michelle Walker.
Compact heats were claimed by Bob Schneider, Jr., Brad McClain, and Dale Beatty. Braden Swaney was credited for fast time.
Dan Buckey took the lead at the start of the Funpact feature when the green dropped. The ten lap feature event didn’t turn out to be a real easy victory, though, as Howard Bartholow applied pressure throughout. At the checkered, the Leggett’s Tire #50 of point leader Dan Buckey took the victory, while Bartholow, Allen Clark, and Kohlten Bryan finished off the top four. Dan Buckey won the heat while Bryan set fast time.
After setting fast time for the first time in his career, Bruce George raced into the lead early in the Mini Truck feature. George ran consistent solid laps out front, while Cyler Bertram was methodically working his way forward. Bertram started fifth but took over second on lap three. Bertram closed quickly and by the halfway mark was going for the number one spot. On lap eight, the young driver from Springfield Lake, Ohio squeezed by George for the lead and eventually the win. The State Farm Insurance/Bond Heating & Cooling #155 was followed by George, Doug Decker, Mike Martin, and Calvin Tucker. George won the heat.
Racing action will continue this coming Saturday, August 24 with Spectator Drags and Dollar Dog and Dollar Soft Drinks in the concession stands. All six weekly divisions will race.
Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing action at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
