Harrison Wins Another Super Cup At Midvale
August 10, 2013
Harrison Wins Another Super Cup At MidvaleIt was the second time in a number ways for Renick, West Virginia’s Jody Harrison in the Super Cup Stock Car Series on Saturday night. It was his second win of the season, the second taking place in Ohio, second dodging precipitation and his second straight win at Midvale Speedway.

Despite having to make repairs after damage sidelined him early last time out at Ona Speedway, Jody Harrison once again set the pace in practice and claimed his fourth straight pole award. Qualifying was a unique group session, in which drivers went out four at a time and their best lap would be their qualifying time. The random invert was a three, which by some strange string of luck put Todd Peck on the pole for the fourth straight race.

Todd Peck and Jim Crabtree Jr. started from the front row of the twelve car field, and Peck jumped out to the early lead. Harrison looked under Crabtree for second and Kevin Kromer looked under J.J. Pack for fourth, but all settled into single file until the first caution flew.

During this yellow, the track crew stopped Peck and checked underneath his car for an fuel leak. Turned out there was not an issue and Peck was given the lead back.

After the field returned to green, it didn’t take long for Crabtree to dive under Peck for the lead with Harrison following for second. The top three remained in those positions as they worked lap traffic.

Thirty laps into the race, Jody Harrison took his turn up front, a lap before the next caution flew for Codie Rohrbaugh’s spun #05. Rohrbaugh would retire from contention for the evening, ending his championship hopes for the season and perhaps put his season-long role as the rookie of the year favorite in jeopardy.

Another caution flew for rain drops, which plagued the remaining laps of the race despite a minimal chance of precipitation for the evening. Harrison maintained his lead with Peck pressuring Crabtree for second.

The next caution flew when Kyle Kromer spun his #52. This set up another restart past halfway that did not last many laps under green when Jim Crabtree Jr. spun out of second place. There was no contact and Crabtree claimed that he lost traction due to the dampness of the race track. Luckily, with the exception of a few stray drops the outcome would not be majorly affected by mother nature for the remainder of the 100 lap event.

Harrison maintained and at times extended his lead running laps consistently only two-tenths off his fast qualifying time. The charge on the track was from Jim Crabtree Jr., who started sixth on the restart. Crabtree dove under his son J.P. on the first green flag lap, and then moved up to fourth the next lap. By the twenty lap to go mark he drove past Pack for third.

At this point, the race would fall under a somewhat lengthy yellow when Kyle Kromer would grenade his engine. Speedy dry appeared to be an issue on the restart as Harrison drifted high in turn two where it had been put down.

Nevertheless, Harrison continued to clock off some quick laps. Crabtree moved into second with about ten to go, but would run out of time to catch Harrison. It was Harrison’s series leading tenth career win.

Harrison described the racing conditions in the closing laps after climbing out of the car. “When (Kyle Kromer’s car) flooded that motor there it moved the groove up about two feet. It was slick.”

An elated Jody went on to thank his mom and dad as well as his aunt and uncle for coming from Michigan to see him race. He also wished his sister a happy birthday.

J.J. Pack passed Todd Peck for third in the closing laps and Kevin Kromer finished fifth.

With Peck falling to fourth in the final finishing order, the points race tightened even more going into the final event. Peck continues to hold off Jody Harrison and Jim Crabtree Jr., but only by 29 and 38 respectively. Kevin Kromer and J.P. Crabtree III still have an outside shot and are still less than 100 points behind the leader.

The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds had a bit of a rough 25-lap feature event, but plenty of passing thrilled the fans. Jason Grewell, a rookie in the class, turned his best qualifying lap of the season and backed it up with a pretty good run in the feature. Grewell led the first lap before Lucas Ripley moved out front for lap two. The third generation racer continued out front before a lap seven caution created a double file restart. On his outside was top rookie, Tim Westerfield, Jr., who was looking for his third feature win of the season. Westerfield shot out front while McClintock moved into second after a later restart. On lap 13, the next caution would wave and slate McClintock in the outside lane for the green. When it again was displayed, McClintock shot out front easily. However, caution flew before a lap was completed. Another caution negated his next try as well, but eventually on a third restart, the current point leader was able to use the outside groove to race out front for good. Westerfield had an oportunity or two to get back around him on restarts but to no avail as McClintock brought home his second win of the season, extending his point lead. The Silver Angel Jewelry/Blick Tool & Die #38 was followed at the stripe by Westerfield, Mike Bowers, Preston Walker, and Bob Sibila, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Ripley, Steve Mowery, Grewell, Dave Dobbins, and Mike Green. Westerfield and Greg Hole won the heats, while Sibila set fast time.

Rick Elkins, Jr. set a blistering pace in qualifying, getting into the 15 second bracket with a new track record. Following qualifying, he did extremely well in his dice roll, setting the invert at just three. Rich Schweitzer, the third fast qualifier, started on the pole and raced into the early lead. Elkins quickly moved into second while Teddy Oliver dropped to third. On lap three, Elkins pushed a little high on the exit of turn four. When he slid back from Schweitzer, Oliver raced to his inside, initiating some contact. Elkins returned some contact heading down the frontstretch. Going into the first turn, the two had their chances for a win come to an end when final contact ensued. Elkins was done for the night, while Oliver restarted at the tail only to retire due to problems later in the race. From that point on, Schweitzer was able to cruise out front to a sizable lead and clinch his fourth win of the season, extending his point lead. The Alicia Manly MD/Federated Auto Parts #84 was followed by Jeff Bowling who made his first career start driving the 2nd place point car formerly driven by Don Boron, Jr. Mike Martin, Boron, Jr. in his dad’s car, and Austin Harvey rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Gary Hoopingarner, Tim Lynn, Josh Moss, and Teddy Oliver. Martin and Moss won the heats.

Things were quite interesting in the Compact division all night long. Before qualifying, tech officials decided to do a camber check on all of the cars. Very few made it through on the first try. A few more did make it through before qualifying began, allowing them to get in line. Out of the 23 cars pitside, only ten were allowed to take time.

Officials decided to place the ten cars that qualified in the first feature and the 13 that didn’t in the other feature. It actually made for some very good racing. In the first feature, Leeza Moore took early command at the front of the pack. After a yellow and a couple of restarts, Kyle Grove found himself leading the way with Joe Oliver, the top qualifier right behind. Grove protected the bottom with Oliver racing hard in the high lane. Joining them was point leader Braden Swaney. Swaney squeezed into second for a lap or two before Oliver pulled back forward again. Coming to the checkered, Oliver gave it one last effort but came up short, giving Grove his second win in-a-row. The Affordable Towing/Greg’s Recovery #31 was followed by Oliver, Swaney, Wes Ennis, and Kyle Finlayson. Others in the top ten were Laney Striejewske, Leeza Moore, Colton Cottis, Clayton Oliver, and Gary Gibson.

The second feature for Compacts was comprised of the non-qualifiers. Justin Renicker started on the pole and grabbed the early lead in the 15-lap event. Behind him, Tim Frederick, Mike Swaney, Blake Mackey, and Rich Dunlap were following closely while they jostled for position. Swaney made a run on Frederick and passed him for second on lap three. Two laps later, Mackey also cleared Frederick, setting up a top three battle. At the halfway mark, Mackey drove to the inside of Swaney and cleared him for second. Moments later, in a battle for the lead, Mackey dropped to the inside and Renicker slammed the door shut on the backstretch, with the runner-up driving into the grass to avoid major contact. Renicker continued to lead down the stretch with Mackey running him down again and racing him on the outside lane the last couple of laps. At the checkered, it was the Renicker Racing #175 of Justin Renicker of Dover, Ohio taking the win over Mackey, Dunlap, Frederick, and Allen Clark. The rest of the top ten were Swaney, Bruce Gibson, Jake Albright, Blaine Salsberry, and Gerald Hahn. Compact heats were claimed by Oliver, Frederick and Clark.

An improved field of Mini Trucks lined up for the 12-lap feature event. The field, though, was only improved for a very short time as impatience early eliminated Doug Decker, John Bertram, and Jason Wright from the field. When the field got rolling, Keith Anderson grabbed the lead but Mike Martin wrestled it away a lap later. Martin built himself a comfortable lead over the remaining laps and took the win by 4.199 seconds. Following the Canton, Ohio driver in the Papa P’s Auto Detailing/Shelbi’s Sweets & Treats #5 were Anderson, Calvin Tucker, and Bruce George. Bertram won the heat and set fast time with a new track record.

Allen Clark, driving for Chris Bloom, drove to a heat race win in the Funpact division by holding off challenges from Kohlten Bryan. Before the feature, Bryan and his team made some adjustments that helped the car turn just a bit better and he was able to get under Clark on lap two. Dan Buckey, the division point leader, moved into second moments later and started to challenge to the highside. As the race wore down, Buckey gave it all he had, pulling alongside on a couple of occasions. At the checkered, it was Louisville, Ohio’s Kohlten Bryan taking the victory, ending his streak of bad luck and DNF’s. Buckey, Howard Bartholow, and Clark followed the Finish Line Design/Finish Line Motors #21.

This Saturday, August 17, the MSA Winged Supermodifieds will be making their only appearance at the track this season, running the Baldy Baker, Jr./Sr. Memorial. Joining the fastest cars that compete at Midvale will be Late Models, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Funpacts, and Mini-Trucks.
