Rosenberry And Ripley Race To 50 Lap Wins
Super Cup Stock Car 100 Coming Saturday
August 3, 2013
Rosenberry And Ripley Race To 50 Lap Wins<br>Super Cup Stock Car 100 Coming SaturdayLate Model and Modified fields have been outstanding all season long and this past Saturday, August 3 was no different at Midvale Speedway. A full feature field is 20 cars in each class and the track has been fortunate to average somewhere in the neighborhood of 19 to 20 each week this year. Drivers in the top two classes were greeted by larger payouts and 50 lap races this past weekend.

Mark Willison and Matthew Mills brought a 19-car McIntosh Oil Company Late Model field to the green on Saturday night with Willison using the low lane to race out front in the 50-lap event. After just one lap and a lot of shuffling through the field, caution waved for Dave Martin and Bob Eichel for a crash at the back of the pack. Once back to green, Willison again pulled out front with Bob Sibila, Jr. and Bob Schneider, Jr. moving into second and third. It was on this green flag run that the fast cars started to maneuver their way from mid pack. Point leader Bryant Smith, Alex Rosenberry, and top qualifier Rich Rohrer used a methodical approach to work into the top five by lap ten. The next caution came out on lap 13 and set up a double file restart that looked to be the crucial point of the race. When the green waved, Schneider and Sibila went to the bottom which opened up the outside lane for Rohrer. Rohrer cleared Smith and started to work on the top two. However, it was evident quite quickly that his car was not going to cooperate, pushing badly on the outside lane. Rohrer tried for a few laps before eventually falling back in line behind Smith and Rosenberry after about five laps. One lap past the halfway mark, Smith decided to make his move. Looking to win his fifth feature of the season, Smith drove to the outside lane and worked quickly around Sibila and Schneider. Rosenberry followed shortly thereafter to move into second, while Rohrer worked by Schneider and fell into line behind Sibila. The next caution came out after the completion of lap 37 and set up a restart between Smith and Rosenberry. When the green came out, Smith cruised back out front easily as Rosenberry over shot turn one just slightly. After the field completed a lap, another caution waved. This time, Rosenberry hit his marks perfectly and took over the top spot on the backstretch. Rohrer also moved past Sibila and created a three car breakaway at the front. The final caution came out with nine to go but Rosenberry had no problem going back out front to hold off Smith and Rohrer to the finish. For New Philadelphia's Rosenberry, it was the biggest win in his young career. Following the Rosenberry Towing/TILT Lighting #2 were Smith and Rohrer who shuffled positions with him a number of times during the race. Ed Middaugh, making his first start of the season finished an impressive fourth, while Bubba Smith fought an ill-handling car to a top five run. Doug McMillen, Mills, Mike Miller, Jonathan Reitter, and Schneider finished off the top ten.

The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds had 21 starters line up for the 50-lap affair. Starting from the pole and taking the early lead was the division's leading rookie, Tim Westerfield, Jr., who has been on a tear of late winning the last two events. Westerfield raced out front, while Mike Bowers, who is one of the top point contenders this year, fell into second. Jesse Adams moved into the runner-up spot moments later as the field had a nice green flag run of 11 laps to start the event. After a number of failed restarts to spins or crashes in the field, the action got rolling again with Westerfield out front. Over the first 20 laps, one driver that was noticeably on the move was Todd Ripley who started deep in the field as second fast qualifier. The veteran was in the top five by lap 20 and in the third spot just a couple of laps later. It was also at this mark that Steve Mowery, who was running just his second Modified race at Midvale, moved into second. That trio of cars led the way up until lap 32 when Mowery got sideways coming off of turn four and slid down the banking into the right front of Randy Smart's #17. Both were running extremely well until that point, in fact, for the defending point champion Smart, it was his best run all season. With the crash shuffling the top five, it moved Ripley into the second spot and put him alongside Westerfield for the restart. Ripley used his strength to race out front. One more late race caution didn't hurt Ripley's chance as his restart was solid and again took command. Westerfield, who looked destine for a second place run, was clocked .15 of a second under his qualifying time late in the race and was sent to the tail as his car got faster during the race. At the checkered, it was the Ridgeco Pallet/D&B Machine #00 of Ripley taking his second win of the year. Following the current point runner-up were Bob Sibila, Jr. who applied a lot of pressure in the late going, Jesse Adams who had a strong run, Kevin McClintock who dodged a couple of bullets for a top five, and Tad Grove who rallied from the back for fifth. The rest of the top ten were Dave Dobbins, Bowers, Greg Hole, Aaron Prater, and Westerfield. McClintock set fast time.

Austin Harvey and Todd Miller brought a strong field of J.D. Byrider Pure Stocks to the green for their 20-lap feature. Miller, who won on opening night, raced into the lead as he beat Harvey to the line before a lap two caution waved for top qualifier Rick Elkins, Jr. whose right front was badly damaged. Miller led Don Boron, Jr. and Rich Schweitzer, the top two in points, over the first half of the race. On lap eleven, Schweitzer got a run to the inside of Boron going into the third turn. Boron started to shut the door and Schweitzer jumped on the brakes trying to avoid contact. The two, however, did slightly bump, sending Boron spinning. Schweitzer restarted at the tail, while Boron resumed in his spot but retired shortly later with a flat tire. With Elkins, Boron, and Schweitzer experiencing varying issues, Miller controlled the pace throughout, though Bill Shimko was having a great run in second. One of the impressive runs came from Teddy Oliver, who damaged his right front early in the race. Fans could see from the stands that the right front was not only towed out but leaning way over. Despite this, Oliver raced back into the top three and challenged up front. Eventually, the checkered waved over Todd Miller from New Cumberland, Ohio in his Linden Tree/Buckey Mowing #77 as he claimed his second win of the year. Shimko, Oliver, Schweitzer, and Gary Hoopingarner finished off the top five. Others in the top ten were Vince Martin, Kyle Anders, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Harvey, and Dan Winger. Elkins and Martin won the heats.

Can't really say enough about the resurgence of the Midvale Speedway Compact division. A class that was close to dead the last couple of years, has rebounded to the point that four heats and two features are run just about every night. On this night, the fast feature was exciting like always. Tim Frederick and Blaine Salsberry raced one another at the front of the pack over the first four circuits with Frederick out front. On lap five, Salsberry took over to lead the 14-car field. On lap eleven, Clayton Oliver moved into second and started to challenge for the number one spot. Going into turn three, Oliver made a little contact with Salsberry, causing the leader's car to bobble. Oliver checked up briefly before a little more contact took place. On the exit of four, Salsberry's #29 slid sideways and looped around collecting oncoming traffic, creating a hard hit. That moved Wes Ennis into the lead and put Bob Schneider, Jr. alongside. Ennis raced out front with Kyle Grove moving into the second slot. It looked as though the race would finish in that order, however, with 13 complete, another caution stacked up the field again. When the final green dropped, Grove dropped into the lane right behind Ennis. For one lap, Grove followed him closely but didn't get an opening he needed. However, on the final lap, Grove drove high into one to set up an inside lane pass of Ennis. The only thing he needed was the room and he got plenty of it when Ennis pushed up just slightly as Grove's car raced by. At the checkered, Grove's South Philly Pizza/Greg's Recovery #31 was followed by Ennis, point leader Braden Swaney, Allen Clark, and Schneider. The rest of the top ten were Oliver, Frederick, A.J. Vasilliu, Rich Dunlap, and Anthony Vasilliu. In post race inspection, the Ennis car was found to have too much camber and his strong run was disallowed.

Gerald Hahn was overtaken on lap two in the second Compact feature of the night. Moore, who has won her share of heat races this season, was looking for her first feature win. Moore ran an error free race through lap 14, as she held off challenges from Kyle Finlayson and Mike Swaney. On the last lap though, Swaney, the vet, made the move to take the winning groove and race under the checkered for his first career feature victory. Swaney, who has been so close to feature wins a number of times, was put into the second feature for the first time this season, as car issues have plagued him the last few weeks. Swaney, family, and friends knelt down Indy style and kissed the finish line because of the long awaited win. The Buckey Mowing/Swaney Racing #57 was followed by Moore, Dale Beatty, Finlayson, and Eugene Kopp, Jr. Other top ten finishers were Laney Striejewski, Brent Shreffler, Gary Gibson, Chase Beatty, and Hahn.

Compact preliminary events were claimed by Rich Dunlap, Blaine Salsberry, Colton Cottis, and Leeza Moore. Top qualifier was Jeffrey Orr.

The Mini Truck feature started just 3 vehicles so most thought the race would be a snoozer of an event. However, it was anything but and maybe one of the hardest fought races of the night. Doug Decker, a veteran of Detroit Iron and Pure Stock racing over the years at Midvale, raced into the early lead. However, everyone knew that the track record holding truck of Cyler Bertram would be the one to beat. With feature wins to its credit already this season, Bertram's powerful engine showed to be too much in the heat race earlier in the night. In the feature, Decker protected the bottom for the first seven laps of the eight lap event. On the final lap, Bertram raced to the bottom in turn one and made some contact. Decker then came down the track on the backstretch and returned contact heading to three. In the third turn, Bertram shot back up the banking and slammed into the side of Decker creating a spin and a yellow. After all three were lined back up, Decker again pulled out front with Bertram taking second. On the exit of turn two, Bertram had another good run at Decker but his truck got sideways and slammed into the right side of Justin Badgett's ride. Tusky, Ohio drive Doug Decker claimed his first win of the season, while Badgett and Bertram finished second and third.

Howard Bartholow, who won the most recent race on the big road course, was top qualifier for this week's big oval event for the Funpacts.. Bartholow took the lead on lap one of the event and never looked back, continuing his hot streak over the last few weeks. Well, he probably did look back because that is a natural reaction of someone that is in the lead. Nonetheless, Bartholow was never seriously challenged and claimed his second Funpact win in Bates Metal/Fries Valley Storage #115. Buckey, Chris Bloom, and Kohlten Bryan were the other finishers. Bartholow also won the heat.

Spectator drags were still exciting but not nearly the drama and crashes as the last time. Taking the win was Ryan Shreffler, who was driving a car that is going to be a Compact division racecar in a few short weeks.

Coming up this Saturday, August 10, the Super Cup Stock Car Series will visit Midvale Speedway for a 100-lap affair. Currently, Hanover, PA Todd Peck leads the point standings, while Muncie, IN driver Jim Crabtree, Jr. is second. A former Midvale event winner Kevin Kromer is third, while Jody Harrison is fourth, and JP Crabtree is fifth. The series has been drawing very good fields this season with between 15 and 20 per event. Many of the cars are former ARCA, Nationwide, and Procup rides.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, with hotlaps from 3:00-3:30 for the Super Cup cars, and 3:30-4:30 for Midvale divisions. The next 15 minutes will be designated for Super Cup practice and qualifying will get underway at 4:45. Racing action is slated for 6:30.

In addition to the Super Cup Stock Car Series, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Funpacts, and Mini Trucks will also race.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for Midvale members and $30 for non-members.
