Ohio's Fun Place to Race!!
2026 Race Season
Smith And Westerfield Take Their 2nd Wins
July 20, 2013
One week after a night with huge car counts and a number of torn up cars, things settled down a little bit this past Saturday, July 20 at Midvale Speedway. The car count was lower as many drivers were still repairing cars and others stayed away due to an unfavorable forecast, however, racing was still on the exciting side for the fans in attendance.

In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, it looked as though the field was split with two different classes. As soon as the green dropped, Bubba Smith, Bryant Smith, Alex Rosenberry, and Ryan Tedesco started dicing their way through the field with ease. Bubba Smith was the first of the fast cars to get to the front, which turned out to be a huge key. A caution set up a double file restart, putting his younger brother Bryant on the outside lane. When the green dropped, it was Bryant Smith two successive restarts racing out front. However, a couple of solo car spins negated his lead and created a third restart. This time, Bubba Smith was able to get just enough of a run to hold off his younger sibling. As the laps wore down, Tedesco was putting on a show getting to the front. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver had a subpar qualifying lap and elected to start at the tail to avoid breaking out of his qualifying time. His run came up just short as he moved into second but ran out of time trying to close on Smith. As the checkered waved, it was Canton, Ohio driver Bubba Smith taking his second win of the season, and family bragging rights for at least a week. Following the Finish Line Motors/Finish Line Design #12 were Tedesco, whose car was hooked up to say the least, Bryant Smith, Alex Rosenberry, and Jonathan Reitter. Mike Miller, Bob Schneider, Jr., Matthew Mills, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Larry Baker were top ten finishers. Bryant Smith and Ryan Tedesco took heat wins while Rosenberry set fast time.

The Summit Racing Economy Modified feature was another good one. Coming into the night, the division had seen 9 different winners in 9 nights of action. In this race, the first row starters, Lee McCreery and Lucas Ripley, had not won a race this season so the likelihood of another first time winner was there. McCreery set the pace for a good portion of the event, while being hounded by last week’s winner Tim Westerfield, Jr. Westerfield kept looking to the outside but the car was just a bit on the free side to pull wheel-to-wheel with the leader. Assisting Westerfield was a caution that set up a double file restart. Westerfield, when the green again waved, convincingly raced into the lead. Several laps later, Westerfield, a rookie in the class, had claimed his second win in-a-row and became the first driver to repeat as winner this season. McCreery, Mike Bowers, Lucas Ripley, and Todd Ripley completed the top five behind the GEL Logistics/Baker Racecars #9. The rest of the top ten were top qualifier Kevin McClintock, Bob Sibila, Jr., Shawn Kaufman, Shawn Marder, and Jason Grewell. Westerfield won the heat.

The very competitive Pure Stock field had one driver and car that stood out as the one to beat. In qualifying, Rick Elkins, Jr., in the Stewart Flooring #62, set fast time with a new track record. Starting behind a lot of strong challengers, Elkins methodically picked off a car at a time, working his way to the front. With Rich Schweitzer and Don Boron, Jr. claiming three wins each this year, Elkins had to pass the two top drivers in the division to take the lead, and that he did. The Waynesburg, Ohio driver took over the top spot and took the convincing win, his first of the season. The Stewart Flooring/World Import Automotive #62 was followed by Schweitzer, Boron, Bill Aubihl, and Michael Keefe. Gary Hoopingarner, Teddy Oliver, Josh Moss, Nick Harmon, and Dennis Wood completed the top ten. It should be noted that for a large portion of the race, it looked like Nick Harmon was going to take his second feature win in-a-row. However, on a lap 15 restart, Harmon drove into turn three, the throttle stuck and he pounded the outside retaining wall. The car was destroyed with flames coming out from underneath the engine compartment area where the fuel pump was knocked off. Fortunately, Harmon climbed from the ride unscathed. Oliver and Keefe won the heats.

The Compact field continues to be strong this season, leading to four heats and two features a night. In the A-Feature, Malvern, Ohio teenager Clayton Oliver got to the front with Braden Swaney and Kyle Grove close behind. Last week’s winner, Joe Oliver, had a couple of scrubs with cars while trying to get to the front so it slowed his pace, keeping the fast qualifier at bay. As the laps wore down, Oliver didn’t make any mistakes, turning great laps in his Vegas Nights Skill Games/Everhart Glass #19 and keeping the defending Compact track champion, Swaney, behind him. As the checkered waved, Oliver claimed his first Midvale Speedway feature victory and was followed in the top five by Swaney, Grove, Jeffrey Orr, and Bob Schneider, Jr. who rallied nicely from the back. The rest of the top ten were Oliver, Waylon Orr, Allen Clark, Mike Swaney, and Brad McClain.

The second Compact feature saw former Funpact/Stock Compact frontrunner Blaine Salsberry get to the front and defend the lead spot from a number of challengers. Tim Frederick tried, Dale Beatty tried, and Leeza Moore tried, but none could get a run needed to squeeze by the Uhrichsville, Ohio driver. The Philchalmers.com/M&D Design #29 of Salsberry claimed his first Compact win of the year and was followed by Frederick, Beatty, Moore, and Gerald Hahn. Others in the top ten were Laney Striejewske, Ryan Shreffler, Jason Yohn, Zack Cogar, and Jamie Beatty. Shreffler was driving a backup car as his primary car was destroyed in a heat race crash when his younger brother Brent and he tangled in turn four. Brent’s car possibly blew out a tire which initiated the contact and sent the two slamming into the wall.

Oliver, McClain, Salsberry, and Dale Beatty were the heat winners in Compact action.

The Midvale Speedway Funpact feature was on the big road course and was a bit on the rough side. Leading early was Alan Walker with Kohlten Bryan in tow. Bryan used patience, trying to set up a run on Walker. Eventually, he got the run he needed, or at least he thought he did. Walker, not wanting to give up the lead spot, ran him into the grass, eventually causing a flat tire. Walker, also cut a tire which moved Howard Bartholow out front. Bartholow ran strong to the finish, holding off Dan Buckey for the win, his first in the division. The Trenton Service/Bates Metal #115 was followed by Buckey, Chris Bloom, Joe Elerick, and Bryan. Walker won the heat while Buckey set fast time.

Cyler Bertram continued to drive the truck to beat this past Saturday. Bertram got out front and held off Doug Decker to claim the victory. Following the State Farm Insurance/Tony Newman Roofing #155 were Decker, Bruce George, Keith Anderson, and Calvin Tucker.

The Midvale Karting Series Road Course Cadets were on hand to run an exhibition race. Cody Stillion, an 8 year old from Richfield, Ohio, took the victory over, Beau Power, Ty Canoles,, Sam Bigham, and Braedon Scott.

Racing continues this coming Saturday, July 27 with the Twin 50’s for Late Models and Modifieds. Despite the additional laps and payout, grandstand admission prices remain unchanged.

Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing action will begin at 6:30.
