Plenty Of New Winners At Mid-SeasonPOINTS UPDATED.

After two straight rainouts, an unbelievable crowd gathered to check out the racing action at the Midvale Speedway 2013 Mid-Season Championships. It was also Christmas in July night with fans receiving plenty of prizes and kids getting the chance to win a large number of bicycles. The racing action was drama filled and all but one winner was a new face to victory lane in their respective divisions.

23 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models were pitside racing for the Mid-Season championship hardware. For the first time in recent memory, a last chance race was held to determine the final four spots in the starting field. Gene Molnar, Jr., Paul Slentz, and Joe Fewkes were the three drivers that missed the show, as they were unable to start the last chance due to car troubles. In the 30-lap feature, two veterans in Midvale Late Model racing brought the field to green, as Rick Sibila and Mike Miller started on the front row. Miller got a great run through turn one to take sole possession of the lead on the exit of turn two. After one lap was completed, a caution waved and reset the first row, putting Miller on the inside and Sibila on the outside. Moments later, the first of two major melees occurred in turn three with Tom Stankiewicz, Jesse Page, and Emerson Huffman all eliminated with damage. Once back to green, Sibila, like Miller, used the outside lane to race out front. After five laps were completed, caution would again wave. The subsequent restart set up a vicious crash on the exit of turn four. As Miller ran the high lane, the car broke loose, clipping the right side of Alex Rosenberry's #2. Rosenberry then veered hard right and slammed head on into the wall. The accident also collected Don Harvey, Jr. and George Riddle ending their nights. That moved the night's fast qualifier and point leader, Bryant Smith, up into the second spot for the restart. Back to speed, Sibila again raced out front with Smith patiently following behind. With 9 laps to go, Sibila pushed high coming off of turn four and Smith got a run to the inside. Smith pulled alongside at the end of the straightaway. Sibila, trying to hold him off, closed the door a little too much, and the two went spinning. Smith took over the top spot, while his older brother, Bubba, restarted on the outside. When green again came out, Bryant thought older brother Bubba jumped him so he didn't go until shortly before the finish line, putting Bubba out front. Fortunately for Bryant, just a few laps later, a final caution waved putting him back alongside. With the green out, Bryant retook the lead and raced to his division leading fourth feature win of the season. Following Smith in his Canton Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #1 were Bubba Smith, Mike Miller who rallied nicely for a third place run, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Ron Kirkpatrick with a solid finish. Larry Baker, John Sandquist, Matthew Mills, Bob Eichel, and Jonathan Reitter claimed top ten runs. Miller, Jesse Page, and Sandquist took the heat wins.

Jesse Adams and Mike Bowers were the front row starters in the 19-car Summit Racing Economy Modified feature field. Adams, a first year driver in Midvale's Modified class, took the early lead, while Bowers and Tim Westerfield, Jr. dropped in line behind him. A caution with three laps in put Bowers back alongside Adams and this time, Bowers took the top spot with Lee McCreery moving into second and Westerfield still third. Eventually, Westerfield moved into second which gave him a chance on a lap 17 restart to garner the lead, and that he did. As Bowers and he raced into turn one, Westerfield squeezed Bowers just enough to get the momentum to rocket into the top spot. Westerfield had to hold Bowers off on a couple of restarts later in the race for his first career Modified feature win in his rookie season. After coming close a couple of times this year, the Norton, Ohio driver put the Gel Logistics/Wagner Fabrication #9 into victory lane. The former Compact competitor at the track was followed by Bowers who continues to log impressive finishes, Preston Walker who almost raced to the front before a yellow cost him, Adams who had his best run of the season, and Neil Rolli who took his first top five. Josh Anders, Lee McCreery, Joe Ujcich, Shawn Marder, and Scott Archer took top tens. Much like the Late Model event, there was a multi car pileup on the backstretch that eliminated some top notch drivers as point leader Kevin McClintock, point runner-up Todd Ripley, and last year's champion Randy Smart all went pitside. McClintock, Bowers, and Ujcich won the heats, while Todd Ripley set fast time.

Teammates Vince Martin and Gary Hoopingarner started up front in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature with Hoopingarner leading on lap one and Martin taking over on lap two. Martin continued to set the pace until a lap 7 restart. It was then that second year driver Nick Harmon set sail, looking for his first career feature win. Harmon, who has been fast all season avoided all issues on this night and was able to hold off three time feature winner and current point leader Rich Schweitzer. After a couple of tries in the high lane, Schweitzer eventually settled into second and followed Harmon to his first win. The Massillon, Ohio driver went to victory lane for the first time in his Accurate Heating & Cooling/Joe's Auto Service #9. Schweitzer took second, while Don Boron, Jr. claimed third. Fourth and fifth were Mike Martin and Bill Aubihl. The rest of the top ten were Todd Miller, Vince Martin, Hoopingarner, Austin Harvey, and Teddy Oliver. Harvey and Miller took the heat race wins with Rick Elkins, Jr. setting a new track record in qualifying.

The resurgence of the Compact field has been a great story this season. With competitive racing all season long, the track is again running two features every Saturday night with four heat races the last two nights. And again, they put on one of the best shows with very few cautions and three and four wide racing. In the fast feature, Ryan Shreffler and Bruce Gibson led the field to green. Shreffler, led the first three paces until Allen Clark ran to the front. Coming quickly to the front were Kyle Grove, Joe Oliver, and John McNutt, three of the faster qualifiers that started at the back. On lap six, Grove took the top spot, looking for his second win in-a-row. Caution came out moments later, though, putting Oliver to the outside in Grove's former car. It didn't take long for Oliver to race out front as he powered down the frontstretch on the drop of the green. Oliver cruised to his first career Mid-Season Championship, while McNutt eventually took the second slot behind the Vegas Nights Skilled Games/Rob Julian Small Engine Repair #4. Grove held on for third, while Braden Swaney, the point leader rallied late for a fourth, and Allen Clark took home an impressive fifth. Jeffrey Orr came from the back to finish sixth, as Mike Swaney, Clayton Oliver, Brad McClain, and Tim Frederick grabbed top tens.

In the second Compact feature event, Blaine Salsberry took the lead from Logan Collmar on the second lap to set the pace. Close the halfway mark, the third lead change entered the books when Justin Renicker, who won a B Feature a couple of week ago, took over. Renicker had to fend off Bob Schneider, Jr. down the stretch which turned out to be costly as Renicker broke out of his qualifying time twice during the race. Tim Farrar, who jumped into Bill Jane's car for the feature, made an important pass of Schneider with two to go, one which got him the win due to the Renicker speeding ticket. Following Farrar in the Bower's Towing/Cater 4 You #59 were Schneider, Leeza Moore, Gerald Hahn, and Laney Striejewske. Jason Yohn, Zack Cogar, Renicker, Salsberry, and Eugene Kopp, Jr. finished in the top ten.

Grove and Bruce Gibson won the first two heats, while Laney Striejewske and Chase Beatty took their first ever wins in heats three and four. Oliver set fast time.

The Midvale Speedway Mini-Trucks, a new division at the track, saw its biggest field of the year and some pretty good racing. Former Sport Stock and Pure Stock driver, Keith Anderson, led the first lap before Mike Martin took over in the #5 ride, which was back after a long hiatus. Martin led until top qualifier Doug Decker took over on lap nine. He lead was short lived, though, as a valve stem cause a flat tire ending his chance for his first victory of the year. Martin took back over but Cyler Bertram raced out front with two to go. Bertram went to victory lane but had the win taken away after a postrace tech infraction. Martin took his first truck win of the season, though, his brother Vince won earlier this year. The Shelbi's Sweets and Treats/Papa P's Auto Detailing #5 was followed in the official finish by Jason Wright, who made his first truck start, Decker, Anderson, and Dennis Wood. Martin also won the heat.

Even though the racing was wild in the six weekly division, the most entertaining event of the night may have been the spectator drags. In the first round, a white 3/4 ton Powerstroke driven by Mitch Sommers crossed the line with the victory, he entered turn one in jubilation and didn't quite let off soon enough, slamming the turn one wall. Moments later, Sonny Arkenberg, a former racecar driver, got sideways on the exit of turn four. Arkenberg never did catch up to the steering as he wrestled the wheel. Eventually, he spun into the grass in the first turn, the tires caught some sod and the truck rolled over, Rusty Wallace style, spewing the truck's contents onto the grass. Arkenberg climbed out unscathed and eventually drove the '91 Ford Truck to the pits. Eventually, Kyle Finlayson took the championship race.

Good stories from the night included all of the first time feature winners. Only Smith had previously won this season. Fans also enjoyed all the giveaways for Christmas in July night. Thanks to all the businesses and teams that donated items to Adam Mackey as well as Linda and Gene Morgan. Again, plenty of bikes were given away as well.

This coming Saturday is a different kind of Bike Night, as motorcycle riders will receive $8 grandstand admission, sponsored by Adventure Harley Davidson. In addition, Ferris Chevrolet will be bringing kids racecar rides at intermission, giving the young fans a chance to ride around the track in the car of one of their favorite drivers.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will start at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
