Outstanding Field Of Cars Highlights Racing
Smith Takes Third LM Win
Points UpdatedWeek after week, impressive fields of Late Models and Economy Modifieds have been attending Midvale Speedway. This week, the Pure Stocks and Compacts had their best showings of the season, putting the total car count at 92, the highest in the last number of years. With a full moon above the track, racing was a bit on the wild side with some strange occurrences throughout the night.

The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model class continues to be the best top asphalt division in the state of Ohio. A full field of 20 cars lined up for the 30-lap feature event with outside polesitter Mark Willison taking the early lead over Mike Miller. A couple of cautions around the lap ten mark created double file restarts and battles between the duo for the top spot. About the third time the two went at it after a restart, contact ensued coming off of the second turn. The two spun in the middle of the track, while the oncoming field of drivers dodged high and low. Miller resumed up front, while Willison restarted from the tail. The new challengers for Miller were Bob Schneider, Jr. and the fast approaching, Bryant Smith. Schneider was unable to challenge, while Smith on the other hand proved to be too fast to hold off. Smith, the night's top qualifier, darted into the lead on lap 14 and never looked back. Well, he probably did but he had to squint. Miller held onto second until lap 19 when last year's champion, Rick Sibila, raced by. Bubba Smith and Ryan Tedesco took third and fourth not long after and started a great battle for top five spots. At the checkered, it was Bryant Smith taking his division leading third victory of the season to extend his point lead. Sibila edged Tedesco, who came from a dead last start, for second, while Bubba Smith took fourth. Indiana native Mark Lambert was able to get by Miller for a top five with a few to go. The rest of the top ten were Schneider, Larry Baker, Miller, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Jonathan Reitter. Schneider, Reitter, and Gene Molnar, Jr. won the heats.

Many times we talk about how great the racing was in the Summit Racing Equipment Economy Modified division. This week is not one of those times. Maybe it was the full moon, maybe it was a fluke, or maybe it was just a matter of atrocious driving but the race seemed like a marathon that would never end. Shawn Kaufman, a rookie in the class, took the lead from the outset with Randy Smart moving by Greg Hole for second in the first couple of laps. On a lap four restart, Smart used the outside lane to take the point from Kaufman. Smart, who has struggled this season with handling, seemed to have made some strides leading into this week's racing. One of the many restarts, the one on lap five, cost Smart a chance as point runner up Todd Ripley shot by to the outside. Kevin McClintock took second not long after and set his sights on Ripley. While the first five laps took around 50 minutes to complete, the rest of the race went rather quickly with McClintock running in Ripley's tire tracks. At the checkered, the CJ's Drive Thru/Ridgco Pallet #00 was followed to his first win of the season by McClintock, Smart, Mike Bowers, and Scott Archer who came from dead last. Neil Rolli, Ricky Grudier, Tim Westerfield, Jr., Lucas Ripley, and Joe Ujcich completed the top ten. Amazingly, Ripley became the 8th different Modified winner in 8 nights of racing. The field is the most balanced in Modified racing today. Mike Green, Smart, and Ujcich claimed the heats. McClintock set fast time.

Kyle Anders, Vince Martin, and Nick Harmon were among the early leaders in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. Eventually, one driver who has been having an outstanding season, Don Boron, Jr., used an outside lane pass on a restart to garner the lead. Harmon locked up the brakes going into the first turn and spun Boron in their battle, relegating him to the tail. Boron held on down the stretch to cross the line first over Mike Martin who had another solid run, Rich Schweitzer who rallied late in the race, Gary Hoopingarner who again showed improvement, and Bill Shimko. In post race tech, officials found non-approved suspension components on the left front which handed the win to Martin. For Martin, the win was the first of the season for the Papa P's/Canton Car Connection #6. The DQ moved Teddy Oliver into fifth, while Vince Martin, Todd Miller, Austin Harvey, Nick Harmon, and Waylon Orr finished in the top ten. Shimko and Vince Martin were credited with heat wins, while Oliver set fast time.

Saturday night had the best showing of Compacts since July 2, 2010, the last time 28 of the front wheel drive racers showed up. Tye Kelly and Donnie Leggett, III lined up at the front of the 15 car fast feature field with Kelly dropping like a rock and Leggett holding on early. Leggett, with Allen Clark in tow, led the field over the first five laps before former division champion, Kyle Grove assumed the point. Two laps later, Mike and Braden Swaney took over second and third and closed on the leader. Down the stretch of what may have been the best run races of the night, Grove didn't make any mistakes and held on for his first feature victory since his championship season. The Affordable Towing/Greg's Recovery #31 was followed by father Mike and son Braden Swaney, Jeffrey Orr, and Clayton Oliver. Others in the top ten included Blaine Salsberry, Jesse Patterson, Bob Schneider, Jr., Tim Frederick, and Leggett.

The second Compact feature saw Gary Gibson race to his second victory in as many weeks. Gibson was followed by Justin Renicker, Dale Beatty, Ryan Shreffler, and Brad McClain. After victory lane festivities, Gibson took a right turn out of the pits into the parking lot instead of going to tech and was thus disqualified. With that, Renicker claimed the victory in his first appearance of the season in the Renicker Racing #175. With the DQ, Kyle Finlayson claimed a top five spot. Top ten finishers include Laney Striejewske, Eugene Kopp, Jr., Josh Roberts, Larry Ennis, Jr., and Gerald Hahn.

Compact heat wins went to Jeffrey Orr, Bob Schneider, Jr., Leeza Moore, and Dale Beatty. Anthony Vasilliu set fast time for a second week in a row.

Point leader Cody Collmar led the first lap of the Mini Truck feature but Dennis Wood, driving the point leading truck, became the rabbit on lap two. Wood built a comfortable lead over the 12-lap event and went on to claim his first feature win at Midvale Speedway. Collmar, Keith Anderson who made his first appearance, and Doug Decker completed the finishers. Decker set fast time and won the heat.

Kohlten Bryan led early in the Funpact feature running the opposite direction on the mid-sized oval. The driver of the day was defending Stock Compact point champion, Dan Buckey, who was extremely hooked up on this particular track. Buckey took over the lead after using some patience to get by. Following the Eastern Ohio Hunting & Fishing Expo #50 were Bryan, Howard Bartholow, Chris Paul, and Chris Bloom. Buckey set fast time and won the heat.

Blaine Klein won the spectator drag event.
