Reitter & Sibila Grab Midvale Victories
Points Updated
June 15, 2013
Reitter & Sibila Grab Midvale Victories<br>Points UpdatedIn what was arguably the most thrilling night of racing this season, fans saw four drivers claim their first Midvale Speedway wins in 2013. The night also saw a streak go to seven different winners in seven Modified features. At intermission, an unbelievable amount of kids were on track in their bicycle and big wheel races.

The 3/10-mile asphalt oval has had great turnouts in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division. On this night, 20 were pitside, while 18 started the 30-lap, $1,000 to win feature. Jonathan Reitter, a Weirton, WV driver beat polesitter, rookie Matthew Mills to the completion of lap one. Reitter built a comfortable lead over the first eight laps, as the field behind him shuffled for position. On lap eight, the race's first caution waved to bunch the field due to a Ron Kirkpatrick spin.. After a long delay due to attend to a fan in the stands, the field went back to green. Immediately after the restart, caution waved again after a Tom Stankiewicz and Bryant Smith mishap. It turned out to be the final yellow in the event, as the 22 lap remainder would go caution free and see Reitter build a lead that eventually stabilized over Mills. At the checkers, it was the Your Auto Connection/Hooper's Rock Springs Parts & Service #28 of Reitter taking the win over Mills who had his best career finish, Mark Willison who was making his first appearance of the season, Rick Sibila, and Stankiewicz. The rest of the top ten were Bob Schneider, Jr., Rich Dessecker, Alex Rosenberry, Bubba Smith, and Bryant Smith. Mark Lambert, Reitter, Kirkpatrick took the heat wins, while Rosenberry set fast time.

Last week's top two Summit Racing Economy Modified feature finishers had the fortune of starting on the front row of this week's feature by luck of the invert. Last week's runner-up, Tim Westerfield, Jr. pulled out front ahead of the previous winner, Bill Westlake, to garner the early lead. The two ran first and second until shortly before a lap 16 caution flag. That's when Bob Sibila, Jr., driving the Tom Ertle racing #82 moved into the runner-up spot. Sibila lined up on the outside of Westerfield for the restart and shot into the lead when the green waved again. Just a couple of cautions slowed the pace down the stretch and each time Sibila and Westfield settled into the top two spots. At the checkered, 15 of the 17 starters finished on the lead lap, with only Shawn Marder (suspension) and Jason Grewell (tire) falling out of the event. For Bob Sibila, Jr., it was his first career Midvale feature win, having picked up wins at a number of other facilities but never Midvale. Following the Ertle Racing #82 were Westerfield, Todd Ripley, Westlake, and Kevin McClintock. Lee McCreery, Mike Bowers, Mike Green, Jesse Adams, and Doug Meyer completed the top ten. Todd Ripley, Neil Rolli, and Grewell won the heats, while Doug Meyer had fast time.

The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature was a doozy. While only twelve cars lined up for the 20-lap A-Main, the battles for the lead were fast and furious. Vince and Mike Martin, brothers, started on the front row and brought the field to speed. Younger brother, Mike, took the early lead and would prove to be tough to beat. Rich Schweitzer, a three time feature winner and current point leader, took second on the first lap and immediately started a challenge. Schweitzer tried the highside for several laps before Teddy Oliver, the night's top qualifier, squeezed by. Oliver worked hard in the high groove, in fact, beating Martin to the line on one of the circuits. A caution at halfway gave Oliver another side-by-side chance but he couldn't seal the deal. On lap 14, point runner-up, Don Boron, Jr. grabbed second and pulled alongside. After a heated battle, caution lined the duo up side-by-side with about five to go. After a lap of hard racing, Boron pulled ahead and went on to the victory. Following the East Sparta, Ohio driver to the win in his B&B Diner/Buck Hill Fabricating #82 were Martin, Oliver, Gary Hoopingarner, and Josh Moss. Others in the top ten were Austin Harvey, Schweitzer, Kyle Anders, Don Boron, Sr., and Nick Harmon. All but one starter finished the race on the lead lap. Mike Martin and Kyle Anders were heat winners.

This week's Compact fast feature was an exciting one and much cleaner than a week ago. Twelve drivers started the event, with Tim Frederick setting the early pace. Frederick led the first five laps over Clayton Oliver but point runner-up Jeffrey Orr was on the move. Orr took second and first in a matter of a lap and set sail out front. Eventually, Randy Hahn, who was making start #1 this season, took over second and closed the gap. At one point, Hahn got a look to the inside but Orr held him off. Orr later joked in victory lane that he fell asleep a couple of times. Following the Tusky, Ohio driver in his McNutt Racing/Tusky Transmission #8 were Hahn, Jesse Patterson, Mike Swaney, and Tim Frederick. Other top ten finishers were Braden Swaney, Bob Schneider, Jr., Oliver, Leeza Moore, and Wes Ennis.

Gerald Hahn, running his first season at Midvale after competing at Barberton, led the first two paces in the Compact B feature. After a lap three restart, rookie Kyle Finlayson took command from the outside lane. His lead would last only two laps as well, when Dale Beatty the veteran took over. Beatty's lead lasted just two laps as well, as the newly married Gary Gibson was able to get him on a lap seven restart. Beatty fell to third as Allen Clark took second and kept the pressure on Gibson. Following Gibson in his G&B Racing/M&D Design #83 were Clark, Beatty, Tye Kelly, and Laney Striejewske. Rich Dunlap, Finlayson, Hahn, Chris Bloom, and Ryan Shreffler were top ten finishers.

Hahn, Orr, and Finlayson won heats, while Anthony Vasilliu was top qualifier.

The Funpacts ran the midsized oval, formerly known to Compacts as the small oval from their heyday. While the heat race was clean and exciting, the feature turned out to be a bit of a charlie foxtrot. Joe Elerick led the first couple of laps through the caution plagued early stages of the race, however, Lennie Orr inherited the top spot on lap three. A lap or so later, Chris Bloom grabbed it away and looked to be in pretty good shape. However, on lap eleven, his bumper cover came off resulting in a caution which relegated him to the tail. That gave the lead to Kohlten Bryan in his Finish Line Motors/Smith's Auto Sales #21. Bryan was able to hang on for the win over Orr, Bloom, Howard Bartholow, and Elerick. Orr won the heat, while Bloom set fast time.

Despite starting just four, the Mini Truck feature was a barnburner. Point leader, Cody Collmar, grabbed the early lead, while Doug Decker moved into second past Dennis Wood. On lap four, Cyler Bertram grabbed the runner-up spot and started his challenge. Lap-after-lap, Bertram would fly down the straightaway, only to have his truck handle a bit on the ill side in the turns after a heat race mishap. Down to less than two laps remaining, Bertram got the run he needed and shot past Collmar for the "W". Following the Bond Heating & Cooling/Tony Newman Roofing #155 were Decker, Wood, and Collmar. Bertram also won the heat and set fast time.

Looking back, it was arguably the best night of racing overall this season with excitement coming in about every feature. It was the type of night that leaves race fans proud to call Midvale Speedway home.

This coming Saturday, June 22, all will be back for Autograph Night at intermission plus Spectator Drags. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Funpacts, and Mini-Trucks will be in action.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
