Ohio's Fun Place to Race!!
2026 Race Season
Tedesco & Westlake Claim Exciting Wins
June 8, 2013
Midvale Speedway is blessed to have the best weekly field of Late Models and Modifieds in the state of Ohio. For night #6, 19 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models and 19 Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds were on hand, racing for the top prize. Pure Stocks, Compacts, Funpacts, and Mini Trucks were also in action in addition to Spectator Drags.

The main event of the night was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 30 lapper. The event, paying $1,000 to win, saw 19 cars line up for the green with Bubba Smith and Don Harvey, Jr., leading the pack. When the green waved, Smith spun his tires slightly, helping Harvey take the early advantage. Once everyone was up to speed, Smith ran Harvey down and started a pass on the exit of turn four that gave him the lead spot. Meanwhile, his younger brother, Bryant, moved into second and started his challenge for family bragging rights. A lap nine caution slated the brothers Smith alongside one another for a restart. When the green was displayed, it was the younger Smith taking the advantage in the purple and yellow #1. Even though most thought he would run away and hide at this point, Bubba stayed close enough to challenge on the following lap. As the duo went into turn one, Bryant opened up the bottom and Bubba took the lane. In the middle of the corner, Bryant shot across the bottom and the two made contact creating a spin. In a tough judgement call, Bryant Smith was sent to the tail, while Bubba Smith resumed as leader. Through several yellows and subsequent restarts, Smith kept the lead over Harvey, but Alex Rosenberry and Ryan Tedesco were emerging as threats. Rosenberry, the teenage driver from New Philadelphia, Ohio, moved into the runner-up spot on lap 17 and started applying pressure. With five laps to go, Smith had his hands full, got sideways coming out of turn two and collected Rosenberry, who was looking to the inside. Smith continued from the tail, while the restart saw Rosenberry and Tedesco up front. When the green waved for the final time, Rosenberry found his car to be extremely tight after the previous contact put a fender on a tire. After some trading of paint, Tedesco was able to clear Rosenberry for the lead and the eventual victory. Following the Marathon Manufacturing/CC Performance #70 and the New Philadelphia driving veteran were Rick Sibila who rallied at the finish for another solid run, Bryant Smith who ran extremely well coming back through the field, Mike Miller who claimed another top five, and Tom Stankiewicz who backed up his good qualifying effort with a solid finish. Harvey, Rosenberry, Larry Baker, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Bubba Smith finished off the top ten. Bryant Smith, Matthew Mills, and Baker won the heats, while Rosenberry set fast time.

Jason Grewell and Lucas Ripley were the pace setters early in the Summit Racing Equipment Economy Modified 25-lap feature. Ripley took the lead on lap one, but a restart on the second lap cost him a chance at a feature win, as a mechanical failure forced him to stop. That put Tim Westerfield, Jr. into the lead position. Behind him, Bill Westlake moved past Grewell for second on lap three. A lap six restart cost Westerfield the lead as Westlake was able to clear him for the top spot. From that point on, the race stayed green with great racing through the pack after a slow start and a number of cautions early. Westlake was never seriously challenged, though Westerfield stayed within striking distance. For Westlake, it resulted in his first feature win in an 18 year career. Following the Roger Winget Chassis/Murph's RV Center #51 were Westerfield, Bob Sibila, Jr., Kevin McClintock, and Preston Walker. Others in the top ten were Dave Dobbins, Todd Ripley, Scott Archer, Lee McCreery, and Greg Hole. Sibila, Dobbins, and Grewell were the heat winners, while Archer set fast time.

Teddy Oliver and Nick Harmon started up front in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature. Harmon, driving a different car for the first time this week, led the first six laps with Oliver challenging. Harmon's primary car was destroyed in a crash on May 25, so a different car was built so he could continue this season. On lap seven, point leader and top qualifier, Rich Schweitzer made his move to the front. The New Philadelphia driver, along with Don Boron, Jr. have been the top two in the class all season, both winning two features before this night. Once out front, Schweitzer settled into a consistent line with Oliver moving into second. Down the stretch, Oliver had a couple of opportunities to start alongside on restarts but never got the run needed to garner the top spot. At the checkered, it was the Allen's Muffler & Tire/Federated Auto Parts #84 taking the win. Oliver, Bill Shimko, Todd Miller, and Boron completed the top five. Others in the top ten were Gary Hoopingarner, Kyle Anders, Don Boron, Sr., Harmon, and Waylon Orr. Boron, Jr. and Hoopingarner won the heats.

The Compact fast feature was arguably the most competitive and exciting race of the night. Eleven drivers lined up for the green and those cars seemed to be racing in a space big enough for about 8 the whole race. Looking like a Talladega or Daytona Cup race, two and sometimes three lanes of cars formed with trading of paint a regular theme. Anthony Vasilliu was the early leader and was fending off challenges from Tim Frederick, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Joe Oliver to name a few. Schneider, in fact, was running second early, got shuffled back in the field, only to again resurface in second for a short time. Eventually, point leader and top qualifier Braden Swaney made his way into second on lap ten. Two laps later, Swaney's #27 scooted into the lead and comfortably away from the vicious pack. At the checkered, the Trainmaster Inn/Schwartz Trucking #27 was followed by Jeffrey Orr, Kyle Grove, Vasilliu, and Joe Oliver. The rest of the top ten were Clayton Oliver, Frederick, Schneider, Mike Swaney, and Wes Ennis.

In the second Compact feature, rookie Josh Roberts led the first five paces of the event. On lap six, fellow rookie, AJ Vasilliu made his way by and into the top spot. Vasilliu, racing for just the second time at the age of 14, pulled away to a commanding lead as Dale Beatty raced into second and Gerald Hahn took third. The Vegas Nights/Crislip Racing #9 was followed at the end by Beatty, Hahn, Laney Striejewske, and Chris Bloom. Leeza Moore, Kyle Finlayson, Josh Roberts, and Allen Clark also finished in the top ten. Compact preliminary wins were claimed by Joe Oliver, Anthony Vasilliu, and Beatty.

For the first time this year, the Funpacts were on the old road course that the Compacts used to run on a semi-regular basis. A multi-car incident on the opening start eliminated Kohlten Bryan, the heat race winner. On the subsequent restart, Howard Bartholow had the misfortune of an accident that retired him for the night. Left with just a handful of cars, Dan Buckey raced to the front by making a three wide pass for the lead. The opening came about when Chris Paul slid up the track on Chris Bloom. Down the stretch, Buckey held on to a 2+ second lead to claim the win. His sponsor, Eastern Ohio Fishing & Hunting Expo had put up $200 for the winner and $100 for second. Buckey passed on claiming the money and moved it down the line. Following the eosportscomplex.com #50 were Bloom, Alan Walker, Paul, and Paul Stull. Bloom set fast time.

Mechanical woes for a couple of Midvale's Mini Truck competitors left for a small field in the feature. Justin Badgett, who claimed a win earlier this year, assumed the point early and proved to be the man to beat once again. The JoJo's Drive Thru/Holub Recycling #22 was followed by Dennis Wood and Tony Parson at the finish. Shelby Salchak took the feature winning truck to a heat win earlier in the night.

In the Spectator Drags, a number of exciting races were on the docket with Michael Stringer, Jr. taking the win in his Honda.

Racing will continue this coming Saturday, June 15 when Canton Auto Sales and Canton Auto Salvage present Big Brother's Big Sister's Night at the races. At intermission, kids 15 and under will be competing in bike and big wheel races, if they bring their ride from home. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Mini Trucks, Compacts, and Funpacts will all be in action.

Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
