Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2025 Race Season |
 | August 18, 2012 |
For the first time since 2003, the MSA Supermodifieds were at Midvale Speedway. Joining the winged Super division in front of a huge crowd were Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Spectator Drags.
In the much anticipated qualifying session for the Supermodified division, Trent Stephens set a 12.331 for quick time. Stephens, who earlier in the week asked on Midvale’s facebook what the track record was, broke it by over two tenths. Dave Shullick, Jr., Matt Marlowe, Charlie Schultz, and Mike McVetta were also in the top five. In heat race action, Bobby Dawson, who hadn’t run at the track since the late 1970’s and Mike McVetta, who set fast time in practice were the winners.
After pushing off the starting field, fans stood to their feet to send the drivers off by saluting them on the wave lap. Two laps later, the field was racing at extremely fast speeds on the 3/10-mile oval. At the front of the pack at the completion of the first lap was Buffalo, New York driver Bob Reis, while Jim Paller fell to second. The race’s first caution waved on lap three when Jon Henes spun heading into turn three. Three other drivers looped their rides to avoid contact and all were able to continue.
When the green again waved, former Grafton, Ohio driver now calling Tennessee home, Kyle Edwards shot by for the top spot. Edwards led for the next two paces before caution and then red was displayed for a hard crash by Henes in turn three. Henes was okay, though his racer sustained heavy frontend damage.
Once back to green, Edwards set a commanding pace, leading the field convincingly around the oval as the faster qualifiers moved from the back. On lap 17, caution was thrown for Edwards who unfortunately broke out of his qualifying time for a second time during the evening. He also had done the same during the heat race earlier in the night as the car continued to get quicker and quicker.
That gave the lead to Dawson, who was looking for his fourth career MSA win. Dawson’s lead was shortlived, though, as Dave Shullick, Jr. and Charlie Schultz slipped by almost immediately after the restart.
Down the stretch, the two drivers put on a display of driving that saw them turn laps even faster than what was seen in qualifying. Scoring loop data shows Shullick at a 13.223 on lap 23 and Schultz at a 13.228 on the next to last lap. Both drivers were consistent and equal as they raced to the Denise Dacek’s checkered flag.
At the stripe, it was North Ridgeville, Ohio’s Dave Shullick, Jr. taking his series’ leading 23rd career victory. Following the 3-time series winner and 2001 Midvale event winner were Schultz, Dawson, Stephens, and Reis. Others in the top ten were Jim Paller, Jack Smith, Matt Marlowe, Edwards, and A.J. Lisiecki.
Doug Meyer and Dave Dobbins, two veteran racers, brought a solid field of Summit Racing Economy Modifieds to the green flag. At the end of the first lap, it was Canton’s Meyer leading the way with hopes of corraling his second Midvale victory of the season. The race’s first caution came out on lap nine when Adam Stewart and Alex Rosenberry made contact heading into the third turn, creating a Stewart spin. The double file restart put Dobbins back on the outside and moved Rosenberry into the third position. When the green dropped, Dobbins slid back in the outside lane and Rosenberry became the race’s runner-up. Over the next ten plus laps, Meyer and Rosenberry ran in a two-car breakaway, while Dobbins was trying to hold off top qualifier Randy Smart. With four laps to go, Smart drove to the bottomside of Dobbins heading into the third turn. Eventually, the two made contact as Dobbins went spinning. Over the final four laps, Meyer held off the strong challenge from Rosenberry for his second feature win of the year. Following the Bob’s Auto Sales/All Parts Auto Care #31 were Rosenberry, Dobbins, Scott Archer, and Kevin McClintock. Others in the top ten were Mike Miller, Lee McCreery, Matthew Mills, Stewart, and Mike Green. Meyer and McCreery won the heats, while Green took the pursuit.
Nick Harmon and Adam White started on the front row for the 20-lap Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature but at the end of lap one, Don Boron, Jr. found himself out front after making a bold move. The decision turned out to be a great one as the race would go caution free and help him build up a sizable lead while others battled in the top five. Behind him, Harmon was holding off challenges from Teddy Oliver, Mike Martin, Joe Linard and others. Despite contact between a number of competitors and a sweet 360 spin by Tom Earley, the race remained under green conditions all the way to the finish. At the checkered, it was East Sparta, Ohio driver Don Boron, Jr. claiming his fourth feature win of the season in his Malavite Excavating/J&B Feed & Supply #82. Linard, Bill Aubihl, Martin, and White finished the top five while Vince Martin, Rick Pereces, Bill Shimko, T.J. Barker, and Paul Parson were top ten finishers. Teddy Oliver, the point leader, fell out of the event with a flat tire. Linard won the fast heat and pursuit while Earley took the second heat. Aubihl set quick time.
Tom Barrett set the pace over the first four laps of the Compact feature with Braden Swaney leading by inches on the fifth lap. However, bad news was looming for both as top qualifier Wes Ennis was on the move. Ennis took his A.J. Diano memorial #09 to the front on lap six and never looked back. Despite his dominating performance, racing was exciting to watch for second on back. At the checkered, Ennis claimed his seventh feature win of the season. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver were Swaney, Tom Barrett, Mike Swaney, and Larry Ennis. Barrett and Mike Swaney had their runs disallowed due to not meeting track requirements in the teching department, thus moving Dan Buckey and Bill Jane into the top five. Ennis was also credited with the heat and pursuit wins.
Chris Bloom, who fought a very tight car during qualifying and early in the night, led the first laps in the Stock Compact feature on the 1/5-mile. On the move was point leader, Dan Buckey, who had his car hooked up. The Sherrodsville, Ohio driver directed his car to the outside lane and went to the front, leading for the first time on lap seven. Down the stretch, Buckey held on to claim the win in his Eastern Ohio Sports Complex/Kuester Implement #50, while Bloom, Tim Frederick, Howard Bartholow, and Kohlten Bryan completed the top five. Bloom won the heat and pursuit while Bryan made his return successful with a fast time award.
Kevin Locker won his third Spectator Drag trophy of the season in a four door Oldsmobile.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 25 with a full six division program. Joining the Late Models, Modifieds, Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Mini-Trucks will be the Pure Stocks in a non-point race that was not originally on the schedule. It will be $1 dog night in the concessions and cups of pop will also be sold for $1 each.
Pure Stock competitors with a crate engine will be running a different chip this week to try and level the playing field a little bit more. Currently, the crate engines seem to make about a .3-.4 second difference per lap. The crate cars will be running a 5800 chip this week as a test.
Pit gates will open at 3:00, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:30, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.
