Bubba Smith Avoids Carnage In LM Win
Tedesco Extends Smart Point Lead In MODS
August 4, 2012
Bubba Smith Avoids Carnage In LM Win<br>Tedesco Extends Smart Point Lead In MODSA nice crowd of fans braved the hot and humid conditions to watch an action packed night of entertainment this past Saturday, August 4 at Midvale OH Speedway. The Late Models and Modifieds returned with 50-lap make-up features from the previous weeks rainout, while Pure Stocks, Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Mini Trucks also raced.

It may not have been a patriotic holiday, but there were plenty of fireworks in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 50-lapper. Gene Molnar, Jr. and Tim Sibila were the front row starters in the 16-car field with Molnar taking the lead in his return to action. The first five laps went without a caution, but on lap six, Preston Walker, driving the Randy Smith #121 lost control in the outside lane coming out of turn two. Mike Miller, driving the Jaberg, Jr. #22 got clipped on the right side sending him spinning, while Walker careened off the outside retaining wall with heavy damage. Jonathan Reitter was also collected. On the restart, Bryant Smith, a three time winner in 2012, started on the outside of Molnar. When the green dropped, many thought Smith would pull right into the lead. Molnar, however, slowed his pace by taking him up the track a lane or so in the corners. This, though, opened the door for point leader Rick Sibila. The Massillon, Ohio driver got to the inside coming off of the second turn to make it a three wide battle. Molnar slipped behind the two, as they battled through the third and fourth corners. Coming off of four, Smith got high, clipped the wall, came down the banking and slammed into the right side of Sibila's car. The two drivers drove through the infield, came back up the track and slammed into the wall in turn two. Both were done for the evening. Once the red flag was lifted, Molnar and Bubba Smith were the new pacesetters. Within a lap of returning to green, Smith was able to clear Molnar and set sail. Down the stretch, Smith built up a huge lead, despite a strong run by Rich Dessecker in second. As the checkered waved, the Finish Line Motors/Freedom Auto Finance #12 claimed the $1,200 top prize and his first win of the year. Dessecker claimed the second spot for his third runner-up finish in-a-row. Veteran Mike Miller, despite the whole right side of the body missing and suspension damage to the right front, made an impressive run through the field to cross the line in third. Bob Schneider, Jr. and Tim Sibila followed in the top five. Miller's run was changed to a last car on the lead lap finish after he failed to pull into post race tech in the pits. Alex Rosenberry moved into the top five with the change. Larry Baker was sixth, Miller seventh, and Molnar, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Jesse Page had top tens. Bryant Smith and Molnar won the heats.

The Summit Racing Economy Modified 50-lap feature was a good race, seeing plenty of passes. Two-time feature winner, Lee McCreery, took the early lead and set sail as drivers battled from behind. In a complete reversal of the Late Model event, this race saw only two cautions for minor spins and finished a large portion of the field. As McCreery led, all eyes were on top qualifier Ryan Tedesco. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver was filling in for the vacationing Randy Smart. Driving the point leader car, Tedesco started from the seventh spot and started his methodical approach to get to the front. His first moves came on lap four when he completed a pass of both Bill Westlake and Todd Ripley to move into fifth. A few laps later, Adam Stewart and Kevin McClintock got together while racing four third, moving Tedesco up another spot. On lap 14, he went around the outside of Stewart for the third position and on lap 19 took second from Justin Courtney. At that point, McCreery had a sizable lead but Tedesco was cutting into it little-by-little. However, he received additional help from a lap 27 caution flag. On the double file restart, Tedesco raced into the lead and eventually pulled away with the victory. Following the Dr. Kurt Garren/Wissman Motorsports #17 were McCreery with another solid run, Adam Stewart in his newly purchased car, Scott Archer who came on strong in the Rosenberry car, and Bill Westlake who was impressive midrace in the outside lane. The rest of the top ten were McClintock, Courtney, Neil Rolli, Matthew Mills, and Todd Ripley. Tedesco and Mills won the heats.

Looking for feature win number one on the season, Teddy Oliver started up front took the early lead in the Pure Stock division. The Canton, Ohio driver came into the weekend with the point lead but hadn't found victory lane yet this year. Joe Linard followed him closely during the early laps of the main event, before Gary Hoopingarner became his challenger on lap twelve. Over the last eight laps, Oliver protected the bottom lane and Hoopingarner came up a close second. The Wissman Motorsports/Stewart Flooring #49 was followed by Hoopingarner, Bill Aubihl, Linard, and Mike Martin. Others in the top ten were Don Boron, Jr., Nick Harmon, George Bowers, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Bill Shimko. Oliver won the fast heat and pursuit, while Harmon won the second heat.

Kyle Rector, of New Philadelphia, Ohio, held off a competitive field of 3/10-mile Compacts for his first feature win of the year. Point leader Braden Swaney had a good run to finish second, while Wes Ennis, Dustin DelVecchio, and Joe Fewkes claimed top fives. Rector also won the heat and pursuit. Ennis was top qualifier.

Allen Clark was the leader over the first three laps in the Stock Compact 1/5-mile race. Teammate Mike Swaney, driving on the small oval for the first time this season, continued his strong night by taking the lead on lap four. The veteran driver was building up a nice cushion, but his problem turned out to be the speed police. On lap seven, Swaney was given the black flag for breaking out of his qualifying time. The speeding violation gave the lead to Wes Ennis, driving the Tim Frederick owned #41. As the laps wound down, Ennis held down Frederick who was filling in for Chris Bloom. Clark, Corey Evey, and Howard Bartholow were top five finishers. On a night in which the Stock Compact drivers put on a great clean show, Swaney won the heat, Clark the pursuit, and Evey set fast time.

The Mini Trucks, a new class added for most of the remaining events, had its biggest showing of the year. In qualifications, Robbie Patterson set quick time in the Troy Campbell #71 truck. When the green dropped in the feature race, Tom Garlick, the "seasoned" truck veteran, raced into the top spot with Dennis Garrett, III running second. With caution waving on lap three, the field again doubled up for a restart. With a bold move, Mike Martin, in a newly purchased truck raced past the first two to take the lead. Martin, in the Shelbi's Sweets & Treats/Canton Car Connection #5 cruised into the top spot and went on to claim the convincing victory. Todd Shultz, Patterson, Rolly Heyder, Jr., and Bob Parson finished off the top five. Others in the top ten were Justin Badgett, Garlick, Jerry Gardner, Logan Collmar, and Garrett. Shultz and Badgett won the heats, while Martin won the pursuit.

The Super Cup Stock Car Series visits Midvale Speedway for a 100-lap race this coming Saturday, August 11. The division is made up mostly of older Hooter's Pro Cup and ARCA type cars. During the series' first two races this season in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, 16 cars have started each feature race. Late Models, Pure Stocks, Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Mini-Trucks will also race.

Pit gates will open at 2:00 for the Super Cup Series. Their series' hotlaps will run from 3:00-3:45 and 5:00-5:10. Midvale division hotlaps will be from 3:45-5:00. Qualifying is set to begin at 5:10 with racing at 6:30.
