Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 21, 2012 |
Despite a lower than average car count this past Saturday, July 21, racing action was extremely competitive and exciting throughout the night. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts were on the card in addition to the first visit of the season for the Stock Compacts.
Emerson Huffman and Alex Rosenberry started on the front row of the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature. Roseberry shot into the lead heading into turn one, while Huffman, fighting an ill-handling car, pushed up off of turn two, allowing Bryant Smith to the inside for the second spot. As the race wore on, it became a two car battle out front. Rosenberry was smooth through turns one and two, but struggled slightly coming off of four, as the car pushed high. Smith's car was the fastest on the track during the event as he ran down Rosenberry and applied extreme pressure. Looking low on a couple of occasions, Smith was having a hard time pulling alongside. On lap twelve, Smith had his best run at Rosenberry, driving inside going into turn one. Rosenberry slammed the door shut and Smith dropped two tires in the grass and hit the brakes hard to avoid contact. While it did cost him several car lengths, he again closed on the young Late Model driver. As the race wore on, Rosenberry, despite making only his second career Late Model feature start, drove like a veteran, not making a mistake to open a lane. As the checkered waved, Rosenberry claimed the popular victory in his Rosenberry Towing/Navigate #2. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver were Smith, Rick Sibila, Bubba Smith, and Jonathan Reitter. Mike Miller, Huffman, Larry Baker, Randy Smith, and Jesse Page finished off the top ten. Miller won the fast dash, while Randy Smith won the heat. Sibila set fast time.
New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Lee McCreery took the early lead in the Summit Racing Economy Modified feature. Having a career season, McCreery was setting out for his third feature win in the class. Pressure, though, was coming by way of Kevin McClintock. The Dover, Ohio driver was looking for his first feature win of the season, after a couple of great qualifying efforts and solid runs in a row. On lap nine, McClintock got to the inside going down the frontstretch to take the top position away. Top qualifier, Randy Smart took second soon after. McClintock was unflappable in the lead, though, claiming one of his most dominant career wins. The Federated Auto Parts/Broadrun Cheesehouse #38 was followed by Smart, McCreery, Todd Ripley, and Ryan Tedesco. Others in the top ten were Matthew Mills, Adam Stewart, Bill Burkholder, and Joe Ujcich. McClintock won the dash, while Ujcich won the heat.
Nick Harmon continued to show improvement in the Pure Stock division this past weekend, leading the first eight laps of the 20-lap feature. Just before the crossed flags went into the air signifying halfway, Lee McCreery, filling in for his brother Bill Aubihl, wrestled the top spot away. McCreery held a couple of car length lead, but the win was in doubt until the end with the likes of Don Boron, Jr. and Teddy Oliver closing. Boron spun and Oliver's car faded as McCreery raced to victory. Following the Ace Auto Body/Classic Car Creations #31 across the line in second was point leader Teddy Oliver. Finishing a strong third after breaking an axel in practice was Joe Linard. The Dover, Ohio driver was coming off of hard week of work after his wild flip on the frontstretch the week before. Bill Shimko claimed the fourth spot, while Mike Martin grabbed a top five. Harmon, Boron, Gary Hoopingarner, George Bowers, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. were top ten finishers. Oliver won the dash, while McCreery took the heat.
Donnie Leggett, III was the first of four different leaders during the Compact big track feature. Braden Swaney, the division point leader, took the lead on the second lap, while Kyle Rector raced out front for just a short time on lap four. On lap five, the final lead change occurred when Dennison, Ohio competitor Cliff Cox's Chevrolet Cobalt convincingly claimed the top spot. Cox pulled away down the stretch to a 2.025 second victory. The Dennison Yard/McBride's Hidden Horsepower #37 was followed by Max McCartney, Rector, Tim Farrar, and Swaney. Cox won the dash, while Wes Ennis took the heat.
In the Stock Compact feature on the small oval, Allen Clark led the way for the first six laps before he broke out of his qualifying time and was sent pitside with a speeding ticket. Corey Evey and Chris Bloom inherited the top two spots and raced in a furious battle out front. Evey went up the track twice in a row in turns three and four, and it was on the second mistake that rookie driver Austin Harvey took advantage. Harvey, a regular at Barberton, decided to make his first start at Midvale and it turned out to be a wise decision as he took the lead on lap eleven of the twelve lap race. Following the King Sportsman/King Paint & Body #12 driven by the Barberton, Ohio driver were Bloom, Wes Ennis, Gary Gibson, and Evey who was filling in for point leader Kohlten Bryan who broke a bone in his arm in the preceding days. Tim Frederick won the heat.
The Circle Track Mini Truck Series was on hand for the first of two times this season. In their 20-lap main event, Dennis Garrett, III took the early advantage. A Dennis was also out front on lap four, but this one's last name was Wood. Meanwhile, top qualifier Troy Campbell was caught in traffic deep in the field. By the time he was able to move into the second spot, Wood was long gone and claimed his first career Midvale Speedway win. The Barberton Raceway Park Hobby Stock point leader was followed by Campbell, Garrett, Todd Shultz, and Jerry Gardner. Wood also won the heat in the Justin Badgett truck.
This coming Saturday, July 28, Stewart Flooring night will have the Late Models and Economy Modifieds running 50 lap feature events, racing for a few extra bucks. Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts will also be on hand racing in heats, pursuits, and features.
Pit gates open at 3:00, hotlaps start at 3:30, qualifying is at 5:00, and racing action is at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
