Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 23, 2012 |
Another sizable crowd was treated to an entertaining night of racing as well as autograph night and spectator drags at Midvale Speedway. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts were all in competition.
Drivers were trying to back up an excellent feature from last week, in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division. This week's 30-lap event saw track owner, Randy Smith, race out front on the opening start to lead the first six paces with Mark Willison in tow. Moving through the pack was top qualifier and point leader, Rick Sibila. Sibila, coming off of a win at Barberton on Friday night, was looking for a clean sweep of the weekend. After a lap seven restart, Sibila used the outside lane to shoot into the top spot and put things out of doubt. Behind him racing was competitive and exciting as drivers battle for points and prize money. New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Ron Jaberg, Jr. had his best run of the season by putting his #22 into the second spot. Bubba Smith raced his way into third, while Randy Smith and Jonathan Reitter were top five finishers. The McIntosh Oil Company/Francis Engineering #63 of Sibila was also followed by Rich Dessecker, Larry Baker, Bryant Smith, Jesse Page, and Willison. Reitter and Willison won the heats.
Bill Burkholder led the first lap of the Summit Racing Economy Modified feature before veteran driver Todd Ripley raced out front. Ripley then went into "protect the bottom mode" as he had to also watch his breakout time. After following Ripley for several laps, New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Lee McCreery decided to try out the outside lane. The decision paid off, as McCreery raced into the lead to set the pace. Kevin McClintock and Dave Dobbins moved into the next two spots after a mid-race restart to claim podium finishes. Also following the Double Eagle Tattoos/Karr Automotive were Adam Stewart and Ripley. Others in the top ten included Burkholder, Bill Westlake, Matthew Mills, Randy Smart, and Joe Ujcich. McClintock and Burkholder won the heats, while Dobbins set fast time.
Rob Scott controlled the pace over the first two laps of the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. On lap three, defending two-time champion, Teddy Oliver, wrestled the lead away as he was trying to claim his first feature win of the year. On the move, looking for his second win of the night was Lee McCreery. Filling in for his brother, Bill Aubihl, McCreery went to the outside of Oliver with about eight laps to go. The duo was putting on a great show for the fans as the laps were winding down. With five to go, Oliver's car spun exiting turn four after the two rubbed some paint. Oliver restarted from the tail, while McCreery was about to be challenged by Mike Martin. Martin, who was top qualifier again this week, was looking for his second win in-a-row. Going into turn three after the restart, Martin thought he had cleared purple and orange #31, went to the bottom, and the two made contact. Martin restarted at the tail, while McCreery held on to cross the line in first. Post race inspection, however, changed the finishing order as both McCreery and third place finisher Bill Shimko were both found to have carburetors that did not meet rule specifications. The trophy was then in the hands of second year Pure Stock driver Don Boron, Jr. Boron, who was putting up some solid runs the last couple of weeks, claimed his first career victory in the division in his Malavite Excavating/J&B Feed & Supply #82. The East Sparta, Ohio driver was followed in the official rundown by Vince Martin, Teddy Oliver, Joe Oliver, and Joe Linard. Others in the top ten were Mike Martin, George Bowers, Scott, Tim Lynn, and Dennis Wood. Joe Linard and Teddy Oliver were credited with heat wins.
Cliff Cox wasted little time in taking the lead in the Compact feature on the 3/10-mile oval. Cox, racing for the first time in several weeks, returned after making several changes to the car to conform to this year's new rules. The Dennison, Ohio driver looked to be well on his way to the trophy before a lap eleven caution bunched the field. On the double file restart, Cox picked up the pace early and caution was thrown. After being warned, the front row starters came to green again and Cox hit the go button a little early again and was sent to the tail. That gave the lead to Dan Herron, who was making his first start of the year. Herron raced to the checkered first to claim the victory. However, just as everyone saw in Pure Stock action, post race tech wreaked havoc on the finishing order. Herron was found to be low on frame height as well as another infraction or two, while Cox was dqed for missing tech and Larry Ennis, Jr. was found with an aluminum flywheel. The win was thus claimed by Wes Ennis. Ennis was followed in the official order by Mike Daugherty, Dustin DelVecchio, Braden Swaney, and Joe Fewkes. Ennis and Ryan Shreffler won the heats. Swaney was credited with fast time.
Tim Frederick took the lead on the first lap and never looked back in claiming the 12-lap Stock Compact feature event. Following the Kuester Implement/Buckey Mowing #50 were Chris Bloom, Dan Buckey, Gary Murray, and Kohlten Bryan. Bryan won the heat, while Buckey set fast time.
Kevin Locker claimed his second spectator drag win in-a-row in his four door Oldsmobile.
This coming Saturday, June 30 will see all five divisions in action for the 2012 Mid-Season Championship races. Double points will be dished out in qualifying, heat, and feature action.
Pit gates will open at 3:00, hotlaps start at 3:30, qualifying is at 5:00, and racing will take the green at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
The event leads up to the Tuesday, July 3 Downtown Ford 100 for the Main Event Super Late Models. After an amazing fireworks display a season ago, the same company will be back this year with even a bigger and better show this year. The John Tolloti Memorial Modified 50 will be held in addition to the Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts.
