Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2025 Race Season |
 | May 26, 2012 |
A big night was on tap this past Saturday, May 26 at Midvale Speedway. The 3/10-mile asphalt oval was home to 50-lap feature events for Late Models as well as Modifieds and the night ended with a wild skid plate race. Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts also raced in front of the largest crowd of the year.
20 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models were pitside for the night's festivities. Taking the point at the green was Ed Middaugh, nephew of Midvale Speedway Hall of Famer, Bud Middaugh. The Massillon, Ohio driver returned this season, after a couple of years off and has been running strong. He held the point until veteran Midvale and Main Event racer, Rich Rohrer, made a quick pass in the outside lane after following him for a few laps. Rohrer took over on lap 14 and built up a huge lead during the 29-lap green flag run to start the event. The first caution waved for debris as Bubba Smith's air cleaner cover came off and was rolling along the frontstretch. After the restart, last week's winner, Mark Willison moved into the second spot but had nothing for Rohrer over the next eight laps. However, for Rohrer, that turned out to be a bad thing, as he was handed a speeding ticket for breaking out of his qualifying time twice. The two laps that were his quickest of the race were on 34 and 37. The yellow waved to reset the lineup. The final 13 laps went caution free as Willison was able to fend off challenges from Jimmy Carter and Rick Sibila to claim his second feature win in as many weeks. He claimed the $1,500 top prize over a field that featured some stellar competition from names like Rohrer, Sibila, Carter, Dessecker, Miller, and Smith. At the checkered, the Minerva, Ohio driver was followed by Carter, Sibila, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Jonathan Reitter. Derek Grewell, Dessecker, Bryant Smith, Ed Middaugh, and Larry Baker were top ten finishers. Mike Miller, Middaugh, and Roger Smith won the heats.
Disaster struck on lap one of the Summit Racing Economy Modified feature, as Matthew Mills spun coming off of turn two. The accident collected Adam Stewart, who had his car fly into the air and badly damage the rear half. All drivers were okay, but a couple of the rides were badly damaged. Several more cautions marred the first half of the race, in a division that normally has great racing that is very clean. Bill Burkholder and Greg Hole led the first two laps before 2011 champion, Dave Dobbins took over. Dobbins led by holding off top qualifier, Randy Smart, until a lap 16 restart when Smart made the second groove work. Smart set the pace with a convincing lead until a lap 37 yellow gave Modified star, Doug Meyer, a shot. Meyer, who was turning laps just a little slower than Smart before the yellow, stepped it up a bit after the green came back out, but over the final few paces, Smart pulled back away to claim his second victory in a row and third overall this season. The Kurt Garren, MD/Shook Auto #17 was followed by Meyer, Dobbins, Kevin McClintock, and Justin Courtney. Mike Green, Burkholder, Joe Ujcich, Alex Rosenberry, and Mack Gribble, Jr. were top ten finishers. Courtney and Stewart won the heats, while Smart set quick time.
Joe Linard, Don Boron, Jr., and Joe Oliver were involved in a heated battle early for the Pure Stock 20-lap feature title. Eventually, Oliver controlled the pace for the middle stage of the event and looked destine for victory despite the hungry pack of challengers on his bumper. A green-white-checkered restart with 18 laps complete turned out to be his undoing. While entering turn one on the final lap, Bill Aubihl dove quickly to the inside as the pair went into turn two. Heading down the backstretch, Aubihl pulled into the lead for his second victory of the season. The Classic Car Creations/M&D Design #31 was followed to the stripe by Oliver, Mike Martin, Linard, and George Bowers. Gary Hoopingarner, Boron, Vince Martin, Teddy Oliver, and Josh Flesher were top ten finishers. Linard won the fast heat, while Hoopingarner claimed the second heat and pursuit driving the T.J. Barker machine. Mike Martin was fast qualifier.
Lennie Orr started up front in the Compact 12-lap feature and held off a small but very competitive field of challengers. Orr's scary moment came while seeing the checkered flag wave. As he exited turn four, Wes Ennis, the second place driver, lifted the backend of Orr's car off the ground and pushed him to the line. Orr claimed his first victory of the season, though, his son Jeff has also won a feature in the car this season. The Shook Auto/Pangrazio's Pizza #8 was followed in the official rundown by Braden Swaney, Kyle Rector, Mike Swaney, and Ennis. Ennis set fast time and won the heat, while Orr claimed the pursuit win.
Gary Gibson led the first five laps during the small oval Stock Compact feature before the division's stalwart driver, Blaine Salsberry, claimed the top position. Don't bother looking up stalwart, it means strong, sturdy, etc. You're welcome. Anyhow, Salsberry went on to win yet another feature, making him four-for-four this year. Salsberry was followed across the line by Gibson, Allen Clark, Kohlten Bryan, and Justin Vanfossen. Gibson won the pursuit, while Salsberry was top qualifier and won the heat.
Fans were treated to Midvale Speedway's second ever skid plate race at the end of the night. 15 different drivers lined up in everything from minivans to cars. Justin Courtney and Bubba Smith were among drivers that set the early pace, however, Mike Martin in the Canton Car Connection #5 raced to the front and held on to claim the exciting victory. Sean Fish finished second, while Smith claimed third.
The night was fun from a fan standpoint, as the night had a little bit of everything. Thanks to everyone for putting on a great show. Up next will be the Ohio Template Late Model Series 50 this coming Saturday, June 2. The template Late Models will be making their only 2012 visit. Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts will all race.
Pit gates will open at 3:00, hotlaps at 3:30, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will start at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
