2026 Race Season
Long Awaited Opener In The Books
May 5, 2012
Long Awaited Opener In The BooksAfter two weeks of frigid cold tempers and precipitation, weather was beautiful for Saturday, May 5 at Midvale Speedway. An excellent field of 21 Late Models, 15 Modifieds, and 16 Pure Stocks were pitside. The car counts in the two Compact classes have plenty of room to grow. Opening night cash, trophies, and bragging rights were on the line and drivers were overly eager in some classes to claim them. In all, a large crowd of fans saw a wild night of racing at the newly renovated facility.

Doug McMillen and Bryant Smith started on the front row of the 20-car McIntosh Oil Company Late Model field. The two drivers have clashed in the past and opening night in 2012 would be no different. Not once, not twice, but three times the duo made contact before a grinding crash on the frontstretch eliminated McMillen and damaged Smith's car bad enough to force a pit stop. In all four restarts were needed at the lap two mark. Eventually, the race got back underway with Rich Dessecker and Blake Mackey on the front row. The two drivers were able to cleanly work through turns one and two, and it was Mackey who took the lead via the outside lane. Massillon, Ohio driver Rick Sibila followed him past Dessecker and set his sights on the leader. Over the first half of the 30-lapper, it was a two car breakaway out front with Mackey protecting the bottom and Sibila working the outside. Finally, after a decent sized battle, Sibila was able to pull alongside and take the lead away from Mackey on lap 14. Sibila stretched his advantage over the rest of the field, while Mackey ran comfortably in second with Dessecker, Bubba Smith, and Mike Miller completing the top five. The field ran the final 28 laps without another caution and the top five remained unchanged over the final circuits. Jonathan Reitter, Bryant Smith, Ed Middaugh, Mike McDonald, and Gene Molnar, Jr. were top ten finishers. Sibila was elated to claim the victory after having engine problems a couple of weeks ago at Barberton. Francis Engineering provided the power for the evening's events. The Jaberg family racing team of Dessecker and Miller won the heats and claimed top five feature finishes racing in memory of Ron Jaberg, Sr. who passed away after last year's finale. Derek Grewell won the third heat. Marcus Malcuit set fast time.

A strong field of 14 Summit Racing Economy Modifieds took the green in their 25-lap feature event. Don Leggett, a newcomer to the division, took command to lead the first five laps. On lap six, Kevin McClintock took the lead but a yellow negated his run. It turned out not to matter, though, as McClintock quickly took the lead again on the restart. Randy Smart, who has been very fast at the preseason test and tune sessions, followed him into second. Those two drivers ran first and second until a caution waved with ten laps complete. On the restart, Smart used the high lane to go into the top spot and set a torrid pace. McClintock looked destine for a second place finish before mechanical problems sent him to the infield with three to go. At the checkered, the Adam Myer's Podiatry/Shook Auto #17 crossed the stripe first, followed by 2011 track champion Dave Dobbins. Finishing third was Doug Meyer, who was making his first Modified start at Midvale in some time. Fourth and fifth were taken by two young guns from New Philadelphia High School. Second year competitor Alex Rosenberry took fourth place, while rookie driver and freshman student Matthew Mills claimed fifth. The rest of the top ten were Joe Ujcich, Greg Hole, Don Leggett, Adam Stewart, and Tom Ertle. McClintock and Justin Courtney won the heats, while Dobbins set fast time.

A small invert of five in the Pure Stock division put Bill Shimko and Teddy Oliver on the front row for the 20-lapper. When the green dropped, it was Shimko using the low lane to set the pace with the Oliver brothers, Teddy and Joe following closely. Shimko, relatively inexperienced compared to other frontrunners in the division, looked like an experienced veteran as he protected the top spot from the defending two-time champion, Oliver. The race, which went flag-to-flag despite the solid field of 16 starters, saw Shimko claim his first ever feature victory. The Canton Car Connection/Canton Auto Sales #13 was followed by Teddy Oliver, Joe Oliver, Mike Martin, and Bill Aubihl. Others in the top ten were Joe Linard, Don Boron, Jr., Vince Martin, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Aubihl and Passwaters, Sr. were heat winners. Mike Martin set fast time.

Jeffrey Orr led the first couple of laps in the Compact feature before the quickest car in the class all day and night caught and passed him via the outside lane. Orr gave it a strong try to hang on as long as he could but McCartney's car was just too much. The race, which went caution free, saw McCartney claim the victory by 5.467 seconds. Orr took second behind the South Philly Pizza/Haas Body Shop #5. Braden Swaney, last year's Stock Compact champion finished third after arriving at the speedway late because of a last minute engine change. Colton Cottis was fourth, while Donnie Leggett took fifth. McCartney set fast time and won the heat.

The Stock Compact feature field had a little trouble getting the race started, and in fact put on a five wide display going across the line when they thought they were coming to green, but weren't. They couldn't have done it better if it were scripted. With the nonsense over, the field raced the final ten laps without a caution and saw Blaine Salsberry take advantage of race leader Gary Murray's slip and drove by three wide for the top spot. Salsberry took his philchalmers.com/Dutch Creek Foods #29 to victory lane after setting fast time and finishing second in the heat. Dan Buckey took second in the feature with Kohlten Bryan, Gary Murray, and Gary Gibson top five finishers.

Racing at the 3/10-mile oval will continue this coming Saturday, May 12 with Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Stock Compacts. It will be Twin State Auto Racing Fan Club Night.

Pit gates will open at 2:00, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will start at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
