Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | September 17, 2011 |
The final race of the 2011 racing season was held this past Saturday, September 17 at Midvale Speedway. Late Models were on hand for 25-lap double features, while Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts were part of the regular program. Spectator Drags, a Pure Stock Powder Puff, an officials race, and a trailer race was also on the card. The October 22 program, originally on the schedule, has been canceled so that track personnel can start the construction project to improve the grandstand side of the facility.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models were on hand for the All Star Showdown. Two 25-lap features were run for the 15-car field. In the first segment, Gene Molnar, Jr. and Tom Stankiewicz brought the field to green and it didn't take long for sparks to fly. Heading into the first turn, after Stankiewicz flew into the lead, Molnar tagged the rear bumper and sent him spinning. In the process, Stankiewicz had the left front suspension broken on his car and was done for the night. Also done was point champion Bubba Smith, who went into the pit shute and sustained damage. The restart slated Sibila on the outside lane and by the completion of lap one, he was in the lead with Mike Miller, filling the Rich Dessecker seat and Ron Jaberg, Jr. in second and third. Caution waved moments later, creating a restart up front for Sibila and Miller. With the green back out, Sibila got a little sideways exiting turn two, giving Miller the lead position. Miller and Sibila set sail until a caution with six laps in. On the ensuing restart, it again, was the outside lane moving forward as Sibila retook the top spot and set sail. A couple of cautions later, those two were battling for the lead with Bob Schneider, Jr. and Bryant Smith hot on their heels. Going into turn one, Smith thought about threading the needle and made contact with Miller sending him spinning. All cars were able to continue with Miller getting his spot back and Smith restarting at the tail. The next restart was the key one for Miller, as he again used the outside lane to rocket into the lead with Sibila falling into second. The final restart had Sibila trying the high lane for a while before falling into second. He was then black flagged for fluid coming from his ride. Marcus Malcuit moved into second and followed Miller across the line at the end of the 25-lap marathon. Also following the Route 39 Auto Salvage #21 were Schneider in third, Bryant Smith in fourth, and Jaberg, Jr. in the fifth spot. After the first segment, the top six finishers re-drew for starting spots in the second 25-lap event.
12 of the 15 Late Models lined up for the second 25-lap feature. After the draw at the end of the first race, Jim Ripley and Bob Schneider, Jr. became the front row starters with Mike Miller and Bryant Smith in row two. When the green waved, Ripley's car veered right into the door of Schneider's car. Schneider checked up with Smith having nowhere to go. He made contact with Schneider's rear bumper which sent him down the track and into the right rear quarter panel of Miller's car. Miller slammed the frontstretch wall nose first, ending his chance at a sweep of the features. Miller, Schneider, and William Robinson were done for the night. Once cleanup was over, the field doubled up again with Ripley and Smith starting side-by-side. Smith quickly jumped out front with Marcus Malcuit moving into second. Malcuit closed the gap before the halfway point and applied pressure to the race leader. As the final five laps wound down, though, Smith was able to pull away to pick up his second feature win of the season. The Canton Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #1 was followed by Malcuit who claimed the runner-up spot in both races. Sibila, Jaberg, Jr., and John Sandquist claimed top five finishes. Ripley, Bob Eichel, Foster Mackey, Gene Molnar, Jr., and Miller were in the top ten. Sibila and Stankiewicz won the heats, while Bubba Smith set fast time.
The Summit Racing Economy Modified feature saw two of last week's front runners Tom Garbrandt and Adam Stewart up front for the opening start. Much like one week ago, Garbrandt used a burst of speed and traction coming off of turn two in the high lane to boldly take the lead. Garbrandt, wicked fast during the race's first half, built up over a half straightaway lead, as Stewart led a pack that included Kevin McClintock, Alex Rosenberry, Ryan Tedesco, and Lee McCreery. McClintock kept looking under Stewart but never got the run he needed to pull along side. Meanwhile, Rosenberry moved the outside lane to pass McClintock and was working on Stewart with five to go. As the cars entered turn three, McClintock and Stewart got together, causing the first and only caution of the race. Stewart had to go pitside to fix his bumper, while McClintock went to the tail as well. The restart slated Rosenberry on the highside of Garbrandt. After a couple of laps of side-by-side racing, Rosenberry fell back into the third spot as Tedesco took second. With the white waving, Tedesco was challenging Garbrandt on the high lane but came up short at the line. For Garbrandt, it was his second feature win in a row to end the season, while Tedesco, Rosenberry, McCreery, and McClintock were top five finishers. The DSI Automotive/Trenton Service Tire #30 also claimed the heat win. Tedesco set fast time.
Vince Martin and Don Boron, Jr. led the Pure Stock field to green for their 20-lap event. Martin took command early but top qualifier Chris Mick was on the move. Mick, racing at Midvale for the first time in 2011, was showing his strength in the outside lane but it took several laps before he was able to take sole possession of the top spot. After he did, he started to build up a sizable lead as Joe Linard was battling Martin for second. Linard took the runner-up spot with three laps to go, but came up a half straightaway short in the end. For Mick, it was his first win of the year, while Linard, Martin, Corey Evey, and Don Boron, Jr. completed the top five. Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bill Shimko, Josh Flesher, Shawn Kaufman, and George Bowers were in the top ten in the race that went flag-to-flag without a caution. Mick and Flesher won the heats.
The Outlaw Compact 12-lap feature had Braden Swaney, the Stock Compact champ, and Larry Ennis bringing the field to green. Ennis and Swaney were locked in a great side-by-side battle at the front of the field when caution waved for John McNutt and Mike Swaney who got locked up in the infield. The restart put Ennis on the pole and slated Kyle Grove in the fifth restarting position. When the green lights were turned back on, Grove, as he has done all season, hit the go button and drove through the field to the front. At the checkered, the J.D. Byrider/CNAC Financing #3 was followed by Jake Albright, John McNutt, Jesse Page, and Braden Swaney. Grove was top qualifier and won the heat.
Ryan Shreffler and Kohlten Bryan were front row starters in the 12-lap Stock Compact feature and it was Shreffler who held the early lead. After the completion of lap one, Tim Frederick raced to the outside lane and started a lead position battle. As Shreffler was holding off Frederick, Bryan and Lennie Orr got together in turn four with both going up into the wall. Both drivers were able to continue. During the first caution, Ryan Shreffler was sent pitside for going under his time during the early laps. With the field back to racing, Frederick was leading with Blaine Salsberry close behind. Closing on the halfway mark, Salsberry got a run to the inside of Frederick on the frontstretch and led the field by the time he was in turn two. For Salsberry's Keeping You In Stitches #29, it was his first feature win of the season, while Frederick, Orr, Dan Buckey, and Tom Barrett were top five finishers. Buckey and Shreffler won the heats, while Clayton Oliver set fast time.
After the regular division racing was over, the Pure Stock Powder Puff was held. Four cars lined up for the event with Linda Morgan taking the early lead. Her sister-in-law Sue Smith claimed the second spot and followed her, several car lengths behind. With the white flag out, Smith drove to the inside of Morgan in turn two for the lead. As the cars raced down the backstretch the rubbed some paint as they passed Monica Martin, a lap car. Morgan, not wanting to give up the lead, turned into the left rear quarter panel of Smith's car, sending her spinning heading into turn three. Caution waved, with Smith restarting on the pole and Morgan restarting in fourth. The final lap had Smith crossing the line with the victory and Morgan taking second. Monica Martin was third with Michelle Boron in fourth.
The officials race was up next with six cars lining up for the green. Jason Anthony, driving Kyle Grove's car, made quick work of the field, just as Grove has done for much of the season. Anthony started in the final position and was in the lead by lap two. Finishing in the top five of the behind waxing were Terry Colletti, Chris Kail, Dave Hoopingarner, and Dave Conrad.
The final Figure 8 race of the year had a season high six cars start Formula 1 style on the frontstretch. Lennie Orr, quickly raced into the lead with Ryan Shreffler and Dan Buckey taking the second and third spots. Much to the fans delight, they got to see a collision at the intersection as Derek Grewell collected the second place car of Shreffler. At the checkered, Orr claimed the victory with Don Boron close behind. Dan Buckey claimed the third spot.
The final event of the night was the much anticipated 12-lap Trailer Race. Bryant Smith and Teddy Oliver were the first two starters in the ten event field. With seven laps to go, five of the remaining six contenders got piled up on the backstretch. Oliver pulled away from the scene and looked like he was going to claim the win. Moments later, however, Jason Morgan got his ride restarted and pulled away as well. That left Oliver coming across the line with the halfway signal in the air. With five to go, Oliver's ride done broke coming off of turn four and Morgan drove by to the highside. Only problem for Morgan was that he was down a lap or two so he had to go around a couple of circuits by himself just to take the lead. Once it was determined that no one else was going to get moving again, the double checkered waved for the final time on the season and Morgan claimed his first trailer race victory. Teddy Oliver, Don Boron, Bryant Smith, and Randy Smith finished off the top five.
The Spectator Drag championship winner was Kevin Renicker over Kyle Finlayson.
