Champions Determined On Final Point NightAn exciting 2011 racing season at Midvale Speedway is in its waning stages as the Season Championship event was held this past Saturday, September 10. The five weekly divisions raced for double points and only two of the five divisions had their titles determined coming into the night.

Bubba Smith, by way of extreme consistency, good qualifying, and outstanding feature finishes all season, had the point championship locked up coming into the night. However, drivers were hungry for the season championship bragging rights during the 25-lap feature. Gene Molnar, Jr. and Derek Grewell brought the field to green with Grewell going out front first. However, coming to complete the second lap, Grewell slid sideways coming out of four, had a wrestling match with the steering wheel, and eventually spun toward the infield. Drivers were able to avoid him, however, Bob Schneider, Jr. took out a yuke on the infield. When the green waved again, Rick Sibila was the leader with Bryant Smith moving into second. On a double file restart, Smith lagged back trying to get a run on Sibila in turn four. As he hit the go pedal, his rear tires spun, causing his car to go down and slam the side of Rich Dessecker’s #21. A couple of other cars piled in causing a red flag for track cleanup. That put Molnar and Mike Miller back up with Sibila for the next couple of restarts. When Miller was on the outside, he ran with Sibila for a couple of laps. Then, after he dropped into line and Bubba Smith got by, Don Harvey, Jr. was attempting a pass on the outside lane. As Harvey was about to clear him going into turn one, Miller’s car looked as if something binded up or the geometry changed, as it bottomed out and pushed up into the side of Harvey’s car, causing a spin. Harvey resumed in his position of third, while Miller dropped to the back where he battled it to the finish. At this point, the race was closing on the halfway mark and Bubba Smith was the new second place restarter. As the green dropped, Sibila pulled out front, while Smith challenged heavy working for a way around. As the cars were just past the five to go signal, Smith looked as if he was going to take sole possession of the lead going into three. Just to make sure he didn’t close the door too early on Sibila, Smith stayed in the high lane going into the corner, got a little out of the groove and the car whipped around in an instant. Smith was able to keep it off the wall, but the caution cost him a possible clean sweep of the point and season championship trophies. The final restart slated Harvey alongside Sibila and fans were in for some of the closest Late Model racing possible. Over the final four circuits, the two drivers turned one identicial lap and three others that were very close to being the same. Each time at the line was basicially a photo finish. At the checkered, Sibila claimed the victory by just fifteen thousandths of a second. Harvey finished the close second, while Bryant Smith made a nice rally for third. Jonathan Reitter was top qualifier and came across the line in fourth, while Dessecker brought home another top five. Bubba Smith, Miller, Grewell, Molnar, and Schneider were top ten finishers. Miller and Sibila won the heats.

The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds have been outstanding in their first season back racing at the track. The season championship race didn’t disappoint either. Polesitter Adam Stewart, looking for his first Modified feature win, led early in the 20-lap grind. Veteran driver Tom Garbrandt took second moments later and began hounding the leader almost instantly. As the two ran nose-to-tail, Garbrandt was glued to the rear bumper. At one point early, some contact dislodged one side of Stewart’s rear bumper as it was pointing into the air. A caution on lap 15 put Garbrandt on the highside of Stewart for a restart. As the two drove into turn two, Stewart came off the bottom just enough to open the door for a three wide move by Kevin McClintock. McClintock drove into the first position, while Stewart and Garbrandt battled for second. A caution waved moments later. It was under this caution that Stewart’s good run came to an end as he was sent pitside to fix his bumper because it had changed position and was rubbing the track. The cars eventually were ready for a final four lap shootout, and much like the Late Model race, the top two ran side-by-side in a great battle. On the inside it was McClintock and on the outside was Garbrandt. McClintock led the first lap back to the line but on the final three circuits it was Garbrandt assuming the lead and on his way to his first Modified feature win. The Trenton Service Tire/DSI Automotive #30 was followed by McClintock, Dave Dobbins, Alex Rosenberry, and Bill Burkholder who had his best run of the year. Scott Archer, Stewart, Mark Willison, Jr., Justin Courtney, and Greg Hole were top ten finishers. Willison and Stewart won the heats, while Archer set fast time. The great point battle between Dobbins and Archer was tight right down the final laps. Dobbins had a nine point advantage entering the race, and by way of finishing three positions better, picked up the championship by 21 markers. It was his first career championship.

Brian Minard and Corey Evey raced out front in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature event. Meanwhile, fans were keeping their eyes on Mike Martin and Teddy Oliver. Oliver had a 20 point lead going into the race so he needed to finish within four positions of Martin to claim his second championship in a row. On a lap six restart, things shuffled at the front. Evey had a good restart on the outside lane and tried to close the door on Minard going into the first turn. However, he hadn’t quite cleared him and contact ensued. Minard got his spot back and it slated Martin alongside. When the green again waved, Minard had another lackluster restart and Martin was able to clear him going into the first turn. That really applied the pressure to Oliver, who had been sent pitside to fix a fuel leak. At that point of the race, Martin was ahead in the point battle. Things started to go back in Oliver’s favor as he was working back forward. However, there was one more chink in the armor as Oliver made contact with Minard and was forced to the back again. As the laps wound down, Martin lost a couple of spots as Joe Linard assumed the point out front. Oliver also picked up a couple of positions to help solidify his championship. As the checkered was thrown, Linard held off the hard charging Bill Aubihl to claim the feature win. The Buckey Mowing/Todd Miller Excavating #77 was also followed by Martin, Evey, and Oliver in the top five. Minard, Tom Early, Don Boron, Jr., TJ Barker, and George Bowers were top ten finishers. Linard and Minard won the heats, while Aubihl set fast time.

Kyle Grove had the Outlaw Compact point championship wrapped up entering the championship night. However, he had some strong competition for the races as John McNutt was back behind the wheel of the Cliff Cox owned #37. In the heat, the two raced to the front quickly with McNutt claiming the win. In the feature, McNutt drove to the third lane and shot into the front of the pack. For Grove, it took six laps to move into the second spot and McNutt had already built up a sizable lead. The two wicked fast race cars finished with a little over three seconds between them but about half a track ahead of the rest of the field. For McNutt, it was his fifth win of the year. The Dennison Yard/McBride’s Hidden Horsepower #37 was followed by Grove, Jake Albright, Wes Ennis, and Jesse Page. Albright and Page came into the feature race tied for second in points and Albright claimed it with his solid run. McNutt set a track record with a 17.120 and won the fast heat. Larry Ennis won the second heat.

Allen Clark led the first four laps in the Stock Compact feature before Clayton Oliver squeezed by for the top spot. Oliver turned some solid laps as the race stayed green and was building up a huge lead. Meanwhile, point leader Braden Swaney, who had clinched the championship by starting the race, was moving his way through the pack. Swaney took second on lap ten but was behind by too much to run down Oliver. At the checkered, the Vegas Nights/Everhart Glass #6 claimed the win, while Swaney, Clark, Dan Buckey, and Blaine Salsberry were in the top five. Tim Frederick, Kohlten Bryan, Billy Weaver, Gary Murray, and Lennie Orr were in the top ten. Frederick and Clark won the heats while Swaney set fast time.

Despite the point battles being over, one more week of racing looms. This coming Saturday, September 17 is the 2011 Fall Classic. The Late Models will be running a double header feature, much like last season where Ryan Tedesco won the first half of the event and Bryant Smith claimed the second half. Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts will also be on hand.

The much awaited Trailer Race will be held to finish off the program Saturday, and send the drivers into the offseason with a bang.

Another event on the program is the Spectator Drag Championship race for all Spectator drag winners this season. There were eight events held, and those eight winners are eligible to compete against one another this Saturday.

Pit gates open at 2:00, hotlaps are at 3:00, qualifying is at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30.
