Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 27, 2011 |
One of the most exciting nights of racing this season took place this past Saturday, August 27 at Midvale Speedway. The five regular divisions were on hand as well as spectator drags and the McDonald's classic car show cruise in. Fans were treated to $1 hotdogs and $1 pops in the concession stands all night long.
Bryant Smith and Rich Dessecker brought a solid field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models to the green for their 25 lap event. Smith, via the pole, went into the lead and was trying to turn around his atrocious night. In hotlaps, the brakes came apart and in a separate incident Rick Sibila clipped him while he was stopped on the track. In the heat race an axle came out. While he did lead the first couple of laps, third place starter Bob Schneider, Jr. was hot on his heels. As Smith and Dessecker exited turn two on lap three, Schneider saw an opening to the bottom and made it three wide for the lead pass. Racing throughout the pack was exciting, as Blake Mackey, Bubba Smith, and Don Harvey, Jr. were on their way through the pack. The seventh, eighth, and tenth place starters, respectively were up to second, third, and fourth by lap ten. Over the final 15 circuits, the battle between those three kept fans entertained while Schneider was able to build up a decent lead. Smith eventually took second but ran out of time while trying to catch the leader. Mackey held off Harvey, who was racing in Midvale Late Model class for the first time in a number of seasons. The race saw only one caution flag and that fell on lap six. The final 19 laps went to the checkered. Following the McBride's Auto/Swan Fabrication #17 of Schneider to his first career feature win were Smith, Mackey, Harvey, and Willison. Dessecker, Jonathan Reitter, Ryan Tedesco, Derek Grewell, and John Sandquist were top ten finishers. All but two of the starters made it to the finish. Willison and Tedesco won the heats, while Harvey set fast time.
The race of the night and, arguably, the season was in the 20-lap Summit Racing Economy Modified feature. Point leader, Dave Dobbins, driving a borrowed Joe Ujcich car after blowing his engine in hotlaps and Bill Burkholder started up front in the event. Dobbins led the first circuit but veteran Tom Garbrandt was hungry for a victory and shot by on lap two. During the first half of the race, the lead pack that included Garbrandt, Adam Stewart, Kevin McClintock, and Burkholder ran nose-to-tail. As they did, top qualifier Ryan Tedesco was moving through the pack and closing in. As Tedesco started moving past the lead cars via the outside lane, a change took place out front as Stewart moved by Garbrandt on lap 13. Tedesco followed him into the second spot and on lap 16 found himself out front and on his way to his first feature win of the season. Following the Dr. Kurt Garren/Alpha Heating & Cooling #18 were Stewart who has now thrown his name into the hat of possible upcoming winners, Alex Rosenberry who made a late race charge, Garbrandt, and McClintock. Others in the top ten were Scott Archer, Burkholder, Mark Willison, Jr., Dobbins, and Greg Hole. The race went caution free and saw a number of guys in contention for the win. Garbrandt and Dobbins won the heats.
Pat Dalton and Corey Evey brought the feature field of Pure Stocks to the green with Evey jumping out front. Evey led the first six laps as jostling was going on behind him. On lap seven, point runner-up Teddy Oliver found himself out front after passing Evey for the lead. Just before a lap 11 caution, Joe Linard took second away from Evey. On the double file restart, Linard proved to be tough on the highside as he raced out front. Caution again waved on lap 18 to set up another restart between Linard and Oliver. As the cars exited four coming to the white flag, the two bumped tires and Oliver's car shot into the outside retaining wall. After cleanup took place on the track and the small catfight was cleared in front of the grandstands, Brian Minard and Don Boron, Jr. restarted up front. Minard raced to the checkered, moments later, and claimed his third feature win of the season. The Deals on Wheels/C&M Auto #51 was followed by Boron, Bill Shimko, Linard, and Evey. The rest of the top ten were Josh Flesher, Mike Martin, Oliver, Dalton, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. Minard and Shimko won the heats.
The Outlaw Compact feature was an interesting one as division frontrunner, Kyle Grove, had some tough competition by way of veteran John McNutt. McNutt won the first three features of the season, driving his own car, while Grove had claimed nine others. Jake Albright won one feature this season by way of a dq when Grove forgot to stop at the tech line. This week it was McNutt driving the Cliff Cox #37 that was newly built a little over a month ago. In qualifying, it was McNutt setting fast time with a new track record, breaking Groves by about a tenth. McNutt claimed the fast heat win over Grove. Then it was feature time with both starting at the back of the eight car field. Most thought that whoever got to the front first was going to be tough to beat. As the first three rows ran double wide, McNutt stepped it out into the third lane and started working around the other competitors two at a time. Grove wasted little time in doing the same exact thing. When McNutt got out front, he had a several car length lead but Grove made it a race and closed the gap for a lead battle. As the last few laps wore down, McNutt protected the bottom with Grove right on his bumper waiting for a mistake. As the checkered waved, it was McNutt claiming his fourth feature win of the year by a very small margin. Grove, Max McCartney, Jesse Page, and Wes Ennis were top five finishers. Jake Albright, Mike Gribble, and Tye Kelly all finished the race as well.
The roughest race of the night came in a division that normally runs pretty clean races, the Stock Compacts. As soon as the green came out, cars went four wide in two different rows going down the backstretch. Exiting turn four, Derek Johns found himself a little too high and slammed the outside retaining wall. As his car came to rest, the driver was clearly knocked for a loop and found himself in some pain in the car. All precautions were taken as the New Philadelphia and Midvale Fire Departments arrived on the scene to cut the roof off for the Smith Ambulance personnel to remove him safely. He was taken to an area hospital where he was found to have a slight concussion but was released late at night. Once the accident scene was cleared, the field went back to green and did complete just a lap before the next caution waved. A few more restarts and subsequent yellows waved before a second lap was ever completed. Finally, the field did run a ten lap green flag session that saw Kohlten Bryan lead for a few laps before Jeffrey Orr found himself out front for a third week in a row. On lap eleven, the final caution waved and set up a four lap shootout. At the checkered, Orr held off Colton Cottis, Braden Swaney, Bryan, and Allen Clark. Top ten finishers were Ryan Shreffler, Gary Gibson, Blaine Salsberry, Rich Dunlap, and Dan Buckey. Tim Frederick and Charles Storesina were heat winners. Blaine Salsberry claimed top time.
All in all, it was one of the most exciting nights of racing this season. The Late Model and Modified drivers ran great races that saw just one combined caution. It was the right amount of give and take that fans have been looking for all season. It also gives drivers and teams a week of less work in the garage.
Another exciting night is on tap for this coming Saturday, September 3 as the Main Event Racing Series Super Late Models will be running in the J.D. Byrider 75. The Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts are also on the car. As a special addition, the first ever Midvale Skid Plate race will be held. The event features front wheel drive cars that have skis instead of back tires. The entries are already in the double figure range. It should be thrilling.
Pit gates open Saturday at 1:30 with grandstands at 2:30. MERS hotlaps will be from 2:30-3:00 and 3:30-4:00. Midvale division hotlaps are from 3:00-3:30 and 4:00-4:30. An MERS scuff session will run from 4:30-4:40. Qualifying will start at 4:40 and racing will see the green at 6:30.
Grandstand admission is $18 for adults and seniors and $10 for kids 6-15. Children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 for members and $35 for non-members.
