Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 20, 2011 |
It was another wild night of racing action this past Saturday night, August 20 at Midvale Speedway. In the Late Models, no one wanted to win, the Modifieds had a driver return to claim victory, the Pure Stocks had some drama in the tech line, the Outlaw Compacts saw domination continue, and the Stock Compacts had a driver go back-to-back.
In the Summit Racing Economy Modified division, Tom Garbrandt and Ron McBride led the field to Chuck Barrett's green flag. Garbrandt, who looked good in the pursuit race, was trying to claim his second win of the night, but more importantly, his first feature win of the year. The Uhrichsville, Ohio driver took command early, leading the field for the first 14 laps while Alex Rosenberry and McBride handed second spot back and forth. On lap 15, caution waved for the first and only time, as McBride and Willison got together going into turn three. Willison restarted at the tail, while McBride restarted third. With six to go, the green again waved over the field. As Garbrandt and Rosenberry entered turn one side-by-side, the cars went up the banking, creating some contact. McBride drove quickly to the inside and completed a three wide pass for the lead and eventually, the victory. For the Dover, Ohio driver, it was a great way to come out of a brief retirement, after selling his cars a couple of years ago. Following the Dutch Valley Market/Dr. Kurt Garren #18 were Rosenberry, Dave Dobbins, Scott Archer, and Rick Elkins, Jr., who drove the Adam Stewart car. Garbrandt settled in sixth, Bill Burkholder seventh, while Willison, Lee McCreery, and Doug Higgins were top ten finishers. McBride and McCreery won the heat races, while Archer set fast time.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature was a wild one that saw a rotating field throughout the race. In all, there were four different leaders as the front was not the place to be. Second year Late Model driver Derek Grewell led early on with Joel McKnight and Rick Sibila following closely. Caution number one came out on lap 5 for Blake Mackey, who spun into the infield coming off of turn two. The field realigned double file, as all restarts are, and after a couple of failed tries, the field got back rolling again and went caution free until lap ten when Sibila and Grewell got together going into turn one. Sibila was sent pitside, while Grewell restarted at the tail after getting out of his car to survey the damage. That put Rich Dessecker and McKnight in the top two spots. When the green came out, Dessecker drove out front, while McKnight was overtaken for second by Mackey, who had worked his way from the back from the earlier spin. After running nose-to-tail for a couple of laps, Mackey drove hard into turn three and made contact with Dessecker, causing the spin. Mackey was relegated to the tail for the second time, while Dessecker kept the lead. That put top qualifier, Bubba Smith, back on the outside of the front row. As the green again waved on the tired arm of the flagman, Desseker and Smith went into turn one side-by-side. As the cars exited two, Smith pulled ahead by a nose but got slightly sideways creating some contact with Dessecker, who spun into the infield. Smith was sent to the tail, while Dessecker had some damage and was unable to continue. McKnight inherited the lead and Bob Eichel became the second place car. On the next restart, McKnight pulled out front and built up a fairly comfortable lead. The veteran Main Event racer led from 13-17, before the rearend let go going into turn three, causing the final yellow. The final restart was led by Grewell and Smith, with the latter getting back out front. Grewell got sideways moments later and Mackey moved back into second. Grewell held on for a solid third, while Jonathan Reitter came across the line in his "cutaway" car with a fourth place run, and Animal Eichel finished fifth. William Robinson, McKnight, John Sandquist, Dessecker, and Dave McAlicker finished sixth through tenth. For Smith, it was his fourth win of the year in the Smith's Auto Sales/Finish Line Motors #12. Dessecker won the fast heat, while Grewell claimed the second heat and pursuit.
Corey Evey led the first couple of laps in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature before Teddy Oliver raced to the front of the pack. Moments later, Evey received some contact from fellow rookie Don Boron, Jr. in turn two, sending the runner-up spinning. When the race eventually got back underway, Oliver was under attack from top qualifier, Bill Aubihl. After a lap 10 restart, Aubihl got a run underneath Oliver going down the backstretch. Oliver tried to close the door, but it was a little late and the six time feature winner had to restart at the tail. Down the stretch of the final ten circuits, Aubihl held off division frontrunners Mike Martin, Joe Linard, and Oliver for the victory. Evey, TJ Barker, Tom Earley, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Phil Bunton, Jr., and Pat Dalton finished in the top ten. Aubihl and Barker claimed heat wins, while Oliver took the pursuit.
Larry Ennis led the first four laps of the Outlaw Compact feature before division standout, Kyle Grove overtook him on the highside. On this night, it was a small field of cars and it took Grove no time to make quick work of the competitors. His closest competition on the night came in the form of his older brother Tad, who was driving Mike Swaney's car. Down the stretch, Tad was able to moved into second but didn't have anything for Kyle at the end. The brothers' Grove were followed by Ennis, Jesse Page, and Tye Kelly. Kyle Grove took the heat and Jake Albright won the pursuit.
Second year driver Colton Cottis led the first twelve laps of the Stock Compact feature and looked to be on his way to victory number three this year. However, after a several lap battle, Jeffrey Orr intercepted the top spot and cruised for the final two laps for his second straight victory. Cottis claimed second, while Dan Buckey, Braden Swaney, and Tim Frederick were top five cars. Blaine Salsberry, Rich Dunlap, Allen Clark, Kohlten Bryan, and Derek Johns finished out the top ten. Swaney won the heat and pursuit after repairs were made to his car during the past week. Cottis claimed the second heat win. Orr was credited with top time.
Most of the drama this week came from the tech area. During post-race inspection of the Modifieds and Pure Stocks, one of Midvale Speedway's part-time tech guys found questionable air bleeders on a few of the top finishing carburetors. While the carbs did fit the go/no-go gauge properly, the air bleeders are not technically okay for those two classes.
The problem lies within the fact that those carbs were all deemed okay during the course of the season by the weekly tech team so the drivers in question were unaware that there was anything wrong. Due to this misunderstanding by the officials, those drivers were not disqualified and were credited with their finishes.
It should be noted that carburetors with the aforementioned air bleeders are not allowed from this point on. Anyone in the Economy Modified and Pure Stock divisions found with them will be disqualified. In hopes of not having this type of situation in the future, Midvale Speedway will try to have the same officials there on a weekly basis so mix-ups are less likely.
This Saturday, August 27 will feature racing in the Late Model, Economy Modified, Pure Stock, Outlaw Compact, and Stock Compact divisions. It will be $1 dog/$1 pop night in the concession stands so come hungry and thirsty. Spectator drags are also scheduled.
Then next Saturday, September 3, the Main Event Racing Series will be coming into town for their final tune-up before the Main Event in Columbus. They will be running a 75-lap race with Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Midvale Speedway's first ever skid plate race.
Pit gates on August 27 will open at 2:00, hotlaps start at 3:00, qualifying is at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pits are $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
