Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 13, 2011 |
The Super Cup Stock Car Series made its first ever visit to Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, August 13. Fans were also treated to racing in the Late Model, Pure Stock, Outlaw Compact, and Stock Compact divisions. Powder Puff racing was held at the end of the night.
The Super Cup Stock Car Series's drivers were competing in their fifth event of the year, but their first ever at Midvale Speedway. The division, comprised mostly of cars that were in the NASCAR Grand National or Pro Cup classes, was very competitive with a number of drivers leading and having a chance at victory. When the green waved, it was point leader and 2010 champion, Jody Harrison, coming from his second row starting spot to take the lead, via a three wide move on the first lap. One would think that Harrison would run away from the field, since he was the top qualifier. That was not the case, however, as Harrison gave up the top spot on lap twelve, as the only Ohio driver in the field, Rob Jones sailed out front. Jones was at the point for the next 27 laps before Harrison took his second turn out front. This time, it lasted just two laps, as Jones never let Harrison clear him and eventually pulled back ahead. The next lead change took place on lap 52, as Kevin Kromer became the top dog. The Walnutport, PA driver ran a good lane the last half of the race to fend off challenges from other strong contenders to pick up his first career Stock Car Super Cup victory. Kromer became the fifth different winner in five races this season for the division. Following the Kromer Plumbing, Heating, & Air #77 were JJ Pack who had a great car late in the race, Brian Harrison, Harvey Harrison, and Brent Nelson. Tim Richardson, Grant Andrews, Jr., Lou Ansel, Jason Roberts, and Brandon Harrison were top ten finishers.
Rich Dessecker and Bryant Smith brought the McIntosh Oil Company Late Models to the green for their 25-lap feature. Smith, the fifth fast qualifier from the afternoon, had the advantage across the stripe at the completion of lap one. The turned out to be very important, as caution waved moments later when Doug McMillen's car spun in turn one. The restart slated Smith on the pole with Dessecker outside. When the green again waved, Smith darted into the lead with Bob Schneider, Jr. following him into second. Yellow waved for a second and final time in the race on lap four, for a Jonathan Reitter and Blake Mackey mishap that started going into turn one. While the duo was running side-by-side, Reitter slid sideways up the banking and into the side of Mackey's car. While recovering, Doug McMillen, Bob Eichel, and William Robinson were caught up in the aftermath. The cars of Eichel and Robinson required tow trucks, while McMillen returned only to go back to the pits moments later. The field went the final 22 laps without a caution as Bryant Smith, Bubba Smith, Schneider, Mackey, and Dessecker ran in the top five. By the end, the field was strung out all the way around the track with the younger of the Smith Brothers taking the victory, his first of the season. Following the Smith's Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #1 were Bubba Smith, Schneider, Mackey, and Dessecker. Others in the top ten were Derek Grewell, who was running much better than in recent weeks, Joel McKnight, Reitter, McMillen, and Eichel. Dessecker and Grewell won the heats, while Bubba Smith set fast time.
In the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division, the smallest invert of the season put the top three qualifiers up front. Polesitter Joe Linard led the first lap, while second place starter Teddy Oliver took over on lap two. Moments later, top qualifier Mike Martin moved into the second spot. That left the top two point contenders to battle it out over the final 18 laps of the race. While there was only a couple of cautions during the event, one turned out to change the dynamics of the race. It was on lap four when Luther Chambers scattered an engine going into the first turn. Despite the cleanup crews best effort, it made for slick conditions in the first turn for the rest of the race. As the laps wore down in the event, Martin stayed glued to the rear bumper of Oliver. On the final circuit, Martin dropped to the inside coming off of turn two. Going into three, the two wrestled for real estate, rubbing some paint. Both cars slid sideways with Martin having two tires on the grass trying to steer clear of the #49. As the duo raced across the line, Oliver took the victory with Martin coming away with a close second. The PhilChalmers.com/Oliver's Garage #49 was followed by Martin, Brian Minard, Don Boron, Jr., and Bill Shimko. The rest of the top ten was Pat Dalton, Rob Scott, Bud Soehnlen, Joe Linard, and Bill Aubihl. Aubihl and Dalton claimed the heat wins.
Mike Swaney raced out front early in the Outlaw Compact feature, while the fast cars were trying to work their way to the front with some exciting racing behind him. For top qualifier, Kyle Grove, it didn't take long. The point leader moved into second on lap three and by lap six, found himself out front. Back in the field, Kyle Rector and John McNutt in the Cliff Cox car were also making progress. McNutt tried to thread the needle heading into turn three with six laps to go but just didn't quiet have the Max McCartney ride cleared. The two made contact, which left the rear bumper cover laying on the track and resulted in a caution. McNutt was sent to the tail and, once back to green, put on a driving display getting all the way back to the second spot before the checkered. At the finish, win #8 this season was claimed by Grove, while McNutt, Swaney, Jesse Page, and Jake Albright claimed top fives. Larry Ennis, Blaine Salsberry, Adam Mishler, Tye Kelly, and Chris Smith had top tens. McNutt and Ennis claimed the heat wins. In a random draw done in victory lane, the 3rd place finisher Mike Swaney picked up an additional $100 courtesy of Arch-a-Motive of Canton, Ohio.
The biggest field of Stock Compacts this season culminated for the 15-lap feature. The race turned out to be a good one, as Derek Johns raced into the early lead. Fellow rookie Kohlten Bryan passed him on the second lap to go out front and held that position for the next five laps before one of the fastest in the field, Jeffrey Orr took over. Orr claimed the lead right before a yellow and was able to keep the spot convincingly over the last nine laps. Tim Frederick slid past Dan Buckey on the final circuit for second, while Buckey was followed by top qualifier Tom Barrett and Ryan Shreffler. Charles Storesina, Bryan, Colton Cottis, Allen Clark, and Tate Ricker were top ten finishers. Point leader, Braden Swaney got caught up in a mishap after a yellow and his car was severely damaged, while the driver was okay. Orr and Bryan won the heats.
Angie Tucke claimed the Pure Stock powder puff event in the Brian Minard #51, while Jodee Dunlap won the Compact powder puff in the Dan Buckey #50.
