Whipkey Wins LM Race; Dobbins In MODs
July 9, 2011
Whipkey Wins LM Race; Dobbins In MODsA scorching hot day provided for a slick and slightly slower racetrack this past Saturday, July 9 at Midvale Speedway. The Late Model division returned to action along with Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts.

In the track’s premier division, 16 McIntosh Oil Company Late Models took the green from chief starter, Terry Colletti. Polesitter Emerson Huffman raced into the lead from his pole starting spot, while Gary Whipkey stayed on the lowside to move under Ron Jaberg, Jr. for second. Once the first lap was completed, the drivers ran for 17 laps without a caution, as Huffman was followed by racing veterans Whipkey, Rich Dessecker, and Bob Schneider, Jr. Caution on the 17th circuit came out for a spinning Rich Marcum, who wasn’t able to get checked up for the chain reaction check-up in front of him. The field was realigned moments later, putting Huffman on the pole and Whipkey on the outside for the restart. When the green dropped, Huffman raced back into the lead without a problem, and looked to be on his way to victory. Seconds later, though, a caution again waved, as Schneider and Jonathan Reitter got together in a battle for fourth. As the green waved on the next restart, Huffman’s powerful #90 spun the rear tires and Whipkey shot into the number one spot on the frontstretch. Huffman was able to regain control to fend off Dessecker for second. As the laps wore down, Huffman applied pressure trying to take the lead back away, but his effort ran out of time and Whipkey claimed the victory. Following Whipkey in the Downtown Ford/Theo’s Fender Pullers #7 were Huffman, Dessecker, Marcus Malcuit, and Doug McMillen. Others in the top ten behind the Doylestown, Ohio driver were Bubba Smith, Schneider, Derek Grewell, Bryant Smith, and Reitter. Dessecker and Grewell won the heats, while Marcum set fast time. After the pretty clean race, tempers flared between a number of frustrated drivers including Marcum, Smith, Schneider, Reitter, and McMillen for mishaps that took place mid-pack. None of the aformentioned took each other to the Midvale concession stand for a post-race snack.

Much like the Late Models, the Summit Racing Economy Modifieds put on a pretty smooth show that only saw yellow flags after lap 16. The invert for the event was a small one, putting the top four qualifiers at the front of the field. Polesitter Randy Smart and point leader Dave Dobbins raced to the green with Dobbins using the outside lane to gain the advantage after a couple of laps. Smart hung on to the runner-up spot until the lap 17 caution put him in the outside lane for the restart. When the green dropped for the final four lap shootout, Smart fell back to third as another division front-runner, Scott Archer moved into second. As the final paces clicked off, Hartville, Ohio’s Dave Dobbins stayed out front to claim his third feature win of the season. Following the Wagner Fabrication/R&R Carb #53 were Archer, Smart, Kevin McClintock, and Tom Garbrandt. Mark Willison, Jr., Adam Stewart, Lee McCreery, Joe Ujcich, and Alex Rosenberry were the rest of the top ten. Garbrandt and Stewart won the heats, while Archer set fast time.

The Midvale Pure Stock feature was a frazzen fiasco. On the opening start, Bob Passwaters, Jr. got sideways on the frontstretch, collecting his dad’s car as well. Moments later, point leader Vince Martin, while trying to check up for the caution got slammed into the wall on the backstretch and then collected the car of Teddy Oliver. The Passwater cars and the one of Martin’s were done for the night, while Oliver continued with heavy damage. On the second try to get the race started, polesitter Noah Osborne and Ronald Bunton got hooked up in front of the field creating a crash, super speedway style. Oliver, Luther Chambers, and Rich Dunlap were also collected. After the graveyard of cars was cleared in turn one, only seven cars were left for the restart out of the original 16. From that point on, the race was caution free as Joe Oliver led the field in the Brian Minard car. As the checkered waved, Oliver crossed the line as winner, while Bill Aubihl, Teddy Oliver, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Don Boron, Jr. followed. In post race inspection, Joe Oliver’s car was found to be too light, while Bunton’s car had a cam that did not meet rule specs. Both were disqualified. That gave the win to Aubihl, his second of the season. Following the Jim’s Service/Classic Creations #31 in the new rundown were Teddy Oliver, Boron, Corey Evey, and Jesse Bailey. Others in the top ten were Dunlap, Osborne, Chambers, Ronald Bunton, and Justin Courtney. Martin and Evey claimed the heat wins, while Aubihl set fast time.

Kyle Grove’s mastery of the Outlaw Compact division continued on week #10. Starting at the back with a full field invert, the night’s fast qualifier worked the high lane to move quickly to the front. Picking cars off two at a time, the J.D. Byrider/Greg’s Recovery #3 moved quickly into the lead and went on to claim his track leading fifth victory of the season. Following the point leader was Jake Albright, Mike Swaney, John McNutt, and Jesse Page. Grove had the Hoover clean sweep of the night, as he also set fast time and won the heat.

Top qualifier Tim Frederick made things happen quickly in the Stock Compact feature, as he took over the race lead before you can say Anbesol. After the dominating effort, Frederick’s car was deemed illegal as it had too much camber on the right front wheel, a no-no in the Stock Compact division. Thus, the win went to the second place finisher, Braden Swaney. Swaney, the point leader, now has four feature wins during his rookie season. Following the 14-year old phenom were Brad McClain, Dan Buckey, Colton Cottis, and Allen Clark. Swaney won the heat, while Buckey was top qualifier.

The highlight of the night was the kid’s bicycle give-a-way at intermission. In all, 39 brand new bikes were given out. Those that stepped up were Canton Car Connection and Martin Racing, Midvale Speedway, Smith’s Auto Sales, Canton Auto Sales and Jason Anthony, Finish Line Motors, Canton Auto Salvage, Derek Grewell Racing, Rich Marcum Racing, Bill Aubihl Racing, Joe Ujcich Racing, Bill Ditto, Emery Brumit from Marathon Manufacturing, McClintock Racing, Scott Archer Racing, All County Towing, Chapner Locksmith, Stewart Flooring, John Wissman Racing, and the Onstotts and Huffman Racing. Thanks to everyone who donated and anyone I may have missed.

Racing will resume this coming Saturday night, July 16 with all five of the regular divisions. In addition to the heats and features, the fan favorite pursuit races will be on the card. For the only time this season, the Sr. Champ division of the Midvale Karting Series will be racing at intermission. Spectator Drags are also on the night’s jam-packed schedule.

Pit gates open at 2:00, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing will take the green at 6:30. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
