Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 1, 2011 |
Midvale Speedway put together a stellar show this past Friday, July 1. 31 Super Late Models were pitside for the running of the Downtown Ford 100, forcing officials to run a last chance to set the field. It was the first consy for a Midvale Main Event race in at least a decade. Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts also raced in front of a near capacity crowd.
In MERS qualifying, Canton, Ohio driver Rich Rohrer set quick time of the afternoon with a 13.623. Brian Short, 13.683, Bud Perry 13.715, Johnny Jenkins 13.717, and Josh Smith 13.780 were the top five. In all, 14 drivers were locked into the 100-lap race, while the rest were headed to the last chance.
The Consy event had Don Harvey, Jr., Mike Stacy, Ron Jaberg, Jr., Emerson Huffman, John Sandquist, Jr., and Burgess White transferring into the feature event. John Stroble, Bob Schneider, Jr., Scott Drake, Jamie Hunt, Derek Grewell, Jonathan Reitter, and Gene Molnar, Jr. were drivers that did not make the show.
Rick Sibila and Jimmy Carter lined up on the front row for leg #2 of the 2011 tour, as they just made the invert as the 10th and 9th fast qualifiers, respectively. When the green dropped, Carter shot into the lead, while Sibila followed him into turn three. Behind them, top qualifier Rich Rohrer was putting on a clinic.
Rohrer, who took the 2010-season off to work full-time on his NASCAR Fantasy Racing League team, used the outside lane to pick off no less than 5 spots on the race’s first lap. On lap 2, caution waved and the field was lined up for a single file restart. Rohrer made quick work of Drew Charlson and Rick Sibila and set his sight on the race leader. By lap 5, Rohrer had caught Carter and seconds later drove to the inside and passed him. His amazing run from tenth to first in five laps was erased moments later when a caution came out, putting Carter back ahead.
Over the next few restarts, Rohrer would pressure for a while then drop back, trying to cool his engine. Suffering from overheating problems, Rohrer would eventually retire during the race’s first half after he and Carter raced away from the field under each green flag run.
Over the second half of the race, Brian Short, Bud Perry, Tim Ice, Charlson, and Bob Sibila, Jr. all had pretty good cars and raced around the 3/10-mile in the top five to ten spots.
While some shuffling took place in the top ten, all fans’ eyes were on the battle for the final two spots on the track. Mike Stacy, driving a brand new FLF car and Ron Jaberg, Jr., a Midvale regular were not being kind to one another. Stacy, who was close to the top five around the race’s middle stage, got shuffled back when a car in the low lane slid sideways. From that point on it was a nightmare for the Enon, Ohio driver as he and Scott Baker had a couple of run-ins and the Jaberg/Stacy roughhousing tallied about three or four yellows.
As the laps wound down, it was Strongsville, Ohio driver Jimmy Carter claiming his first Main Event win at Midvale and his first outlaw Late Model win of the year. He had claimed four template wins leading up to the event.
Drew Charlson claimed his best finish of second, Ice was third, Bud Perry claimed fourth, and Bob Sibila, Jr. was fifth. Charlie Schultz, Scott Baker, Rick Sibila, Justin Schroeder, and Jaberg finished off the top ten.
The Main Event Racing Series will next be in action at Sandusky Speedway on Saturday, July 23.
Alex Rosenberry and Mark Willison, Jr. were the front row starters for the Summit Racing Economy Modified race. Willison controlled the point for a good part of the race and looked to be heading toward his first career Modified feature win. A late race restart cost him a chance at victory though, as Scott Archer moved to the front and took over on the outside lane when the green waved. The point runner-up had changed positions with point leader Dave Dobbins a couple of times before eventually getting out front. For the Arch-a-motive/Orwick’s Tree Service #28, it was win number three this season. Dobbins, Willison, Tom Garbrandt, and Kevin McClintock completed the top five. Randy Smart, Adam Stewart, Bill Burkholder, Joe Ujcich, and Lee McCreery were top ten finishers. Rosenberry and Stewart won the heats, while Smart set fast time.
In the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division, Don Boron, Jr. held the early lead before some of the fastest from the back started moving forward. The quickest of those was Dover, Ohio driver Bill Aubihl. Moving from the Sport Stock division, Aubihl came out with his new car for the first time the previous week and was quick but ran warm. The veteran driver made quick work of the field and raced to his first feature win in a number of season. Mike Martin, Joe Oliver, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Larry Smith were top five finishers. Bill Shimko, Corey Evey, Joe Linard, Teddy Oliver, and Boron finished the rest of the top ten. Joe Oliver and Bunton were heat winners. Mike Martin was top qualifier.
The Outlaw Compact feature had division frontrunner Kyle Grove putting on another display, including a three-wide pass in the high lane. Grove went on to claim his fourth feature win of the season, extending his point lead in the JD Byrider/CNAC Financing #3. Max McCartney, Jake Albright, Mike Swaney, and Jesse Page were top five finishers. Larry Ennis won the heat, while Grove also set fast time.
Braden Swaney continued his hot streak with his second win in the row in the Stock Compact division. He used the outside lane on the small oval to make it happen. Dan Buckey, Brad McClain, Colton Cottis, and Allen Clark finished in the top five.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, July 9 with Kid’s Bicycle give-a-ways at intermission. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts will all be in action.
Pit gates open at 2:00, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing action at 6:30. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
