Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 25, 2011 |
After a slow start to the season because of Mother Nature's wrath, the 2011 Mid-Season Championships seemed to arrive quickly this past Saturday, June 25. With the biggest car counts of the year in the Late Model and Pure Stock divisions, many expected it to be a long night, but drivers impressed in each of the five weekly divisions with solid, clean, and exciting racing all night long.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Models put on an absolute thriller. 18 cars, that had all but one qualify within about 1/2 second of each other earlier in the day, lined up for flagman Terry Colletti's green flag. With it waving high into the air, the chief starter is kind of tall, polesitter Rich Dessecker shot into the early lead. Bob Schneider, Jr., Bryant Smith, and Doug McMillen immediately started a battle that would make General David Petraeus proud. The three drivers diced high and low with Smith mainly running the high lane and Schneider and McMillen along the lowside. Smith would inch forward only to slide back moments later. It continued over the first twelve laps and excited fans in the stands. Despite having a number of run-ins already this season, Smith and McMillen raced each other extremely clean until paint was traded near the halfway point. In what looked to be a racing deal between the two, Smith spun sideways after the two raced for the same piece of real estate in turn one. Smith restarted from the tail, while McMillen continued to battle up front with Dessecker, Schneider, and then top qualifier Bubba Smith. As the final ten laps wound down, it became a three car lead pack for the win with Dessecker in control. McMillen and Smith each had a couple glimmers of hope to make a run at their third win of the season, but the former Super Late Model champion used years of experience to claim his first trophy since returning from some dirt burning a year ago. Following the Route 39 Auto Salvage #21 were McMillen and Smith who continue to show their muscle, from a car standpoint. Rick Sibila continued to look solid with a fourth place run, while Jonathan Reitter returned from engine failure with an impressive fifth place finish. Rich Marcum, Marcus Malcuit, Derek Grewell, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Schneider were top ten finishers. Amazingly, 16 out of 18 finished the race on the lead lap. Only Bob Eichel and Dave McAlicker pulled pitside with handling problems. Emerson Huffman, Schneider, and Grewell won the heats.
After going caution free one week ago, the Summit Racing Economy Modifieds had a couple of early cautions on Mid-Season Championship night before things got rolling. And once they did, it was another entertaining event. With a small invert of five, defending Sport Stock champion Randy Smart controlled the pace early. After being passed for the lead in the previous week's feature, Smart spent time during the Friday night practice trying to improve his car. While it helped some, point leader Dave Dobbins was proving that he is the man to beat in the championship race for the division's inaugural season. Putting his white #53 in the high lane, the Hartville, Ohio driver zipped by Kevin McClintock for second, and shortly thereafter by Smart for the lead. As the final 19 laps went caution free, Dobbins extended his lead to an impressive 2.455 seconds and claimed his second straight feature win. The Capital Powder Coating/R&R Carb ride was followed moments later by Smart, Scott Archer, Mark Willison, Jr., and McClintock. Alex Rosenberry, Adam Stewart, Tom Garbrandt, Bill Burkholder, and Lee McCreery added top ten's to their resumes. Smart won the fast heat, while Willison made a last turn pass to claim an exciting win in the second heat. Archer was fast qualifier.
13 out of the 15 Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks lined up for the feature race. In the 20-lap affair, Luther Chambers and Corey Evey raced around the asphalt oval on the first lap at the front of the field with Evey taking control. The rookie driver went on to lead the next four laps before Brian Minard set the pace looking for his third feature win. His lead, though, was gone in just a couple blinks of the eye, as Teddy Oliver assumed command on lap eight. Oliver had a challenger following him as Bill Aubihl was making a statement in his first night in the Pure Stock division. After claiming the second heat win, Aubihl moved from the back of the field into second quickly in feature racing. After following Oliver closely for two laps, Aubihl's car started to overheat and with water squirting from the overflow, he pulled into the pits. A late race restart slated point leader Mike Martin alongside Oliver for the final four laps, but Oliver again raced out front and to his fourth feature victory of the season. The Oliver's Garage/Word Of Life Church #49 was followed by Martin, Minard, TJ Barker, and Evey. Josh Flesher, Bear Schwartz, Noah Osborne, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Bob Passwaters, Jr. were top ten finishers. Martin and Aubihl won the heats as Oliver set fast time.
Adam Mishler won an exciting heat race by holding off a hard charging Kyle Grove early in the night. Later in the evening, Mishler led the field again in feature racing until he went a little bit too fast and broke out of his qualifying time. After being black flagged, Mishler pulled into the pits and Grove charged into the lead after another impressive run through the pack. The "Turtle" Jake Albright raced into second as the two shot away from the field. Jesse Page, who has had a solid point season so far, moved into third late in the race. When the race was deemed complete, it was Grove celebrating his third feature win of the season. The Affordable Towing/Greg's Recovery #3 was followed by Albright, Page, Tye Kelly, and Mike Swaney.
The Stock Compact division drivers continue to grow as a division and put on good shows despite a lot of youth and inexperience. Teddy Oliver, Jr. and Ryan Shreffler started at the front of the field and it was Oliver leading the first lap. Starting to work forward in the high lane was top qualifier and point leader Braden Swaney. The 14 year old competitor, despite winning a race earlier in the season, was running his best race of the year on Mid-Season Championship night. After starting fifth, Swaney took over the lead on lap five and never looked back, claiming his second win of the year. The Barnett Realty/My Museum Tattoo #27 led Shreffler, Colton Cottis, Dan Buckey, and Allen Clark across the line. Shreffler's run was taken away in post race inspection after his car was found to have too much camber. Thus, Howard Bartholow moved into the top five. Buckey and Clark won the heats.
This week, Midvale Speedway racing will take place on Friday, July 1 with the raindate set for Saturday if needed. The Main Event Racing Series will be making their first of two visits to the track this season in the running of the Downtown Ford 100. In addition, the Economy Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, and Stock Compacts will also race. After many requests, the fireworks will be back for this year's show as well.
Pit gates will open Friday at 2:00, while grandstands open at 4:00. MERS hotlaps are from 4:00-4:30 and 5:00-5:30, while a scuff session will be held from 6:00-6:10. Midvale division hotlaps are from 4:30-5:00 and 5:30-6:00.
Qualifying to set Friday's fields will start at 6:10, while racing action will take the green at 8:00.
Grandstand admission is $18 for adults and seniors, while kids 6-15 are $10. Pit admission is $30 for members and $35 for non-members.
An additional open practice will be on Thursday night from 4:00-8:00, with a $10 per person charge pitside.
