Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 11, 2011 |
TECH UPDATE: As previously noted, the Economy Modified class went through a tech process after Saturday's race that included checking for legality of fuel. The test was done to make sure that no one was running the expensive oxygenated fuel that some competitors were using early this season to try and gain a horsepower advantage in the crate engine class.
Fuel was taken and tested on Monday and Tuesday this week. Working with fuel specialists, track officials found that the unknown fuel that was found in a couple of competitors cars was not the oxygenated fuel as expected. It was an unleaded 109 octane fuel that was not illegal as of this past Saturday. It's cost and aroma is much like the oxygenated fuel that was banned a week ago, so officials felt that further testing needed to take place. The finish from Saturday night will stand as originally posted.
The rules now state that only pump gas and VP brand 110 octane fuel is allowed in the Economy Modified division from this point on. The division is intended to be "Economical" and $15 a gallon gas is not. Thank you for your patience on this matter.
Mother Nature was in a good mood for a change, this past Saturday, June 11 at Midvale Speedway. Despite an unfavorable forecast, officials pushed forward with the TBRA Late Model 75 as well as four other divisions of action. Turned out to be the right move, as the weather was beautiful all day and night at the 3/10-mile oval.
In TBRA Late Model Series qualifying, Strongsville, Ohio driver Jimmy Carter clocked in with a 14.496 to set quick time. Wade Miniea, Doug Sommers, Mike Mazzagati, and Tyler Strickland were top ten qualifiers. Carter pulled an "8" pill and put Jim Ripley and Ali Kern on the front row. When veteran starter Ray Dorko waved the green, it was the young lady, Ali Kern, racing into the top spot. The race went green for the first 14 circuits, as Kern led the way with Ripley, Norm Taylor, Strickland, and Carter completing the top five. Carter continued his strong run picking off spot after spot over the first 20 laps. On lap 21, Carter had worked into the runner up and got the caution he needed to pull alongside for the lead battle. When the green again waved, Carter hooked through turns one and two and shot into the top spot, leaving Kern in his wake. The race's final caution came out on lap 56. Over the final 19 circuits, the Carter show continued and he picked up his second straight feature win in TBRA racing to start their season. Following the Brian Short owned Gary Balough Performance Center/Maximum Elevator #28 were Kern with an impressive second place run, Ripley, Sommers, and Miniea. The rest of the top ten were Mazzagatti, Tom Fares, Jr., Billy Strehle, Doug Mate, and Strickland.
Young rookie driver Alex Rosenberry led early on in the Summit Racing Economy Modified feature. However, teammate Ryan Tedesco was looking strong early and was able to take the spot away on lap five. Those two competitors ran first and second until Rosenberry was dropped to third in the outside lane. As he tried to squeeze back to the bottom lane, Kevin McClintock was already there and the pair made contact, resulting in the race's first yellow. The caution moved Scott Archer to the high lane for the restart. Amazingly, the Canton, Ohio driver was strong enough to maneuver the second groove and close the door in front of Tedesco, going on for his second feature win of the early season. The Arch-a-Motive/Orwick's Tree Service #28 was followed by Tedesco, McClintock, Dave Dobbins, and Tom Garbrandt. Others in the top ten were Mark Willison, Jr., Adam Stewart, Randy Smart, Alex Rosenberry, and Lee McCreery. In post race tech, fuel was taken from the competitor's cars and was taken to the Midvale Speedway R&D Center for testing. Results are pending and the results could be adjusted at a future date. Tedesco and Stewart claimed heat wins, while Dobbins set fast time.
Canton, Ohio driver Teddy Oliver continues to carry over some of his success from his championship in 2010 to this year. Oliver, who came into the event with a slim point lead, was second quick in qualifying and raced to the front of the feature pack with top qualifier Mike Martin in tow. Martin followed him closely, lap-after-lap, but never was able to seriously challenge for the victory. The Philchalmers.com/Oliver's Garage #49 was followed across the line by Martin, Corey Evey, Don Boron, Jr., and Noah Osborne. Bill Shimko, Brian Minard, Josh Flesher, TJ Barker, and George Bowers were top ten finishers. Minard won the heat.
Mike Swaney led the first four laps of the Outlaw Compact feature but was picked up a speeding ticket for breaking out of his qualifying time. He pulled to the infield, while top qualifier Kyle Grove inherited the lead. Grove, close to a couple of wins in his lightning quick #3 this season, finally kept luck on his side and completed a clean sweep in convincing style. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver led the final twelve laps of the race and claimed his first victory of the season in the J.D. Byrider/Greg's Recovery #3. Jake Albright, Bryce Allensworth, Jesse Page, and Adam Mishler came across the stripe in the top five. After the race, John McNutt, who had won three features to start the season, drove in a hurried fashion and rubbed some paint with Albright's #10. Then in the pits, members of Albright's team went to McNutt's pit for an angered conference. Both drivers were disqualified from the feature race for actions detrimental to stock car racing. Grove and Swaney won the heats.
Kohlten Bryan led the first lap of the Stock Compact feature but his advantage was short lived. Second year driver, Colton Cottis, was hungry for his first career feature win and drove into the top spot. The top two qualifiers, Braden Swaney and Brad McClain, took over second and third on lap three and set their sights on the race's quarterback. As the laps wound down, Cottis made all the right moves in his Wilkin's Body Shop/Baxter's BP #128 and found himself in Midvale Speedway's end zone, known as Downtown Ford Victory Lane. The Sherrodsville, Ohio driver was followed by Swaney, McClain, Dan Buckey, and Chris Bloom. McClain set fast time and won the heat.
