Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | April 30, 2011 |
After a long and grueling winter and a record setting wet spring, drivers were finally able to shake the off-season rust off this past Saturday, April 30 at Midvale Speedway. Debuting was the newly formed Summit Racing Economy Modified division. In addition, the McIntosh Oil Company Late Models, Pure Stocks, Outlaw Compacts, Stock Compacts, and Figure 8's also raced. Round one of the Spectator Drag championship schedule was held as well.
Anticipation built during the last few months to see the new Modified division. Running with affordable GM crate engines, the class was very tight during the afternoon qualifying session. In fact, the top six were within about two tenths of one another. The invert for the 20-lap feature race was a "5" putting former Sport Stock champion Kevin McClintock on the pole. McClintock, who started his career many years ago in the Detroit Iron class, never moved out of that division which became known as the Sports Stocks a few years ago. With that division no longer running, the McClintock Racing Team decided to try their hand at the new division. When the green dropped, it was clear to see that McClintock was going to be tough to beat. The Dover, Ohio driver raced into the lead, while outside polesitter Ryan Tedesco followed him in a close second. One change took place on lap 14 as the second place car of Tedesco dropped off the pace due to rear-end issues. From the start to lap 18, the race went without a caution as the top five or six cars ran bumper-to-bumper out front. After a Randy Smart spin, McClintock and Dave Dobbins lined up double file for the restart. When the green waved again, McClintock resumed in the lead and went on to the first Summit Racing Economy Modified feature win. Following the Federated Auto Parts/Broadrun Cheesehouse #38 were Dobbins, Scott Archer, Mark Willison, Jr., and Alex Rosenberry. Smart, Tom Garbrandt, Adam Stewart, Mike Martin and Tedesco were top ten finishers. McClintock and Garbrandt won the heats, while Smart set fast time at a 14.807.
Drama was at a premium during the first McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature of the year. 14 cars lined up for Terry Colletti's green flag. At the start, Brad Channell, new to the Midvale Late Model class this year, took command while Gene Molnar, Jr. dropped into second. Behind them, double file racing was keeping the fastest qualifiers deep in the field, thus allowing Channell to build up a sizable lead. On lap ten, Bob Schneider, Jr. spun in turn four to bunch up the field. After a Rich Dessecker caution on lap eleven, the field was again doubled up and it was during this time that the quickest qualifiers were working forward. On lap 13, Bryant Smith, who had just taken second, got a run on Channell coming down the front stretch. Going into turn one, Channell trying to protect the position, came down the banking and the two leaders made contact. Channell spun and was relegated to the tail for the restart. That put the Smith brothers on the front row for a family feud. After two failed restarts for spins back in the pack, the race was able to get back underway. On that start, Bubba Smith, via the outside lane had the advantage exiting turn two. Not wanting to give up the lead, Bryant Smith gave it all he could coming off of turn two, slid up the banking some, rubbed some paint and spun going into three putting him to the tail. On the move at that point was top qualifier Doug McMillen. Big Mac took over the second spot and followed the leader closely on his rear bumper. Unfortunately for Smith, a yellow came out with two to go. When the green waved for the final time, Smith took the advantage going into one. McMillen went high into the turn, took a sharp left, got on the gas early and shot to the underside of Smith, making just slight contact with the left rear quarter panel. The two rubbed just a little bit of paint going down the backstretch as the Red Rocket inherited the lead. On the final circuit, Smith made a last stitch effort to get it back coming off of turn two, using the chrome horn. McMillen got sideways, Smith checked up and both continued for the top two spots. At the stripe, New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Doug McMillen was followed by Bubba Smith, Rich Marcum, Emerson Huffman, and John Sandquist. Brad Channell, Joe Fewkes, Bob Schneider, Jr., Bryant Smith, and Derek Grewell were the rest of the top ten. Rich Marcum, who ran a great feature to avoid all of the problems that were going on around him for a top five run, won the fast heat, while Channel claimed the second heat race win.
Rookie Noah Osbourne led lap one of the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. Behind him, veterans Todd Miller, Brian Minard, and Teddy Oliver were on their way to the front. Miller took the lead on lap two, while Minard and Oliver followed. On lap eight, the second and third place cars got together, relegating Minard to the tail. The green waved with Oliver starting to take the lead from Miller. Coming off of turn four, Miller went up the banking to try and slow Oliver's progress. The two hit, knocking a wheel off of Oliver's car. Miller ran over it and it lauched his car, Dukes of Hazzard style, high into the air with all four tires off the ground. Oliver was done for the night, while Miller continued with suspension damage to the front end. Rookie Corey Evey took over the lead and was able to run a solid line, not making any mistakes, to claim his first career Pure Stock win in his first race in the division. Not only did he claim the trophy, but also will be happy to take a thousand bucks from car owner Randy Smith who told him if he won his first race he would give him a grand. He never thought it would happen. The rookie proved him wrong. Brian Minard, Vince Martin, Don Boron, Jr., and Miller finished in the top five. Oliver won the heat and set fast time.
The Compact division was split up this season into two different classes, the Outlaws for guys that make changes to their cars and the Stock Compacts for those that are new and would like to keep the alterations at a minimum. In the Outlaw class, John McNutt and Kyle Grove have things figured out early. The top two qualifiers were able to dice through the traffic and move to the front early. McNutt had the lead with Grove challenging to the outside. Side-by-side for several laps, the two ran each other extremely clean. It looked as though Grove was going to be able to get him with about two to go, but his car slipped just slightly coming to the white, which allowed McNutt to take the advantage again. Coming to the checkered, Grove made a last second run that made it a photo finish at the line. Coming up just short by an eyelash, Grove brought home an impressive second, while McNutt's #35 went to victory lane. The Jimmy Martin/Lee's Famous Recipe car was followed in the rundown by Grove, Max McCartney, Rich Dunlap, and Mike Swaney. Jake Albright, Tim Frederick, Jesse Page, Bryce Allensworth, and Tye Kelly were top ten finishers. McCartney and Ryan Shreffler were heat winners. Grove set fast time.
The Stock Compact race was exciting to the finish as well. Teammates Dan Buckey and Brad McClain were able to catch and pass rookie Kohlten Bryan on lap three of the event. Buckey protected the low lane, while McClain, who was top qualifier ran the high side. Lap-after-lap, the two ran nearly unchanged in synchronized formation. At the stripe on the checkered flag lap, it was Dan Buckey's #50 by three one-thousandths of a second over McClain, Colton Cottis, Charles Storesina, and Waylon Orr. Tim Frederick, Braden Swaney, Gary Murray, Kohlten Bryan, and Clayton Olvier finished in the top ten. Buckey and Cottis won the heats.
The Figure 8 feature had Lennie Orr claiming a dominating victory after Don Boron and Bubba Smith got together at the green. That gave Orr a big lead that he never relinquished to claim the top prize.
The first of eight spectator drag championship races were held. It was Kevin Rennicker in his Trans Am claiming the win. He is now locked into the championship event in October.
Racing will resume this coming Saturday, May 7. All five of the weekly divisions will be in action plus hotdogs and pops will be just $1 in the concession stands. Bring the family and come hungry and thirsty.
Pit gates will open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying and grandstands at 4:45, and racing will begin at 6:30. Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
