McMillen’s Dream Season Continues
September 4, 2010
<center>McMillen’s Dream Season Continues<center>On the next to last point’s night in the 2010 racing season, Midvale Speedway fans saw repeat winners in victory lane for each of the feature events. It was a night that saw some exciting racing action, especially from the Compacts, as well as four disqualifications. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were racing for valuable points as the season comes to an end. It was “cone night” which means that drivers choose their lane for each start/restart. Strategy came into play each time the cone was placed on the finish line.

Greg Beule and Derek Grewell were slated side-by-side on the front row of the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature. After two failed starts, Beule and Grewell finally got on the same page to get the race underway. Beule took the immediate lead with Grewell slipping on the highside. Division front-runner Doug McMillen took over second and started to look high on Beule. The race’s final caution waved on lap four as Bob Eichel and Ron Jaberg, Jr. had a mishap. The yellow turned out to be McMillen’s best friend as it slated him on the highside of Beule for the restart. Green back out, McMillen rocketed into the lead with Mike Miller and Bubba Smith following. Over the final 21 laps, the trio ran nose-to-tail, with the cars running very equal times. The Parkway Honda/Rick Hostetler Trucking #54 was never seriously challenged and McMillen picked up his fourth feature win of the season in just 7 starts. Miller, Smith, Bryant Smith, and Beule were top five finishers. Grewell won the fast heat, while Jaberg claimed the second heat and pursuit.

The Tusco Net Sport Stocks have had small fields all season, but Saturday night was their smallest ever. In practice, Jerry McNealy broke a transmission. Ron Kirkpatrick decided to run the Late Model instead of a Sport Stock. Hoopingarner Racing didn’t show and Bill Aubihl had other weekend plans. That made it a grand total of three for the night’s action. It did happen to be the three quickest cars, though. In qualifying, Tad Grove set fast time and a new track record with a 15.038. Point leader Randy Smart was able to fend him off in the heat to pick up the victory. In the feature, Smart took the lead from the getgo, while Grove moved past Kevin McClintock into second. Grove, just as he did last week, followed Smart closely looking for an opening. However, Grove’s run would come up short, as he crossed the line in second. Tech officials were going to tech the Grove car, due to the new track record, but the team refused, thus losing the track record, points, and money for the night. For Randy Smart, it was his eighth feature win of the season. McClintock was credited with second.

Brian Minard took the early lead in the 20-lap Pure Stock feature. After a lap two restart, Minard fell back to second, as Adam Stewart rocketed into the lead. Stewart, turning his best qualifying lap of the year, was wicked fast in the feature as well. The final 18 laps went caution free with Stewart coming across the line as victor. However, in post race inspection, illegal work was found done to the heads, disqualifying the #62. That gave the win to Chris Mick, his fourth in six tries. The Ullman Oil/American Thunder #85 was followed by Minard, Bob Passwaters, Sr., Bill Burkholder, and Teddy Oliver. Minard won the fast heat, while Oliver claimed the second heat and pursuit. Lee McCreery was top qualifier but elected to turn down tech officials requests to check the heads. He was the disqualified.

Don Rufener, III led the first seven laps of the fast Compact feature, but fans knew it was just a matter of time before problems arose for the youngster. His very loose handling racecar was sliding sideways through the turns, and on lap ten his car’s rearend washed out even more and then collected the #09 of A.J. Diano who wasn’t able to check up from behind. The restart lineup put Jake Albright on the pole with Kyle Rector alongside. Rector took the lead when the green was again out. From that point on, it was the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver picking up his second feature win in-a-row. The John W Cookson/Gross Welding #22 was followed by Albright, John McNutt, A.J. Diano, Bryce Allensworth, and Rich Dunlap. McNutt elected to pass on the tech inspection and was disqualified.

Larry Ennis, Jr. led the first lap of the second Compact feature with Ashlee Page taking over on lap two. Meanwhile, Earl Scranton was on his way through the pack. Scranton shot by Page on lap 10 to take the lead and go on to the victory, his third slow feature victory of the year. Tim Frederick applied a little pressure late and finished second, while Mike Swaney, Page, and Corey Evey finished the top five.

Kyle Grove, Don Rufener, III, and Ashlee Page won the heats. Jake Albright won the pursuit. Rector was credited with setting fast time after McNutt’s disqualification.

The final point night of the season will be this coming Saturday, September 11. Season Championship night will feature double points for all five divisions. Spectator Drags will be held at intermission.

Pit gates will open at 2:00, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will start at 6:30.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free.

The season’s last race is on Saturday, September 18 with the running of the Fall Classic. The second ever Midvale Speedway trailer race will be held.
