Smith Takes Exciting Late Model Win
August 28, 2010
<center>Smith Takes Exciting Late Model Win<center>As the 2010 championship season rolls down the final stretch, the action continues to put fans on the edge of their seats with building drama. This past Saturday, Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts were all racing, while the spectator drags were on tap at intermission.

Bob "The Animal" Eichel and Kenny Cantrell brought the Late Model field to green in the 25-lap feature. Eichel, via the pole position, raced into the early lead with Bob Schneider, Jr. taking second. Schneider quickly placed his car on the outside of Eichel and looked destined to be out front. After leading lap two by a few inches, Eichel fought back with an improved lap on the inside lane. The duo put on a great show over the first five laps before contact ensued on the frontstretch with five laps in. Eichel's car slammed a uke tire and was done for the night, while Schneider went to the tail. That put Bryant Smith and Emerson Huffman side-by-side for the restart. Smith quickly went out front when the green dropped. His older brother, Bubba, looking for his first win since late in the 2008 season despite last year's championship, moved into second. Running single file until the halfway mark, Bubba Smith would get his shot when a caution waved on lap fourteen. Midvale Speedway's double file restarts slated the brothers even coming to the green. As they raced down the frontstretch, contact was made. Bryant slid toward the infield sideways as Terry Colletti, the track flagman waved the yellow. Amazingly, Smith was able to keep the car righted. Colletti admitted fault on the inadvertent yellow and everyone was realigned to try it again. Finally, after one more failed restart because of a spin back in the field, the two were ready to race for the family bragging rights. This time it was Bubba getting the advantage in the outside lane and closing the door in turn one. Over the final ten circuits, the night's fast qualifier extended his advantage on the rest of the pack to claim the long overdue victory. Following the Finish Line Motors/Smith's Auto Sales #12 were Bryant Smith, Mike Miller, Emerson Huffman, and Rich Marcum. The run was impressive for Marcum, after crashing hard during an incident with Bryant Smith in the pursuit. Bob Schneider, Jr. won the fast heat, while Derek Grewell took the second heat and the pursuit.

Ron Kirkpatrick led the first two laps of the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature before the division dominator, Randy Smart scooted by. The night's top qualifier, Tad Grove, took over second shortly thereafter and set his sights on Smart. On lap eight, Smart gave up just enough of the bottom lane coming off of turn two and Grove filled it. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver motored by the division point leader and went on to pick up his third victory of the season. Following the J.D. Byrider/CNAC Financing #3 were Smart, Bill Aubihl, Kevin McClintock, and Jerry McNealy. Smart won the heat and pursuit.

Larry Smith and Bill Burkholder were the front row starters in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock division feature. Smith went into the early lead with Chris Mick claiming second by the completion of lap two. By lap four, Mick had gone to the outside of Smith and raced into the lead. The race's first caution came out on lap five, as Lee McCreery and point leader Teddy Oliver made some contact entering turn one. Oliver's car slammed the turn one wall, ending his night. Three more cautions slowed the pace of the race but no one was able to challenge Mick. The win was very satisfying for Mick, as he and his crew worked hard over the last few weeks to get the car back together after a grinding crash. For Mick, it was his third feature win in five tries in the Midvale Pure Stock class. The American Thunder/Ullman Oil #85 was followed by Burkholder, Vince Martin, Lee McCreery, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Mick won the first heat, while Minard won the second heat and the pursuit. Oliver was top qualifier.

Brad Henry led early in the Compact fast feature. Moving quickly into contention, though, was Kyle Rector. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver had been fast qualifier six of the ten times he has raced this year, but on this night a slight bobble cost him a chance at the top time. It worked out perfectly in the long run, though, as it set him up for a second place fast heat finish, a pursuit win, and now a good shot at the main event. Right after the crossed flags signified the halfway mark, Rector drove by Henry for the lead and, eventually, the win. The John W. Cookson/Autism Speaks #22 was followed by Henry, Kyle Grove, John McNutt, Don Rufener, Jr., and Rich Dunlap. After having a great points night, an unfortunate turn of events took place pitside as Henry drove to the wrong side of the tech line and was disqualified from the night's events.

Larry Ennis, Jr. and Ashlee Page traded the lead over the first five laps. Behind the duo was Neil Rolli, who is having a great season of Compact and Figure 8 racing. Rolli took the top spot on lap 6 and went on to claim the win with a near 2 second lead. Tim Frederick, Corey Evey, Ed McClain, and Mike Swaney were top five finishers behind the Murray's Bail Bonds/KC Mustang Korral #46.

Kevin Renicker was victorious in the evening's spectator drag events. The final spectator drag event of the season will be Saturday, September 11.

This Saturday, September 4 will be another can't miss, action packed night. Figure 8's will join the Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts for a full show of heats, pursuits, and features. At intermission, the Uhrichsville McDonald's car show will cruise around the 3/10-mile oval.

The night will also be "drivers choose their lane night" for heats and features. On each start and restart, drivers will line up single file. A cone will then be placed on the frontstretch, giving them the option of lanes. Once a driver chooses one lane, they cannot change their mind and join the other groove before the green comes out. It will be possible to pick up several spots under caution, depending on what the other competitors in front of them do. It was done twice during the 2009 season, but this will be the first time it has been used at Midvale for more than just heats. If a driver were to fall out due to mechanical issues after choosing lanes, that lane will just move forward to fill his space. Also, if a caution waves before one lap is completed after a start or restart, the charged driver will be sent to the tail, while the line in which he was in will just move forward.

Pit gates will open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying at 5, and racing at 6:30. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free.
