Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | August 7, 2010 |
Battles were furious, fenders were flying, and wins were tough to come by as the point races heated up this past Saturday, August 7 at Midvale Speedway. Five divisions of racing were on the car, while the Texas Roadhouse Line Dancers performed at intermission.
In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, Kenny Cantrell and Derek Grewell brought the 16-car field to the green. Grewell, a rookie in the class this season, beat Cantrell to turn one to take the lead. However, the start was negated by a caution moments later. On the second start, Cantrell got the better jump and set the pace. As he, Grewell, and Ron Jaberg, Jr. ran the bottom single file, last week’s winner Doug “Big Mac” McMillen wisely raced into the outside groove. With five laps complete, McMillen raced to the outside of Cantrell. The leader, trying to fend off the challenge, slid high coming off of turn four, allowing Grewell to look inside. Cantrell came back down the banking, the car somewhat sideways, clipped the Grewell ride and created a frontstech mishap. That setup a front row consisting of McMillen and Jaberg. After a couple of yellows for minor spins and bangups, the final 20 laps would be run caution free with McMillen building up a big lead mid-race only to have it eaten away toward the end. However, the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver was strong enough over the final circuits to cross the stripe .458 seconds ahead of the hard-charging Bryant Smith. The Parkway Honda/Lee’s Famous Recipe #54 was followed by Smith, Ryan Tedesco, Mike Miller, and Bubba Smith. Emerson Huffman and Bob Eichel won the heats, while Jonathan Reitter took the pursuit. Bubba Smith was again the top qualifier.
Polesitter Don Rufener, Jr. took command early in the 15-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature. Rufener, driving the Hoopingarner Racing #14, had Kevin McClintock glued to the rear bumper, waiting for the leader to make a mistake. On lap four, top qualifier Tad Grove raced to the highside of the race’s runner-up. Grove, inching his way forward to his second feature win of the year, worked outside of Rufener before the race reached the halfway point, in fact, leading lap seven. However, after overshooting turn one, Rufener moved back ahead on the inside lane. Grove did not give up, though, and continued to run the outside lane until he perservered. At the finish, it was the J.D. Byrider/Grove Home Medical #3 picking up win #2 in 2010. Rufener, Bill Aubihl, McClintock, and Ron Kirkpatrick were the other top five finishers. McClintock won the heat, while Grove set fast time and won the pursuit.
Drivers in the Pure Stock feature took a page out of the “Survival of the Fittest” theory. On lap two of the race, point leader Teddy Oliver was trying to work by Bill Burkholder. However, going down the backstretch, Oliver must’ve felt that he had the Burkholder ride cleared, went up the banking, and created contact between the two. That shot the #49 of Oliver into the wall, then back down the track, collecting a few other competitors. Most severely damaged was Chris Mick, who had won the last two feature races. Another car that looked tore up was Mike Martin. However, despite having all body panels except the two rear quarterpanels and rear bumper cover ripped off, the wheels were still pointing in the right direction and the #5 was wicked fast. After the crash, Lee McCreery started up front and looked to be on his way to victory. However, fans were watching as the Shelbi’s Sweets and Treats ride was making quick work of the field. By lap 7, Martin had worked into second and set his sights on the leader. Right after the halfway signal was displayed, Martin shot by McCreery for the top spot, bringing a double scoop of happiness to the team and fans. At the checkered, Martin and McCreery came across the line with about a half track advantage on the rest of the field. Brian Minard, Burkholder, and Shawn Kaufman were top five finishers. Oliver and Minard won the heats, Stewart the pursuit, and Keith Anderson was top qualifier.
Don Rufener, III, beat Neil Rolli around the track on the first lap of the fast Compact feature. Rufener, building a healthy lead early, looked destine for another feature win during his sophomore season. A caution close the halfway point negated a sizable lead and created an exciting finish. On lap 10, division veteran John McNutt moved by Brad Henry for the second spot. Following Rufener closely, McNutt took advantage of a leader miscue on the final lap. As Rufener, III exited turn two, his ride slid just slightly up the banking, giving McNutt the room he needed to challenge on the backstretch. As the two exited turn four, McNutt pulled ahead and raced across the line with the dramatic feature victory. The Dennison Yard/McNutt Racing #35 was followed by Rufener, Henry, Rich Dunlap, and Kyle Grove.
Rich Duvall led several laps in the early going of the second Compact feature. Ashlee Page raced by him after a restart. Page, setting a blistering pace, ended up breaking out of her qualifying time, giving the lead to Tim Frederick. The Sherrodsville, Ohio proved too strong for the rest of the field and went on to claim the victory. Corey Evey, Larry Ennis, Richard Duvall, and Mike Swaney finished in the top five.
Neil Rolli continued his domination of the Figure 8 division with another win, extending his point lead.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 14 as the ARCA Super Truck Series will visit. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race. Heats, pursuits, and features will be run.
Pits open at 1:30, hotlaps at 3:00, qualifying at 5:00, and racing at 6:30.
