2026 Race Season
Smart Continues Sport Stock Dominance
July 31, 2010

Smart Continues Sport Stock Dominance
The racing season continued this past Saturday night, July 31 at Midvale Speedway. It was a night that saw a handful of repeat winners, while one new face also celebrated in victory lane.

In the Tusco Net Sport Stock division, Jerry McNealy controlled the field during the early stages of the 15-lap feature. Kevin McClintock took second after an early restart and began to challenge shortly thereafter. In fact, McClintock was able to edge ahead at the line on lap six, but McNealy was not to give up. As it looked like McClintock was going to get out front, McNealy’s car slid off the bottom in turns one and two, creating just enough contact to pull back ahead. That, in turn, allowed top qualifier Randy Smart to join the battle. Smart took second on lap ten and by the end of lap eleven was the new leader. Cruising to victory, it was the seventh feature win this season for Smart, extending his point lead in the division. The Shook Auto/Dover Dental Group #17 was followed by McNealy, Tad Grove, McClintock, and Bill Aubihl. Smart won the heat, while McClintock won the pursuit.

Dustin Hayes and Emerson Huffman were the front row starters in the 25-lap McIntosh Oil Company Late Model feature. The last time that duo made up the front row, Huffman picked up his first career feature win. This time, however, Huffman’s car faltered from the start with Hayes going out front. Bob Schneider, Jr., like Hayes looking for his first Late Model feature win, moved into second before the first caution came out for a grinding crash on the backstretch. It happened as Ryan Tedesco got to the outside of Tom Garbrandt exiting turn two. Garbrandt, having no idea that anyone was on his outside, came up the track just a little, creating contact and sending his car slamming into the backstetch, and then, the turn three wall. Back to green, Schneider restarted in the outside lane but was pushed back as Hayes slid up the track. That allowed Doug McMillen to the lowside. Moments later, Haye’s #43 slowed, possibly for a flat tire, bunching up the field behind him. Unable to miss the trouble, Bryant Smith and Schneider got together slamming the two into the outside wall in turn four. Schneider’s front end was demolished and the 5th place point competitor will need a front clip. Bryant Smith, Bubba Smith, Ryan Tedesco, and Emerson Huffman also sustained damage. Only Bubba Smith and Tedesco were able to continue. Eventually, things settled down enough for Doug McMillen to build a lead and go on to his second feature win of the season. The Lee’s Famous Recipe/Hostetler Trucking #54 was followed by Todd Ripley, Mike Miller, Tedesco, and Bubba Smith. Schneider and Eichel won the heats, while Jonathan Reitter won the pursuit. Bubba Smith set fast time by just .002 of a second over Tedesco.

The Northern Ohio TeleCommunity Credit Union Legends put on an exciting 15-lap feature. A.J. Yoder, having a strong run in practice and qualifying, was out front early in the main event. On lap three, Jason Knox took the lead away and set sail. Taking second, moments later, was top qualifier Brandon Huff. It was clear to see that Huff had the car to challenge Knox. Huff, who had won the only Legend feature at Midvale so far this season, took the lead with four to go but overshot turn four and opened up the bottom for Knox to get back around. The Huff fans were shocked, but the #21 would not disappoint. Setting up Knox on the final lap, Huff went high into one and shot underneath the leader in turn two. Coming to the stripe at the checkered, Huff claimed the win by just .02 of a second. The East Palestine, Ohio driver was followed by Knox, Yoder, Tyler Turner, and Jeff Ehret. Randy Burns won the heat.

The Pure Stock feature had Brian Minard leading the first three circuits before the race’s first caution. The restart slated Chris Mick to the outside. When the green again dropped, Mick raced out front with Lee McCreery following. Many thought that McCreery would challenge, but Mick was strong during the 15-lap event, extending his advantage each lap. The Stow, Ohio driver was credited with the feature win one week ago when the #5 of Mike Martin was disqualified for a weight infraction after the race. This week, though, Mick crossed the stripe in first, claiming his second win in a row. The American Thunder/HOC Transport #85 was followed by McCreery, Minard, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Teddy Oliver won the heat but had mechanical problems in the feature. Bob Passwaters, Sr. won the pursuit, while Mick set fast time.

Don Rufener, III was the polesitter but it was outside polesitter Brad Henry taking the point. Henry, looking for win number one in 2010, set a solid pace as he extended the lead lap by lap. Don Rufener, Jr. took second from his son in the early laps, but the youngster said “not so fast, dad” and went back by him. Down the stretch, the racing throughout the pack was double wide, with no line necessarily moving forward. At the checkered, the Stocker Trucking/Allied #33 was chased by Rufener, III, John McNutt, Rich Dunlap, and Kyle Rector.

The Compact second feature had Jill Harshey setting the early pace. Behind her, all kinds of exciting action was taking place. Earl Scranton, Neil Rolli, and Wes Ennis, three very fast cars were dicing their ways to the front. After a couple of cautions, Rolli took the lead on lap four. Scranton and Ennis followed as the three battled up front. Rolli held the lead, while Ennis took second away from Scranton. That turned out to be a very important pass, as Rolli missed the tech line giving the win to the second place car. For Ennis, it was his third feature win in 2010. His other two came in the fast Compact features. Others in the official top five were Scranton, Larry Ennis, Harshey, and Jeffrey Orr.

Rich Dunlap, Jeffrey Orr, and Corey Evey won the heats, while Don Rufener, III won the pursuit. Kyle Rector set fast time with a new track record.

Racing continues this coming Saturday, August 7 with five divisions of action and racecar bingo. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s will all be in action. Heats, pursuits, and features are planned.

Pit gates open at 2, hotlaps at 3, qualifying is at 5, and racing will start at 6:30.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
