Smith Bests Strong Late Model Field At Midvale
July 17, 2010

Smith Bests Strong Late Model Field At Midvale
A hot and muggy Saturday, July 17, resulted in some exciting, nearly accident free racing action. Despite the kids racecar rides at intermission, the racing program was completed at 9:20, after a 6:30 start time. That was thanks to a relatively error free program with only one car all night going off on the hook.

In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, 19 cars were in the pits with 18 lining up for the 25-lap feature. The invert for the race was a season small “5”, putting Emerson Huffman and Bryant Smith, the fifth and fourth fast qualifiers up front. With the green flag displayed, Smith used the outside lane to rocket into the lead, while Huffman slid back on the inside lane. Caution waved on lap 4, which slated Rich Marcum on the outside of Smith for the restart. Again, Smith pulled in front of the field. Just two more green flag laps would go by before Smith would have another challenger. This time, it was point leader Mike Miller on a lap 6 restart. Miller raced hard on the outside lane. The duo ran side-by-side for a couple of laps, trading paint, and looking as if an incident was imminent. Eventually, Smith pulled ahead, as Miller defended second from Bubba Smith. The race went the final 20 laps caution free as Smith picked up his first feature win in 2010. Following the Canton, Ohio driver in his Canton Auto Sales/Canton Auto Salvage #1 were Miller, Bubba Smith, Bob Schneider, Jr., and Ron Jaberg, Jr. The rest of the top ten were Jonathan Reitter, Rich Marcum, Tom Garbrandt, Mark Willison, and Kenny Cantrell. Bryant Smith won the dash, Willison and Garbrandt the heats, and Bubba Smith was top qualifier.

Bill Aubihl led the first lap of the Tusco Net Sport Stock feature, but polesitter Jerry McNealy pulled ahead for the next two circuits. Exiting the second turn moments later with pressure from Kevin McClintock from behind, McNealy spun, putting McClintock and Randy Smart on the front row for the restart. When the green again waved, Smart darted out front in his Kurt Garren MD/Shook Auto #17 and won his 5th feature of the season in convincing fashion. McClintock, Bill Aubihl, Jerry McNealy, and Don Rufener, Jr. completed the top five finishers. Smart also won the dash, while McClintock was top qualifier.

Adam Stewart started up front and took the early lead in the Pure Stock 20-lap main event. Much like last week, teammate Teddy Oliver took second quickly and pulled alongside. In a complete replay of last week’s event, Oliver and Stewart ran wheel to wheel for most of the first 14 laps. Behind them, Mike Martin was looking for an opening. He found one on a couple of occasions, but the door was shut before he could solidify a spot. Eventually, on lap 15, Martin found an opening between the two on the backstretch. Pulling up to the door on Oliver, the trio raced into turn three. Oliver came down the banking creating some contact that brought out a yellow. Oliver was charged with the caution, while Stewart and Martin restarted up front. For the final five laps, Martin raced out front and to his first Pure Stock checkered flag of the season. The Shelbi’s Sweets & Treats #5 were Chris Mick, Stewart, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Brian Minard. Others in the top ten included Bob Passwaters, Jr., Bill Burkholder, Oliver, Jonathon Moore, and Tim Lynn. Mick won the dash, while Burkholder took the heat. Martin also set fast time.

Neil Rolli held the lead for the first seven laps of the fast Compact feature, before point leader, Don Rufener, Jr. worked by. Rolli then faded through the field and eventually retired to the infield with problems, while Brad Henry challenged Rufener at the front. As the laps wore on in the caution free race, Rufener led the field as top qualifier Kyle Rector worked through the traffic. At the finish, Rufener claimed the victory, while Rector came a lap or two shy of coming from the back to the front. Following the two were Tad Grove, Henry, and Bryce Allensworth. The rest of the top ten were Jesse page, Rich Dunlap, Wes Ennis, Don Rufener, III, and John McNutt.

In the second Compact feature, Richard Duvall led the first four laps before three-time feature winner Earl Scranton took over. Not far behind was Max McCartney and he started turning up the wick immediately. His pressure caused Scranton to go under his qualifying time, sending him pitside. McCartney put his car in cruise control until the final lap when Richard Hambleton gave him the chrome horn in turn one. McCartney nearly spun, but was able to hang on for the victory. Following the Dean Mowls At Ferris/Fast Mass Racing #5 were Hambleton, Corey Evey, Tim Frederick, and Richard Duvall. Larry Ennis, Jr., Don Boron, Jr., Perk Pyle, Jr., Jeffrey Orr, and Ed McClain finished off the top ten.

Kyle Rector won the dash, while Brad Henry and Richard Hambleton won the heats.

An exciting night is planned this coming Saturday, July 24, as the Late Model Bounty Series makes its first ever trip to the 3/10-mile. A field in upwards of 20 is expected. Fourth place point contender Oliver Allen has run with the Midvale Speedway Late Models the last two weeks in preparation for the event. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8’s are also scheduled to race.

Pit gates open at 2:00. Midvale division hotlaps will take place between 3:00-3:30 and 4:00-4:30, while the Bounty Series will have the track between 3:30-4:00 and 4:30-5:00. Qualifying will be at 5:00 and racing will start at 6:30.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
