Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | July 10, 2010 |
While a few drivers did repeat as feature winners this season, a couple of new faces found victory lane this past Saturday, July 10 at Midvale Speedway. Racing was just one part of the night, as nearly 30 kids went home with brand new bicycles thanks to all of the great people that stepped forward to donate.
Page Racing, Federated Auto/McClintock Racing, Aubihl Racing, Huffman Racing, Rolli Racing, Schneider Home Improvement/Pit Stop Graphics Racing, Midvale Speedway, Smith's Auto Sales, Canton Auto Salvage, Finish Line Motors, and Jason Anthony all stepped up and donated bikes for the give-a-way. The kids really appreciated it.
In the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model 25-lap feature, Derek Grewell and Bob Schneider, Jr. raced to the green with Schneider assuming the top spot and Mike Miller going into second. After the first lap was completed, caution waved, setting up the first of many double file restarts. With Miller in the outside lane and Schneider on the bottom, Miller hooked up in turn number two and catapulted his #53 into the race lead. Miller pulled away over the next couple of laps but the rest of his race wouldn't be easy as numerous cautions slowed the pace. His biggest challenger was Doug McMillen. The New Philadelphia, OH driver moved into second after a lap four restart and had a few opportunities to line up in the outside lane against Miller. There was one instance where McMillen got a great run through turns one and two and looked like he might take over the lead, however, he slid up the banking in three and four allowing Miller back out front. Down the stretch, the Milestone Services/Mr. Trailer #53 and Miller raced to his first feature win in 2010. McMillen, Bubba Smith, Todd Ripley, and Bob Schneider, Jr. completed the top five. Others in the top ten were Tom Garbrandt, Ryan Tedesco, Dustin Hayes, Ron Jaberg, Jr., and Oliver Allen. Miller, Bryant Smith, and Allen won the heats, while Bubba Smith set fast time.
Jerry McNealy held the early lead in the 15-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock farewell tour feature. Randy Smart, the top qualifier, was making quick work of the competitors behind him and worked by McNealy on lap three. The rest of the race had fans watching the McNealy/Kevin McClintock battle for second. McClintock look high and McClintock looked low with McNealy using up the pavement trying to protect the runner-up position. As the laps wound down, McClintock's frustration was showing as the duo made contact over the final couple of circuits. At the checkered, Randy Smart added to his point lead with his dominating win, while McNealy, Bill Aubihl, McClintock, and Don Rufener, Jr. finished off the top five. Smart was credited the clean sweep as he also won the heat.
Todd Miller and Adam Stewart made up the first row in the Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature. After one failed start, Stewart raced into the top spot with Teddy Oliver taking second. Oliver went immediately to the outside lane to pull alongside the race leader. The duo, ran side-by-side for the first ten laps, holding all the competition behind them. Mike Martin, running in the third spot, was patient as he looked to the third lane, looked to thread the needle, and looked low. A couple of times, Martin had a nose beside the leaders but checked up to avoid contact. With about 9 laps to go, Martin got a good run to the inside of Stewart coming off of turn four. As he pulled alongside in the middle of the straightaway, Stewart turned left trying to defend his lead. The two made hard contact, sending Martin into the infield, causing damage, and ending his night. Stewart was sent pitside, while Oliver and Bob Passwaters, Sr. restarted up front. Oliver led until lap fifteen before Passwaters, Sr. shot by on the inside lane. Coming to the finish, the Johnny Lape's Orchard/Dropkix Pub #75 was followed by Oliver, Bill Burkholder, Todd Miller, and Brian Oliver. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tim Lynn, Jonathon Moore, Mike Martin, and Adam Stewart. Martin and Rob Scott won the heats. Passwaters, Sr. set fast time.
The Midvale Speedway Compact fast feature was the most exciting of the night. Don Rufener, Jr., the point leader, struggle a little in qualifying, setting him up for a good starting spot. Rufener took the lead from Tim Frederick on lap two and sailed out front. Behind him, Kyle Grove was on the move. Grove pulled alongside Rufener and was able to move around him on lap ten. He cleared him moments later, but instead of pulling away, his car seemed to slow pulling Rufener and Rich Dunlap into contention. Going into turn three on the final lap, Grove opened the bottom just enough for Dunlap to slip to the inside. The two made a little contact in three and four with Rufener running the third lane. As the trio crossed the line, no one was totally sure who claimed the win. After a couple of minutes of deliberation and watching tape, it was decided that Grove had claimed his first career fast feature victory in the J.D. Byrider/Greg's Recovery #3. In one of the closest finishes in Midvale Speedway history, Dunlap, Rufener, Don Rufener, III, and Brad Henry completed the top five. The rest of the top ten were John McNutt, Bryce Allensworth, Jesse Page, Wes Ennis, and Neil Rolli.
The second Compact feature saw Michelle Matusik lead the first lap before Earl Scranton took over on lap two. Scranton, who had won two other features already this season, was looking for his second in a row. Richard Hambleton ran in the second spot for much of the race and applied some pressure, but in the end it was Scranton claiming his third win of the year. Larry Ennis, Corey Evey, and Ashlee Page finished off the top five.
Rich Dunlap, Don Boron, Jr., and Jill Harshey were the heat winners, while John McNutt set fast time.
Neil Rolli held off a tough field of challengers in the Figure 8 feature. Rolli, who had won the first two, is still unbeaten in Figure 8 racing this season. The Murray's Bail Bonds #46 defeated Lennie Orr, Larry Ennis, and Don Rufener, Jr.
Midvale Speedway will hold its 2010 edition of the kids racecar rides this Saturday, July 17. At intermission, many of the racecars from the pits will come onto the track to give rides to all the youngsters in attendance. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race.
Pits open at 2:00, hotlaps are at 3:00, qualifying is at 5:00, and racing action will take place at 6:30.
