Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | June 26, 2010 |
FRIDAY NIGHT EVENT DETAILS CLICK HERE
On a blistering hot Saturday evening in June, a talented group of drivers converged at Midvale Speedway for the 2010 Mid-Season Championships. Though weather hasn't been on the race fan's side this season, the June 26 events were completed about two minutes before a downpour hit the speedway.
Seventeen McIntosh Oil Company Late Models lined up for the 25-lap feature. Derek Grewell and Emerson Huffman started on the front row, with Grewell going out front early. Leading over the first several laps despite a number of sideways moments, Grewell was looking for his first career Late Model feature win. On lap 8, his chances for victory diminished when Rich Marcum scooted by. Marcum, who had claimed the 2008 and 2009 Mid-Season Championship races, became the odds on favorite to do it again. However, two later cautions and the double file restarts forced Marcum to work hard for the victory. First, it was Mike Miller with a chance in the outside lane. After a few laps or trying hard, Miller slipped back to third. The final caution flew with 8 to go. That yellow slated Bubba Smith in the outside lane after racing from his tenth starting spot. Smith tried for a lap or two before dropping back to the inside lane. Marcum raced across the line with his third straight Mid-Season Championship crown. Following the Ameripro Heating & Cooling/Rentwear Uniforms #27 were Smith, Miller, Bryant Smith, and Tom Garbrandt who was strong early. The rest of the top ten were Joel McKnight, Ryan Tedesco, Bob Eichel, Derek Grewell, and Bob Schneider, Jr. Marcum and McKnight won the heats, while Bubba Smith was top qualifier.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock division had a small group of cars again for their 15-lap main event. Jerry McNealy raced into the early lead with Kevin McClintock in tow. McClintock looked high for a lap or two but couldn't get the run he needed to make the pass. Meanwhile, top qualifier Randy Smart hooked the bottom lane and shot by the duo to claim the dominating win. At the finish, Tad Grove, McClintock, McNealy, and Aubihl crossed behind the Dover Dental Group/McBride's Auto #17. Smart also won the heat and extended his point lead.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stocks had another solid field and put on another good show. Todd Miller, the point leader, started on the pole and took the quick lead. With a small 7 car invert for the race, the fastest qualifiers took little time to challenge for the win. On lap 3, Miller, Teddy Oliver, and Lee McCreery were all going for the top spot. In a front straightaway crash, Miller was eliminated and Oliver restarted from the tail. The restart set Bob Passwaters, Sr. and Mike Martin in the front row. Martin was quick, but not quick enough as Passwaters set the pace. Many eyes were fixed on the #49 of Oliver as he raced his way back into contention. Oliver eventually moved into second, but Passwaters continued to extend his lead for his first career Pure Stock feature win. The Johnny Lape's Orchard/Chassis Systems #75 of Waynesburg's Bob Passwaters, Sr. was followed by Oliver, Martin, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Brian Minard. Brian Oliver, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Tim Lynn, Bill Burkholder, and Dave Cimperman completed the top ten. Todd Miller and Brian Minard won the heats, while Lee McCreery set fast time.
Billy Nicholas and Neil Rolli started up front in the 15-lap fast feature for the Compacts. It was Rolli going out front as Nicholas fell into the grasps of the hungry challengers behind him. With three and even four wide racing, the event turned out to be the wildest and roughest of the night. Rolli, while in the lead, had a car on the outside working through three and four. As he slid up the track trying to protect the position, Joe Konovsek looked low to make it three wide. Rolli shot back down the banking and he and Konovsek brought out the caution. Konovsek cut a tire, while Rolli restarted from the tail. The incident put Jesse Page in the driver seat to pick up his first feature win of the season. A couple more cautions, including one for a grinding crash between Billy Nicholas and Wes Ennis, slowed the pace, but Page crossed under the checkered first. The Lawncare & More/Empire Welding #02 beat Rich Dunlap, Brad Henry, Don Rufener, Jr., and Kyle Rector to the stripe. Others in the top ten were Bryce Allensworth, Kyle Grove, Jake Albright, Don Rufener, III, and John McNutt.
In the second Compact feature, a number of drivers had a chance for victory, but in the end it was rookie Corey Evey claiming his first career trophy. The Canton, Ohio driver had four or five drivers bumper to bumper behind him looking for an opening. Over the final couple of circuits, Evey kept his ride in the bottom lane and never opened the door for Phil Veno who charged from the tail of the field. The Finish Line Motors/Canton Auto Sales & Salvage #21 was chased by Veno, Jeffrey Orr, Tim Frederick, and Kelly Wissman. Others logging top tens were Don Boron, Jr., Ashlee Page, Larry Ennis, Colton Cottis, and Michelle Matusik.
Compact preliminary events were taken by Wes Ennis, Tom Barrett, and Kelly Wissman. Kyle Rector set fast time.
Only three cars lined up for the Figure 8 feature, but the race still entertained. Early leader Derek Grewell had Don Rufener, Jr. get to the inside. While trying to close the door, the two made contact and slid into the infield. While they were trying to get refired, Rolli was still running around the track building a big lead. After lapping them both, it looked like the win would be simple, but he had to avoid a couple of extremely close calls at the intersection. He succeeded and went to 2-0 on the season in Figure 8 racing. The Murray's Bail Bonds/KC Mustang Korral #46 was followed by Rufener and Grewell.
A Friday night, July 2 special is next on the schedule. It will feature the Main Event Racing Series Downtown Ford 100. The Super Late Models will be making their final visit of 2010. Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will also be there running in heats and features. The raindate for the event is Saturday.
Pit gates open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 4:00, qualifying at 6:00, and racing at 8:00. The week's extra practice will be held Thursday from 4:00-8:00 with $10 pit admission.
Grandstand admission for Friday's race is $18 for adults and seniors and $10 for kids 6-15. Children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $35 for non-members.
