Huffman Surprises Many With First LM Win
June 19, 2010

Huffman Surprises Many With First LM Win
For the first time in the 2010 season, Midvale Speedway has completed two nights of racing in-a-row. Weather has not been kind to the 3/10-mile oval, but things may finally be looking a little brighter. The June 19 racing program was one of the best so far this season, with a little bit of everything in store.

Top qualifier Bubba Smith rolled a 13 in the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model division, putting Emerson Huffman and Dustin Hayes on the front row. Fans were a little leery of the start, as both drivers have very little Midvale Speedway experience. Huffman, in just his second season of racing, and Hayes, who has run just a handful of events at the oval, ended up having a real clean start, with Huffman taking the lead. The sophomore campaigner put together a sizable advantage on the rest of the field, as the first 12 laps went caution free. When the yellow waved at the halfway mark, the field was again bunched up with a double file restart. Huffman, again, didn't falter and stretched his advantage again. Just a couple of minor mishaps brought out the yellow over the second half of the race and Huffman was never seriously challenged. Joel McKnight was able to get by Hayes for the second spot, while Bryant Smith raced into third. Racing under Terry Colletti's checkered flag were Dellroy, Ohio's Emerson Huffman in his Red's Welding/Heather's Day Care #90 followed by McKnight, Smith, Hayes, and Rich Marcum. McKnight mistakenly went to his trailer instead of the tech line after the race, causing a disqualification. That moved Doug McMillen to fifth, while Bubba Smith, Mike Miller, Bob Schneider, Jr., Derek Grewell, and Ron Jaberg, Jr. finished in the top ten. Bryant Smith and Jonathan Reitter won the heats.

The 15-lap Tusco Net Sport Stock feature had Will Walker and Jerry McNealy starting up front. The story of the race, though, was top qualifier Randy Smart dicing his way from the back of the field to the front in just 6 laps. After winning in a back-up car a week ago, Smart had his powerplant back in his #17 ride and rocketed his way around the competition. The Dover, Ohio driver crossed the line first in his Dover Dental Group/Kurt Garren, MD #17 and was followed by Tad Grove, Bill Aubihl, Kevin McClintock, and Jerry McNealy. Ron Dague won the heat, and would've had a top five in the feature but he forgot to stop on the backstretch after the race for the mandatory tire check.

After a rough Pure Stock feature one week ago, this week's race was relatively clean and real exciting. Todd Miller and Brian Oliver started up front for the 20-lap grind, but they were just two of many that had a real shot at victory. A number of lead changes took place as the cream was rising to the top. Keith Anderson had a good run going at the front of the field, but the top two qualifiers, Lee McCreery and Mike Martin were closing quickly. After a restart, McCreery raced out front and pulled away with his first feature win of 2010. The M&D Design/Canton Auto Sales #2 was followed across the stripe by Anderson, Martin, Phil Bunton, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. Rob Scott, Todd Miller, Brian Oliver, Chris Smith, and Luther Chambers finished in the top ten. Anderson and Scott won the heats.

Wes Ennis claimed his first career Midvale win in the fast heat early Saturday evening. A little over an hour later, the New Philadelphia, Ohio youngster backed that up with his second career Midvale win, but his first feature victory against a field of 13 other Compact participants. Leading flag-to-flag, the Haas Body Shop/A. Diano Concrete was able to fend of challenges from Adam Mishler, Don Rufener, III, Brad Henry, and John McNutt. Others in the top ten were Don Rufener, Jr., Kyle Grove, Jesse Page, Earl Scranton, and Ray Hoover.

The second Compact feature had Jake Albright dicing through traffic, with Billy Nicholas in tow, to take the lead. There was a brief heart stopping moment for the leader as he received some contact from Billy Nicholas on the last lap, sending him spinning. Albright received his spot back for the restart and the "Turtle" held on down the stretch to claim his second career feature victory, both coming this season. The A.T. II/AMF Racing #10 was followed by Hess, Larry Ennis, Ashlee Page, and Don Boron, Jr. Claiming top tens were Billy Nicholas, Colton Cottis, Perk Pyle, Jr., Lennie Orr, and Neil Rolli.

Compact preliminary races were claimed by Wes Ennis, Jake Albright, and Larry Ennis. Rich Dunlap was top qualifier.

In the evening's powder puff races, Candie Bunton claimed a convincing win in the Pure Stock event, while Amanda Sears took the checkered in the Compact event. Both drivers were impressive despite their low level experience.

Believe it or not, the 2010 Mid-Season Championships are set to be held this coming Saturday, June 26. Drivers will be racing for the larger trophies and double points, and if that isn't enough, a full moon will be displayed above the track.

Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, Compacts, and Figure 8's will all be there.

Pit gates will open at 2:00, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 4:45, and racing at 6:30.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
