Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2026 Race Season |
 | May 29, 2010 |
">A beautiful summer-like Saturday afternoon turned evening made for an entertaining night of racing at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday night, May 29. The Main Event Racing Series was joined by Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts for a full evening in racing entertainment.
Main Event qualifying had Doylestown, Ohio driver Gary Whipkey setting fast time with a 13.852. Following the five-time series champion in the time trial session was Jimmy Carter (13.853), Don Harvey, Jr. (13.865), Mike Miller (13.897), and Todd Ripley (13.914). After qualifying, Whipkey pulled the "8" pill, putting Doug Sommers and Scott Baker up front for the Carter Lumber 75.
With the green dropping, Baker shot into the lead over Sommers. With many thinking that Baker would be unbeatable after being strong in hotlaps, a lap two restart proved otherwise. The Akron, Ohio veteran didn't get up to speed and pulled pitside, ending his night with just two laps complete.
Midvale regular, Todd Ripley, lined up in second behind Sommers for the next green flag. Ripley, quicker than Sommers, rolled the middle of the turns much better than the leader, creating contact a few times between the two. The first couple of times, Sommers was able to steer out of possible spins. However, with 12 laps complete, contact entering turn three, sent Sommers spinning and that put Ripley to the tail.
At this point, all eyes were on top qualifier, Gary Whipkey. The winner of both Midvale Main Event races in 2009, had already picked off a few of his competitors and was on his way to the front. After following Sommers and Don Harvey, Jr. for a few laps, Whipkey was able to get a run on the inside of the second place car to pull to Sommers' rear bumper. Whipkey then went to the outside lane a couple of laps later to challenge the leader. The move didn't turn out to be real easy, as the two rubbed paint in three and four, nearly causing a spin.
From then on, most eyes were focused on Jimmy Carter, as he started his trek forward. Closing in on the halfway mark, Carter went around the outside of Mike Miller and Sommers to claim third. On a lap 41 restart, everyone was wanting to see what Carter had for the top two. However, the Strongsville, Ohio pilot noticed a flat tire and had to pit for the change.
He did restart from the tail and make a run through the field, however, with a large amount of side-by-side action in front of him, he was held up a few times trying to get to the front.
A long green flag run ended the race with Whipkey claiming the win by 1.615 seconds. Following the Carter Lumber/Lenny's Collision #59 across the stripe were Don Harvey, Jr., Mike Miller, Jimmy Carter, and Donnie Hill. Charlie Schultz, Drew Charlson, Jamie Hunt, Doug Sommers, and Shawn Stroble were top ten finishers.
The series will next be in action this coming Friday, June 4 at Kil-Kare Speedway in Xenia, OH.
The Tusco Net Sport Stock 15-lap feature saw a number of drivers in the lead. Kevin McClintock, who has had a lot of engine misfortune early this season, was out front before Randy Smart was able to scoot by on the inside lane. Smart, looking to have the win under control, was setting a solid pace before his transmission went out on the frontstretch. That gave the lead to Ron Dague. The New Philadelphia, Ohio driver had numerous problems creep up with the transmission earlier, but was able to race to victory lane with his second feature win of the year. McClintock, Jerry McNealy, Brad Kirkpatrick, and Smart were the top five finishers behind the Tolloti Pipe/Todd Miller Excavating #75. Smart won the heat and set fast time.
The Midvale Speedway Pure Stock feature had all kinds of action throughout the field. A few cautions slowed the pace for mishaps, the worst of which saw Vince Martin's #5 car with a wadded up rear end and Teddy Oliver's front end with damage including a busted radiator. Missing all of the problems was top qualifier Joe Oliver. The Canton, Ohio driving veteran took the lead late in the race and cruised to victory. Following the Smith's Auto Sales/Stewart Flooring #88 were Bob Passwaters, Sr. with his best Pure Stock feature finish, Brian Minard, Lee McCreery, and Bob Passwaters, Jr. Rob Scott, Luther Chambers, Bill Page, Bill Burkholder, and Teddy Oliver finished off the top ten. T. Oliver and McCreery won the heats.
The fast feature for the Compacts may have turned out as the most memorable race of the night. During the race's midstage, Kyle Grove got a little sideways coming out of turn four. With the trailing cars checking up, some bumping took place with Cliff Cox and Tammy Rufener getting locked up. As the duo, neither finding the other likeable in the past, came to a stop on the frontstretch, tempers flared quickly. The two competitors put on a demolition derby exhibition in front of the sizable crowd that seemed to go on for a couple of minutes. Both were able to drive pitside under their own power and were handed one week suspensions by track officials. Back to the race, Jesse Page, the fast qualifier had moved all the way from the back into the top spot. He got there, mainly by running the third lane on the outside of a Compact traffic jam. Page, though, had a head gasket go and ended his chance for an exciting victory. Eventually, it was Rich Dunlap, filling in for Kelly McNutt, claiming the victory. Following Dunlap were Wes Ennis, Kyle Grove, Earl Scranton, and Rich Hess. Others in the top ten were Page, Don Rufener, III, Kyle Rector, Don Rufener, Jr., and Brad Henry.
The second Compact feature was a good one with Jake Albright, Bryce Allensworth, and Phil Veno putting on a great show. Eventually, it was "The Turtle" Jake Albright claiming his first career feature win, after being so close on numerous occasions. Allensworth, Veno, Tim Frederick, and Ray Hoover were the top five finishers. Picking up top ten's were Tye Kelly, Larry Ennis, Richard Duvall, Colton Cottis, and Corey Evey.
The Compacts actually started the evening with a makeup feature from two weeks ago. Tim Frederick claimed the main event trophy, while Larry Ennis, Don Boron, Jr., Perk Pyle, Jr., and Jill Harshey had top fives.
Rich Dunlap, Rich Hess, Bryce Allensworth, and Larry Ennis picked up heat wins.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, June 5 with kids' bicycle races at intermission. All kids 15 and under are reminded to bring their bikes and preferably a helmet. Late Models, Sport Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Compacts will all race. At the end of the night, the ladies will be permitted to compete in a Pure Stock powder puff as well as one for the Compacts.
